| June 2016 ONU Enews

Welcome to the June edition of your ONU enews.

The College is gearing up for a series of building openings in July this  year, including the new Drama Centre and the dedicated Year 7 Centre adjacent to the Le Couteur Centre that was refurbished in 2016 . It is absolutely fantastic to see these great state-of-the-art facilities for the benefit of the boys. We all look forward to the removal of the demountable classrooms at the front of the school to be replaced by a new entrance and extra playing facilities.

Current students were treated to a visit, at last week’s assembly, by Trent Zimmerman (ON 1986), Member of the House of Representatives for the Liberal Party of Australia in the seat of North Sydney. Trent is pictured below in middle with Karl Watson (ON 1986) left, ONU Executive member, and Rod Bosman (ON 1978) Director of Community & Development at Newington.

ONU Careers Evening

A big thank you to all the Old Boys who gave up their time to advise our senior boys at the ONU Careers Evening on Tuesday 14 June. Tupou College

Congratulations to Tupou College, Tonga who are celebrating their Sesquicentenary Celebrations. With our rich combined history and the success of six annual tours since 2010, this year’s Tupou College Sesquicentenary Tour to Tonga will be a fantastic opportunity to support our brothers as they celebrate an amazing 150 years.

The ONU has already successfully delivered our Sesquicentenary gift to Tupou College in the form of  new rugby goal posts and they are already installed and in use in preparation for the upcoming rugby and service learning tour by Year 10 boys . In addition, I note that over the past 18 months, after much discussion and consultation with our friends in Tonga, it has been decided that as a Sesquicentenary gift, Newington will present Tupou College with a new e-Learning Centre which will provide staff and students with regular access to technology.

The “Newington e-Learning Centre” will be housed in the soon to be completed Sesquicentenary Building on the Tupou College campus, the centre will include the installation of a classroom of 30 desktop computers, whiteboards and data projectors, a hands-on workshop “maker spaces”, as well as long term IT infrastructure, including networking for administration buildings, point-to-point Wi-Fi and the installation of Data projectors in the Moulton Chapel and teaching classrooms.

The Kingdom of Tonga and Newington College have been connected for nearly 150 years. Our relationship has taken many forms and has brought many benefits to our shared communities. The indications are that these connections will continue forever.

ONU Careers Evening – Tuesday 14 June

At the ONU Careers evening, over fifty Old Boys volunteered their time to advise senior students and share their career knowledge, insights and personal experience. Old Boys represented a wide range of professions from Accounting, Architecture and Constructions/Property Development to Marketing and Medicine. The wealth and breadth of expertise on the night, for the benefit of our boys, was invaluable.

The one-to-one advice expo setting promotes a valuable exchange of advice and questions. Students were encouraged to consider what they enjoy, what they’re good at and what the world needs and ask questions to reflect on this. As well as fostering interest in their industry, advice from Old Boys was broad ranging covering alternate paths to their career, most enjoyable and least enjoyable aspects of their industry, biggest challenges and future prospects of their industry and what personal characteristics do people need to be successful in their industry or profession.

Pictured above is 2UE radio presenter Stuart Bocking (ON 1986). Pictured below is ONU Centennial Trust recipient James Henderson (ON 2008) cancer and medical researcher.

An Opportunity to Support our new Drama Centre

Our new Drama Centre is part of the College’s aims to continue to foster talent and skills in the dramatic arts and over the past year, builders have been hard at work creating a new space for the College’s thespians to take to the stage. Our brand new 200 seat Drama Centre will be officially opened on Monday 18 July 2016 by His Majesty, Kind Tupou VI, King of Tonga.

We have commissioned a new play for the occasion and now is the chance to see Your Name in Lights on opening night…

Last month, we wrote to all Old Boys advising of the launch of the Naming opportunities for our new Drama Centre and we have had a very encouraging response to our Seat Sponsorship and Supporters Wall programs. The relatively low entry price is proving attractive to many and you still have a chance to secure your seat for only $990 or a plaque on our Supporters Wall for only $330 and reserve your seat for the Opening Night performance of our commissioned play, Michael Swordfish on 18 July. Please Click Here to find out more.

We are also very pleased to announce that the College Council has approved for fundraising to formally commence to support the Naming of the following venues in the Drama Centre:

Sir Talbot Duckmanton CBE (ON 1938) Drama Centre

Sir Talbot Duckmanton (1921-1985) was not only an Old Boy of Newington, matriculating in 1938 but when on to a distinguished career as a war correspondent in the Australian Army and Air Force. Post war he had a long and successful career at ABC Radio and Television, culminating in his appointment as General Manager from 1965 until his retirement in 1982. He also served as Chairman of the Newington College Council from 1968 to 1973.

The Duckmanton family have kindly agreed to allow the Newington Drama Centre to be named in honour of their late father and for fundraising to be undertaken in his name.

The College is looking to raise $500,000 to support the naming of the Sir Talbot Duckmanton CBE (ON 1938) Drama Centre, with all funds raised be directed towards Newington Drama. Please Click Here to make a donation.

Haddrick Family Theatre

The Haddrick Family have had a long association with Newington College and are very honoured to have the Drama Theatre named in their honour and encourage donations to the $100,000 appeal in their name.

