|Newington Happenings and our 2016 USA Reunions

Welcome to the May edition of the ONU eNews – US Edition

2016 is already shaping up as a big year for Newington. We won 6 GPS premierships during the summer season and the GPS Football (Soccer) season is into Round 4 and Round 1 of the GPS Rugby season kicks off this Saturday v King’s at Stanmore. We are defending Premiers for Football 2nds and Joint Premiers for Rugby 1sts.

Next month, 125 Old Boys, staff and students are travelling to Tupou College, our brother school in Tonga, to help celebrate their Sesquicentenary. On 18 July, His Majesty the King of Tonga King Tupou VI, the third son of His Late Majesty King Tupou IV (ON 1936), will visit Newington to officially open the Tupou College (Year 7) Centre and our new Drama Centre.

On the same day we will also be opening the Newington Challenge Centre, the Sandy Pearson (ON 1936) Cadet Centre and Roger Davidson (ON 1940) will open the Medical Centre named in his honour.

We have six Year reunions at Stanmore in May commencing with the Classes of 1971 and 1976 this Saturday.

Newington’s 2016 USA Reunions

Our 2016 USA Reunions will be held in San Francisco on Sunday 25 September and in New York on Saturday 1 October. Prior to that, we will be visiting Hong Kong on Tuesday 20 September, to be hosted by Ron Lu (ON 1962) and his wife Stella. This will be the third annual Hong Kong Reunion for Old Boys and current and future parents and we hope to exceed the 45 that attended in 2015.

Our San Francisco Reunion is confirmed for Sunday 25 September commencing at 12.30pm. A number of Old Boys have already indicated they will be attending, so it will be a great lunch. We will be joined by Alumni from both Brisbane Boys Grammar and Brisbane Girls Grammar together with AIS USA Foundation Chairman Doug Elix AO and his wife Robyn. The venue is yet to be set but you can Book Here and there is no charge to attend. We would love to see you there and we can bring you up to date on how your old school is going. It will be a great day.

The New York Reunion on Saturday 1 October will be a cracker and you should not miss this one. We are honoured to be hosted in their Manhattan home by Dr Peter (ON 1964) and Marise Green. They live at 214 West 17 Street in Chelsea, just near the Highline and it is a converted car garage that they purchased way back in 1981 (it would have been a very different place then).

Peter has very kindly provided some pictures of their home, including what it looked like from the street in the 1940’s and we are all very much looking forward to enjoying their hospitality. Again, there is no cost to attend but we ask you to Book Here for catering purposes. Hope you can come.

Finally, a reminder that these reunions are part of our biennial visit to the US to promote the philanthropy of the AIS USA Foundation. The Foundation was established by Newington in 2006 and this year we are celebrating ten years of successful giving to some 25 member schools. Four members of the Board are Newington Old Boys and Newington continues to be the biggest beneficiary due to the generosity of our North American Alumni.
