Newington Corporate Rowing Regatta 2016

For six weeks in Term 2, 7 crews made up from past and current parents and friends trained at the Newington Boatshed for the Annual Great Autumn Regatta (GAR) which was held on Sunday 29th May 2016.

The day started fresh with the temperature gauge reading 2 degrees at SIRC but eventually warmed up to a clear blue autumn day. The regatta competition, however was hot, hot, hot.

56 rowers, 7 coxswains, 8 boat holders and 5 Newington Masters all helped to unload and rig 4 Newington Boats and assist with the Regatta. The day was organised by the GAR committee with members of all schools involved, including 2 members for Newington, John Treloar (ON 1970) and Pip Bulbeck.

The first heats started and all the crews raced well, getting familiar with the course and the experience of what the students race in under ‘Head of the River’ conditions.

Fun and Teamwork was the theme for the event with many of the crews dressing to reflect their crew names and some of the crews dressing just to stand out in the crowd. After the heats, semi-finals and then finals, one Newington crew took 3rd place on the podium. Overall the Kings School, with their all male crew won the A Final and retained the GAR Trophy for another year.

If you are interested in joining Corporate Rowing 2017 to experience what your son or daughter does please contact Julie Gigg – djgigg@gmail.com and we can send you the details for 2017.

Congratulations to all the crews for being a huge part of the day.