Greg Haddrick (ON 1978) is the Director of Screentime Productions, the company behind many television series including Underbelly and Janet King to name two. Greg is the son of legendary Australian actor Ron Haddrick and sister of Lyn Haddrick, herself no stranger to the thespian world. Greg and his wife Margaret Hamley’s son Jack is also a Newington Old Boy, graduating in 2013.

We are pleased to announce that we have already received a single donation of $20,000 from an anonymous Old Boy and are now looking for your support to reach our target. All funds raised will go to support Newington Drama. Please Click Here to make a donation.

Joy Christian Foyer

The MOONs (Mothers of Old Newingtonians) are the driving force behind the $25,000 appeal to name the Drama Centre Foyer in honour of Joy Christian.

Joy is not only the founder of the MOONs, and a mother of 3 Old Boys – Tim (ON 1978), Matthew (ON 1981) and Nick (ON 1982) but her granddaughter Jessica is a long serving member of the Newington staff and Joy herself served some 20 years on the College Council.

In the context of the Drama Centre, over a period of some 40 years, Joy spent countless hours making many of the costumes that graced our productions both large and small.

We congratulate our beloved MOONs (your mothers!) for this wonderful initiative and encourage your support of this appeal. All funds raised will go to support Newington Drama. Please Click Here to make a donation.

Bob James Room

The College Staff have initiated fundraising for $10,000 to name the Bob James Room in honour of the much loved and respected former Head of Drama for some 30 years.

One staff member has already donated $1,000 to get the appeal started and the staff would love to see Old Boys who were taught by Bob James throughout the 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s to support this appeal.

All funds raised will go to support Newington Drama. Please Click Here to make a donation.

Joan Gray Room

Through the generous support of an Old Boy, Miss Joan Gray will now be forever remembered as an integral part of Newington Drama.

Joan Gray was the long serving teacher of 4th Class at Wyvern and the Head of the Wyvern Choir for many decades. What is not generally known is that Miss Gray was the driving force behind the re-emergence of Drama as an important co-curricular program at Newington. It was through her Wyvern Drama productions, starting with the 1965 production of Toad of Toad Hall, that the love of Drama was imbued into a whole generation of Newington boys.

Through this generous donation, the College is honoured to recognise Miss Joan Gray in this way.

The Drama Centre is an important addition to the Newington campus and will serve the College and our boys for generations to come. We do hope you will take the opportunity to secure yourself a tax deduction and support our Drama Centre Naming Program.

Newington’s Anzac Day 2016

Newington’s Anzac Parade was held on the Johnson Oval on Wednesday 27 April before the whole school and many parents and Old Boys.

Stafford Lowe MBE (ON 1958) was Reviewing Officer and the commentary on the day was provided by Lieutenant Colonel John Moore AM RFD CFC Retd (ON 1953), who for many years has provided the commentary for ABC TV’s Anzac Day Broadcast.

This year the College revived an old tradition, whereby the Headmaster read out the names of The Fallen. Whilst Dr David Mulford read the names, 176 Year 12 boys installed white wooden crosses on the bank overlooking Johnson Oval representing Newington’s Fallen in the First and Second World Wars and the Vietnam War. The impact of the loss represented by our young men was lost on nobody.

Wreaths were also laid at the Memorial for the Dead in memory of Old Boys and staff that fought in all wars. In particular, a wreath was laid on behalf of the Millner Family to record the 80th Anniversary of the Memorial Drive, a gift of Col T G Millner MC VD (ON 1904) to the College and those families of WW1 Fallen.

Lest We Forget.

Endowment Fund for Newington College

Preparing our kids for the future is going to take all of us working together
Barack Obama

44th President of the United States

At last year’s Prize Giving (Speech Night), the Chairman of the College Council, Mr Tony McDonald (ON 1976) announced the launch of the Newington College Endowment Fund.

The Endowment Fund has been established so that, by 2040, we can continually provide 100 potentially outstanding young boys from families with proven socio-economic need the opportunity of a Newington education through a Bursary.

This is Newington’s social justice policy in action, by actively pursuing our value of diversity through focus on socio-economic inequality. Our boys come from many cultures, faiths and social demographics. However, as economic pressures on families increase, Newington is aware that without addressing this issue now, our socio-economic diversity will contract in the years ahead.

Bursaries are means tested scholarships, so the recipients will only be sons of families with proven socio-economic need – those most deserving of this once in a lifetime opportunity.

One young Old Boy who has benefitted from a Newington Bursary is 2005 Senior Prefect and Endowment Fund Ambassador Justin Bosilkovki. You can be inspired by Justin’s story and see the short video he made for us below.

Justin’s video is part of our new Foundation Insite and everything you wanted to know about the Endowment program can be found here.

The College currently has a modest Bursary Fund and a number of individual Bursaries. These have been funded over many years by generous Old Boys, parents and other members of the Newington Community through tax deductible donations or as a gift from a Will through our Founders Society, the College’s Bequest program.

To fund 100 Bursaries, we need to raise $240 million by 2040. But those 100 boys will benefit only if we start now and to do that, we need your help.

Please click Here to make a donation. Every donation – large or small, regular or one off – is greatly appreciated and will see us closer to our goal of offering 100 deserving boys the opportunity to receive a Newington education.

Gifts to the College Endowment Fund are 100% tax deductible and every dollar is used for the benefit of our boys. With 30 June fast approaching, will you consider a gift today?
