Newington’s Endowment Fund

The Endowment Fund has the goal to raise sufficient funds to provide up to 100 Bursaries at any one time, so that Boys of Promise whose families cannot afford a Newington education have the opportunity to become Newington Men of Substance. Newington’s diversity has always been its strength and the Endowment Fund will ensure that in perpetuity, our socio-economic diversity will be maintained – for the benefit of all the boys at Newington.

We currently have a small number of Bursaries operating that some of you have or are generously supporting. The Chris Wild Indigenous Bursary and the Phillip Davis OAM Mathematics Bursary are two that warrant continued Old Boy support. The Old Boy Trustees of the Chris Wild Indigenous Bursary have set a goal to fundraise $5 million so that every year, an Indigenous boy can be provided the opportunity of a Newington education.

With Phil Davis’ passing earlier this year, the opportunity is there for every Old Boy to chip in and fulfil his vision for a Mathematics Bursary in his memory. As the Patron of the Founders Society, Phil has substantially contributed through his Will but we need the support of every Old Boy from the last 66 years, to make Phil’s vision a reality.

As an Old Boy, we hope that you have had the chance to reflect on the value of your Newington education. We hope that now you may think it would be a good thing to provide, in a small way, the opportunity for another boy, not in as secure financial circumstances, to also benefit from a Newington education.

We ask you to please consider a donation to Newington College via the AIS USA Foundation. The AIS USA Foundation was created specifically to give US based alumni, friends and funding organizations a way to support educational institutions in Australia. In 2015 donations allowed the AIS USA Foundation to award almost AU$1million in grants to its member schools. In 2016 Newington College was the beneficiary  of  in excess of AU$224,000.00, that had been donated through the AIS USA Foundation.

Newington’s Bursary program and the Endowment Fund is ambitious but essential, if we are to keep Newington available for all boys, of all backgrounds. Will you help us meet this goal? To find out more, click on this link to visit our Foundation Website.

They say that one can only see so far because we stand on the shoulders of giants that have come before. Will you join us in being the giants for the next Newington generation?

Tax Deductible Donations.

The Australian Independent Schools (AIS) USA Foundation was incorporated in the United States in 2006 and has been granted tax-exempt 501 (c)(3) status by the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Gifts to the Foundation are tax deductible for US taxpayers and may be of benefit to Canadians with US tax liability.

Newington Medal

The Newington Medal recognises outstanding contributions, actions and achievements of Old Boys who have made a significant difference to the welfare and future of the College and to the quality of life of Australians or to humanity in countries around the world. We encourage all to nominate a fellow Newingtonian based outside of Australia to be considered for the International Medal.  Newington College has a large contingent of successful Old Boys in the USA who are of merit to be nominated for this award.

Basketball – USA

Connor Miller (ON 2015) and Lewis Holey (ON 2012) are now playing basketball with Vermont Technical College in Randolph Vermont, Connor as a Guard and Lewis as Forward. Both are studying Business in this well regarded College.

The Team plays in the YSCC (Yankee Small College Conference), a Division II conference in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association. The conference consists of two-year and four-year course colleges from Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and one member in New York State.

With a number of new players joining the Vermont Tech Knights for the 2016-7 season, the results were mixed for the first half of the season. With the team adjusting to the style, rigour and leadership that the Newington duo brought, the season was revived with much success culminating with a place in the finals.

At the finals played in Maine, Lewis was named as USCAA Men’s Basketball Division II Honourable Mention. He also earned 1st team All-Conference honours at the Yankee Small College Conference banquet during the end of season conference tournament.  This award is voted on by all coaches within the league after each team has nominated players. According to coach Tyrrell, “Lew has had an unbelievable freshman season. He has garnered great respect from all opponents through the year due to his work ethic and skill on the court.  I am so proud of him and the other players”. Coach Tyrrell went on further to say “Lewis is a great addition to our team this year. He made an impact from day one with his tough play and he just never gives up in a game.  I am really proud of him, and it shows throughout the league that other teams notice his stellar play.”

