Overseas Reunions

Old Boys came together to celebrate their Newington education in Hong Kong, San Francisco and New York.

Old Newingtonians, Current Parents and Past Parents gathered on 25 September, at the home of Past Parents Tony and Linda Rogers.  We thank Tony and Linda for opening their residence to the Newington Community.

On 30 September The Water Bar in San Francisco was the venue where Old Boys joined together with Dr David Mulford, to celebrate and share their happenings.

New York was the last of the Newington overseas reunions for 2018.  All Old Boys, Dr Mulford and Alex Baykitch AM (ON 1982) were hosted by Dr Peter Green (ON 1964) and Marise Santo at their Manhattan home.  Thank you Peter and Marise for again opening your home to our New York contingent.

A special thank you to Rod Bosman (ON 1978) for leading the overseas reunions and Renee Payne – Development Officer for her work bringing the reunions together.

Dedicated Past Parents, Barry Ross, Mark Bland (ON 1984) and Rod Bosman (ON 1978) have collectively contributed to create 150 Year of Newington Rugby History which will be launched at the Rugby Lunch in 2019.

If you wish to pre-purchase a copy of the book, click here for pre-sale orders.

There are over 400 pages, 200 photos and many fascinating rugby stories from the past 150 Years. Something to celebrate and keep a copy of your own for years to come

Time to Roll…

In 2017 ONU E News brought you an article from John Treloar (ON 1970) regarding his efforts at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.  We are pleased to share with you the 2018 update.

Last year you may have read of my Royal Agricultural Society (RAS) jam roll disaster!  Robbed by a judge who was confused by the wording of a rule and out the back went my ‘winning’ jam roll!  The RAS Cooking Competition is tough, combative and guided by rules.  Rules covering size, numbers of eggs, shape and whether the cake was sugar dusted or not.

This year, after gentle prodding of the RAS Arts and Crafts team, the rules for the Jam Roll were tightened.  There is now no confusion across the perishable cakes category.  By helping them with their rules issues, I was rewarded with the offer of entering as many categories as I choose, without any entry fee.  The temptation was to go big, enter as many as possible.  It took seconds to realise that wasn’t so smart as all the perishable cakes needed to be delivered to the Easter Show on Day 1 between 9-12, with judging starting at 1 pm.

I stuck with my Rich Fruit Cake in the Non-Perishable category and added a Sultana Cake.  In the Perishable Category, I entered the Jam Roll (of course), Sponge Sandwich and Iced Banana Cake.  I read and re-read the rules and wrote them down.  I studied them, memorised them and stuck to them.  There was no way I could be caught out again by the judge not understanding the rules.  I thought like a judge, watched CWA judging videos and practised all categories.  The family was right in saying I over-practised.  I can’t say how many kilos of flour, dozens of organic free range 3-day old eggs, kilos of dried fruit and jars of Raspberry Jam I used in multiple versions of the entered cakes.  Mates at rowing helped devour the test cakes, the family was inundated with some experimental samples and pretty well everywhere I went I took a cake.  Meetings, visits to family, everyone had a sample.  I put on weight.  I have an index finger problem when over tasting the cake batter.  Mixer blades out and there is the finger right around the bowl – just to make sure the taste is perfect.  It always was.  Now I put the bowl straight into the sink, turn on the water and drop in the beaters.  The things you do to control your sweet tooth!

The Fruit and Sultana cake were entered before the show opened.  I was happy with these.  Good looking cakes that, from the taste testers, gave good reviews and of course, some comments that were taken, considered and (sometimes!) implemented.

On the day of the opening of the show, I woke early, very early and started on the jam roll, sponge sandwich and iced banana cake. By 11 am I was finished and off to deliver the cakes and be ready for the judging at 1 pm.  The family joined me, along with friends from rowing.  We had good seats and were ready to go.  Sponge Sandwich was up first.  You can see your cake on the judging stand and watch them poke and prod, twist and squeeze the cakes.  Many get instantly rejected due to size, colour, air holes and other minor and major infringements.  No place in this category but a highly commended ribbon for my great looking cake.

