Bravery

Jean-Luc Gallo (ON 2015) has recently been awarded a Bravery Medal by the Governor General of Australia for his role in restraining a violent attacker in one of his tutorials at the ANU in August 2017.

On 25 August 2017, Mr Jean-Luc Gallo intervened during a violent attack at a university in the
Australian Capital Territory.

At 9:15am Mr Gallo was attending a university lecture when he heard a female classmate begin to scream. From the front of the room, Mr Gallo saw a man, armed with a metal baseball bat, violently attack and injure a number of students. The lecturer was writing on the whiteboard and had her back to the commotion.

The offender then began to attack the lecturer from behind. He struck the lecturer several times knocking her to the ground. Using a book to protect herself the lecturer attempted to disarm the attacker before trying to move away.

Without hesitation, Mr Gallo stood up from his seat and challenged the attacker, causing the offender to turn his attention to him. The attacker then struck Mr Gallo a number of times whilst he advanced on the man in order to subdue him.

Despite his injuries, Mr Gallo managed to wrap his arms around the offender’s chest and pin his arms down. He then called for assistance from other students. Momentarily Mr Gallo released one of the offender’s arms which enabled the man to grab hold of the lecturer’s hair in an attempt to continue the attack.

Mr Gallo and others quickly restrained the man and held him until further assistance arrived.

By his actions, Mr Gallo displayed considerable bravery.

ONU & Tonga

In July this year a group of 30 students from Years 9 and 10 and four College staff travelled to Tupou College for the annual Service Learning Tour in Tonga.

The boys stayed at Tupou College and attended some classes there.  They also played Rugby against a Tupou College XV and spent time getting to know the Tupou College students and aspect of the Tongan way of life.

Each year the ONU and the College provide two full boarding bursaries to students of Tupou College to attend Newington for 3 years in Years 10 to 12.  The interviews for those bursary opportunities are held as part of the annual Service Learning Tour.  The ONU has a representative on the interview panel, which also includes 3 members of the College staff and the Principal of Tupou College.  The people comprising the interview panel this year were:

  • Rev Alifeleti ‘Atiola, Principal of Tupou College
  • Newington staff member Trent Driver (Deputy Head (Academic))
  • Newington staff member Nat Coull (Head of Boarding and PDHPE Teacher)
  • Newington staff member Cameron Quince (Head of Fletcher House and Technology Teacher and tour leader)
  • Tony Bosman (ON 1972) as this year’s ONU Representative.

Usually the ONU Tongan Branch leader, Steve Finau (ON 1966), also participates.  However Steve was not able to do so this year due to ill-health.

The interview panel felt that there were two standout candidates this year. The two boys who will receive the Bursaries for commencement in Year 10 in 2020 are:

  • Manase Fonokalafi
  • Sione Fonua.

Manase Fonokalafi was at the head of his class for his academic performance.  Manase is very musically active at Tupou.  He sings in the school choir, and plays cornet in the Tupou College Brass Band.  He wants to come to Newington to obtain an excellent education, and would like to be a teacher.

Sione Fonua has excellent grades for his academic performance.  He favours science, especially biology, and wishes to be a doctor like his mother. Sione’s father worked at Newington for a short period as a sports conditioning coach.  Sione enjoys rugby, loves reading and is very much looking forward to being a student at Newington.

While in Tonga, Tony Bosman took the opportunity to visit Steve Finau who had recently returned home to recuperate after a spell in hospital.  Steve looked well and sent his best wishes to his ON friends.

2019 ONU Annual Dinner

On Friday 9 August 130 Old Boys and current Parents gathered in Centenary Hall for the annual ONU Dinner.  The evening was a celebration of Newington men from across the ages.  It was fantastic to be joined by a table of Old Boys from the Class of 2018.

The night was an outstanding success thanks to Old Boys Deep Gujral (ON 1999) and Varun Gujral (ON 2005) for their hospitality and amazing food.  Everyone very much enjoyed the famous Manjits curries.

In addition to the wonderful food and bonhomie, the evening was also a financial success, raising in excess of $7,000 for the ONU Mental Health Fund.

Thank you to our sponsors Deep Gujral (ON 1999) and Varun Gujral (ON 2005), and supporters: Justin Bosilkovski (ON 2005), Alex Baykitch AM (ON 1982), Rod Bosman (ON 1978) and the College’s Office of Community and Development.

The ONU looks forward to celebrating our 125th Anniversary with all the Newington community in 2020.

Thank You!

Thank you to all who supported the Colleges’ Indigenous Education Program through the Chris Wild (ON 1991) Indigenous Bursary Appeal & Matching Program run from April to June 2019.

The Bursary’s goal is to raise $5 million, with the vision of funding an Indigenous boy to start a Newington College education, every year, year after year, forever.

We are now at 63% of our fundraising goal and with your ongoing support we will see that vision realised.

The Late Rob Wild (ON 1965), 2018 Newington Medallist, when addressing the boys as part of this years’ Newington Medallist Assembly, spoke passionately about the Wild Indigenous Bursary…

“This bursary is not charity. Far from it. It is much more an opportunity – one that cuts two ways – an educational opportunity for Indigenous boys but also and importantly, an educational opportunity for non-Indigenous boys and families to learn and understand more about the oldest living community on this planet and to show them the respect that they so fully deserve. Changing lives!”

Our first assembly in Term 3 was devoted to NAIDOC week, celebrating the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The three Chris Wild (ON 1991) Indigenous Bursary holders, Harrison Marsh (Year 10), Gage Phillips (Year 12) and Tallis McEwen (Year 7) along with Laiken Robinson-Cooper ( Year 7) shared their inspiring stories with the boys: their people, where they came from, their totems and their famous relatives.

The boys are thankful to both the Wild Family and Wild Bursary Donors for the opportunity to be attending Newington.

All donations large or small play a significant part and are gratefully received. Help us turn this significant vision into reality.

Dr Ron Lu (ON 1962) the 2018 Newington Medallist (International) has generously offered to host this year’s Hong Kong Cocktail Party for the Newington Community and we are honoured to have the College’s Headmaster Mr Michael Parker join us on the night.

Michael Parker commenced as Headmaster this year and is committed to the holistic development and wellbeing of every boy, and has a reputation for integrity, vision and innovation.  He is an enthusiastic proponent of the pursuit of a faith-based, liberal education.

This event is a not to be missed opportunity to hear from the Headmaster as he reflects on his first year and develops his views on the College’s path for the future.

We look forward to your company for what will be a great night of networking and catching up with fellow members of the Newington family in Hong Kong.
