A Message from the Chairman, Newington College Council

It gives me great pleasure to introduce Mr Michael Parker as the 19th Headmaster of Newington College.  Michael starts with us on 1 January 2019, following Dr David Mulford’s retirement at the end of this year.

We warmly welcome Michael (pictured below), along with his wife Fiona and daughters Julia and Elena, to the Newington community.  Fiona is a Senior Lecturer in English at UNSW.

Michael was the unanimous choice of the Newington College Council.  His appointment is the culmination of an extensive search, using the services of a specialist executive search firm, that yielded a very strong field of candidates from Australia and overseas.

Michael is already steeped in our unique culture and core values of diversity and inclusiveness, having served as the Head of English at Newington from 2002 to 2007.  He has a healthy level of “black and white blood” coursing through his veins.

Council was impressed with Michael’s restless energy, commitment to the holistic development and wellbeing of every boy, and reputation for integrity, vision and innovation.  He is an enthusiastic proponent of the pursuit of a faith-based, liberal education.

Michael holds a combined Arts/Law degree and a Masters of Education from the University of Sydney.  Whilst at university, he worked in one of Australia’s leading law firms before pursuing his passion for education.  He taught English and served as a Housemaster at Cranbrook before travelling overseas to take up an exchange position at Eton College.  In 2002 he joined Newington, where he was a highly successful Head of English.  After five years in that role, he was appointed Deputy Headmaster at Cranbrook, where he served for seven years before progressing to become Headmaster at Oxley College, Bowral, in 2014.  Under his leadership, Oxley’s academic performance and survey results across students, teachers and staff have risen markedly.

Michael is the author of several publications including Talk With Your Kids:  Conversations about Big Ideas and Talk With Your Kids:  Conversations about Ethics.  He is widely travelled, particularly in Nepal, with four major treks under his belt, including past Camp One at 20,000 feet on Mt Everest.

Michael is committed to open engagement with students and the school community at large.  He is a strong believer in creating a teaching environment that engenders critical thinking among the boys. His aim is to foster a culture that combines improved academic performance with enduring pastoral care programs to ensure our boys are prepared for an unpredictable and constantly changing workplace.

He is very much looking forward to building on David’s legacy to lead Newington to even greater heights and for our boys to continue to Discover What’s Possible. I know you will make Michael and his family welcome.

2018 Chris Wild (ON 1991) Indigenous Bursary – Donor Matching Program

We are excited to announce that your donations to the Chris Wild Indigenous Bursary via the AISUSA Foundation will be matched $2 for every $1 donated between now and 30 June 2018. If a donation to our Indigenous Bursary program is something you have been thinking about, then now is the time to make that happen.

Our 2018 goal is to raise $1.2 million by 30 June. Why $1.2 million?
With the ongoing support of a number of generous Old Boys, Parents and the College, we are able to offer 2 for 1 matching for up to $400,000 of fundraising. If we raise $400,000, matching funding of $800,000 will be gifted, giving us $1.2 million.

Supporting the Newington Indigenous program will benefit
the whole community with our young men ready
to inspire future generations by their
knowledge and leadership.

$1.2 million also sees us all but halfway to our goal of $5 million and with the goodwill and support of current and new Ambassadors, this will mean we can award a Wild Bursary every year from 2020. Imagine the difference your donation can make to the future of our country.

Every donation small or large makes a difference. We look forward to your support.

Newington & Tupou College

Cyclone Gita Update

Newington College has a close relationship with Tupou College that extends back to their foundations in 1866.  Over the years the College has supported our brothers in Tonga in many ways from sending 20 foot shipping containers full of resources that Tupou College would otherwise not have, Staff and Student exchanges, and pastoral care when needed.

Earlier this year Cyclone Gita decimated Tupou’s working farm, caused structural damages to their classrooms and accommodation.  Through the generosity of the Newington Community we have raised over $18,000.00 to purchase resources for Tupou.  A shipping container is now on it’s way filled with much needed hardware, clothes, educational materials to help rebuild and support Tupou College and its community.

Thank you to all those who have contributed to the relief effort.

Fangufangumana (Mana) Latu (ON 2000)

Mana Latu (ON 2000) died unexpectedly in a car accident in Tonga.  Mana was a proud Newingtonian, after leaving Newington he went on to study at the The University of The South Pacific.  He qualified as a science teacher and taught at many schools in Tonga.  At the time of his death he was a university lecturer.  Mana was a most enthusiastic host of all Newington visitors to Tonga and was very close to those at Tupou College.  The College established a fund to raise much needed money for his young family.  Once again the Newington community rallied to support this young family, and in particular Mana’s classmates came together to raise in excess of $15,000.00.  The College thanks all those who contributed.

If you would like to support the above funds, please click here.