It was Jam Roll time. Would I be rejected like last year?  Would the judge know my number and reject the troublemaker after the 2017 Jam Roll Controversy? No.  Tight judging, a smart comment by one of the judges re the controversy of 2017 re sugar dusting and like the Sponge Sandwich, the awarding of a highly commended ribbon that partially took away the pain of the rejection in 2017.

The banana cake you ask?  IT was still on the table when the winners were announced.  I thought the banana cake was my best entry. I will write that in 2019!

I was pleased to see the Rich Fruit Cake and the Sultana Cake in the finalists’ cabinet, joined by the awarded Sponge Sandwich and Jam Roll.  Four out of five in the display cabinet was not too bad!  I felt better and ready for 2019!  Not too much practise next year, stick with current recipes, select the best categories and add one or two, possibly the Peach Blossom Cake as there were not many entries in that category in 2018!

Orange Reunion

A very enjoyable country reunion was again held in Orange NSW on Saturday 6 October 2018. This was the second occasion that such an event was held, the first being last year and this was even bigger and better!

ON’s from Orange and the surrounding district and Sydney plus many partners attended, making a total of thirty one. The function was again held at the historic Duntryleague Guest House in Orange where a lovely meal was enjoyed in pleasant and private surroundings overlooking section of the golf course.

We were honoured by having with us Nick Farr-Jones AM (ON 1979), Dr Martin Roebuck and John Williams (ON 1958), who had all played for Australia as Wallaby members.  Nick Farr-Jones was our keynote speaker and was supported by Dr Roebuck. Dr Roebuck did not attend Newington, but he was invited to surprise Nick, as they had been team-mates. Nick spoke of some of his earlier experiences at the college and both spoke of their time as a rugby player and of overseas tours. Their reminiscences were both very interesting and informative.

Again, our efforts were led by George James (ON 1957), assisted by his wife Bianca. We would like to make this an annual event and to even expand our informal and unofficial committee! Any volunteers? We would also like to increase our numbers attending and hopefully a favourable word will spread. Our aim next year is to have 50 in attendance! We will also explore other venues and other formats. Again, we would be happy to hear of ideas and recommendations. Contact email addresses are below.

Achieving Alumni

All Newington Old Boys take a bow!  The establishment of the ONU Mental Health Fund has not only been to the benefit of many Old Boys and their families but is now being emulated by Shore.  Alexander Pagonis (ON 2010) writes “It is an amazing initiative that the ONU came up with a few years back, and it is incredible to know that the work we do not only has the ability to improve the lives of members within our Newington community but is now encouraging others within our broader GPS network to do the same for their individual communities.”

Patric Kuo (ON 2010) is currently performing in Jean Paul Gaultier’s Fashion Freak Show, playing Jean Paul himself. We wish Patric all the best for his performances in Paris.  Click here to read more and you can watch a preview here.

GPS Gold Challenge – The Newington Class of 1985 and 1986 won the Athletics and the Class of 1985 Rowing team won. A big thank you to all those that participated and we look forward to see what the Class of 1987 and the Class of 1988 can do.

Congratulations Massimo Marchese (ON 2017), Massimo has just graduated from the New York Film Academy (LA Campus) and is hoping to get a place into Syracuse University to undertake a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film.

News from Murray Brown (ON 1974) from Western Australia, he writes that his father John Brown, former Newington Maths teacher and Boarding House Master at age 87 is re-writing a mathematics text book for WA’s top finishing school, under the national curriculum, and after playing 3 games of championship chess against his computer daily, he is still sharp as a tack!

Congratulations Christian Poidevin (ON 2016) and Tom Serhon (ON 2016), the Randwick 1st Colts defeating Gordon in the Grand Final at Concord, 36-20.  The match was refereed by Bradley Smith (ON 2011). Congratulations Finn Kearns (ON 2017) who played in the Premiership winning 2nd Grade Colts.

Welcome to the world Maddison Chloe Sainsbury, daughter of Edward Sainsbury (ON 1989) and his partner, Cathy.

ONU Business Breakfast

2018 has seen the return of the ONU Business Breakfast.  These events have been very well received by all Old Boys and will continue in 2019.

We thank our speakers The Hon Robert Webster (ON 1969), Mr Brian Sommerlad (ON 1958), Ian Diery (ON 1967), His Hon Greg Grogin (ON 1976) and Stuart Fuller (ON 1984).