College Football Sydney Cup – Stanford vs Rice

College Football will return to Sydney after the success of the 2016 College Football Sydney Cup. 2017 will see College Football powerhouse, Stanford University (Stanford Cardinal), take on Rice University (Rice Owls) in what will be a hotly contested affair at Allianz Stadium on Sunday 27 August 2017.

The Stanford Cardinal football program, representing Stanford University in the Pac 12 Conference, has a decorated history with 15 Conference and two NCAA titles in their record books. Stanford University has produced some of not only the greatest NFL athletes of all time, such as John Elway, but currently have 35 players in the NFL who are products of the Stanford Cardinal system, including Seattle Seahawks livewire and Super Bowl Champion, Richard Sherman and Indianapolis Colts Quarterback, Andrew Luck.

The Rice University Owls, based out of Houston, Texas, also compete in Division One of the NCAA tournament but in the West Division. In addition to producing a number of current and former NFL players, Rice University is well known as the school where John Heisman was Head Coach for 35 years, after whom the trophy for College Football’s most outstanding player is named.

“Tell us how we measure up?” Researching whole College performance in 2017

Over the next few months, Newington is undertaking a whole College Research Project. With the assistance of the Macquarie Marketing Group ✦ Education (MMG✦Education) custom surveys will be emailed via the College’s contact lists to Old Boys, current parents, current staff and all boys of the College from Years 5-12. These lists provide just over 11,000 potential respondents.

This is the first time a study of this size has been undertaken to investigate the levels of satisfaction and performance of the College. Importantly, we are doing this from the perspective of all of its stakeholders and at the one time. This 2017 snapshot is also seeking to establish levels of interest from the whole College Community for possible future directions—up to five years hence. The College Council and Senior Staff are very keen that the needs, expectations and opinions of as many members of the Newington Community inform the operational and strategic decisions they take now, and in the near future.

The survey for Old Boys is the first of the four to be sent and is a strictly confidential, online instrument. It will be sent directly from MMG✦Education to all email addresses currently in our database, and returned only to them. Newington will not see individual surveys and the results will only be provided to us as aggregated data.

MMG✦Education works with many independent schools in Australia in researching their performance. This means that they will be able to provide benchmarks for Newington’s performance against the experience and perceptions of many similar schools.

The survey for Old Boys will be sent in the week of 12 June 2017. If you do not wish to receive the invitation to complete the survey please email “NO SURVEY” to ONU Alumni Officer Ms Jennifer Chapman If you have any queries about the survey, please email or telephone Director of Community and Development Mr Rod Bosman (ON 1978), who will be happy to help you, T: +61 2 9568 9540.

We would like to sincerely thank you in advance should you choose to participate. Your input will be most valuable to the College and is greatly appreciated.

Remembering – David Rumsey (ON 1955)

David Rumsey, Organ Pioneer, dies aged 77

Article: Sydney Morning Herald – Peter McCallum – 14 February 2017

David Rumsey, regular organist with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra for 25 years and founding Head of the School of Organ and Church Music at the Sydney Conservatorium, has died in Basel. He was 77.

Rumsey’s wiry, alert figure could frequently be seen high above the concert platform in the Town Hall and Opera House organ lofts, the tricky co-ordination with conductor initially managed by mirror and then by closed circuit TV.

This reached its apogee in 1994, when he played Saint-Saens’ Symphony No. 3 in C minor (the so-called Organ Symphony popularised by the film Babe) from the Hill organ in the Town Hall while orchestra and an audience of more than 100,000 followed his every finger and ankle movement in the Domain via microwave link.

Rumsey studied in Sydney with Donald Hollier and in Europe with Jorgen-Ernst Hansen (Copenhagen), Marie-Claire Alain (Paris) and Anton Heiller (Vienna), returning to Australia in 1967 and Sydney in 1969.

A frequent recitalist and broadcaster, he was among the founders and early champions of Sydney’s first classical music community radio station, 2 MBS-FM (now Fine Music FM).

In 2000 he moved to Switzerland, not least to be able to work on and research the historic medieval and baroque instruments that had been his lifelong study.

He leaves a legacy of fine instruments (on whose restoration he was consulted), influential students, and memorable recordings and performances.
