Newington Golf Day.

Newington Baptism Sunday.

Congratulations to Nick Grogin (ON 2009) and his fiancée Taylor on the recent birth of their Daughter Isla Rae Grogin, who was baptized by Rev Peter Morphew in the College Chapel on Sunday 23rd October 2016. They were joined on the day by a very proud Grandfather, Deputy Chairman of the College Council, His Honour Magistrate Greg Grogin (ON 1976) and Grandmother Wendy and Isla’s uncle, Nick’s brother James Grogin (ON 2012).

Archer James Williams, the Son of Stuart and Meredith Williams and Grandson of Stephen Gay (ON 1969) was also baptized by Rev Peter Morphew on the day.

The College Chapel is available to all Old Boys, Staff and their families for Baptisms, Weddings or Funerals. There is no charge for the use of our Chapel however, you may wish to consider a donation to assist with its upkeep. Please contact Julie Gigg in the Office of Community and Development for all enquires.

Together Forever at Newington.

It is the end of an era for another Newington College year 12 Senior Class. As they receive parting words of wisdom and say farewell to the school, it is a time of reflection on the things they have achieved and the friendships they have built. Many mates will pursue different paths, but there are four boys who will always be together at Newington after their parents surprised them with a seat dedication in our new Drama Theatre.

Senior Prefect Jack Jacobs (ON 2016), Jacob Turl (ON 2016), Terry Christoforou (ON 2016) and Leon Vitogiannis (ON 2016) always chose to sit together in the back row of the Old Boys Lecture Theatre during their time at the College. Now, in the back row of the Drama Theatre are four seats dedicated with the names of these four mates. This seat dedication will create an enduring legacy and regardless of where the future takes these boys, they will always be together at Newington.

The family of Senior Prefect Jack Jacobs (ON 2016) has also sponsored a seat in the Old Boys Lecture Theatre in Jack’s name. This follows the sponsoring of a seat by the family of 2015 Senior Prefect Saahil Parekh. We are hoping that George Long (ON 1980), father of 2017 Senior Prefect Mitchell Long will keep this tradition going.

If you would like to sponsor a seat in either the Drama Theatre or Old Boys Lecture Theatre in your own name or, as a wonderful gesture of gratitude, to honour your Alumni year, parents, teachers or to recognise the achievements of your son as a proud parent or Old Boy, please click here for further information.

Newington College Endowment Fund – Why an Endowment Fund?

The Endowment Fund

Our Vision

The Newington College Endowment Fund has been established so that by 2040 we are able to fully fund the equivalent of 100 means-tested full student positions at the College at any one time. These will be bursaries for boys with promise and proven socio-economic need. Providing a Newington education to these deserving boys is aligned to our theme of empowering young men to “Discover what’s Possible” and is central to our Community values of diversity and inclusiveness, as well as to our social justice program.

Bursaries already exist at Newington – be they Tongan boys from Tupou College, Sudanese boys garnered from our links with the Sudanese refugee community, Indigenous boys including the Chris Wild (ON 1991) Bursaries, or boys from any, and all, ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds. The Endowment Fund represents a carefully constructed way of making bursaries a centre piece of our social justice program, and of Newington more generally.

Newington was founded on the guiding principles of education for boys of all faiths and backgrounds. The Endowment Fund enshrines, and is true to, our Founders’ ideals.

To show the passion and commitment to the Endowment Fund, we have included an extract from the speech given by Newington College Chairman – Tony McDonald (ON 1976) at the Newington Ball in September 2016.

“And it’s this community – and the future of our NEW community, that I want to briefly focus on tonight.

Put starkly, the future of Newington is in our hands. Your presence here tonight will help influence the future for all our Newington boys!

As Chairman of Council, I can confirm to you that our school is thriving.  We are fortunate to have tremendous leadership, thank you David Mulford and a superb team across all three campuses.  Enrolments are through the roof.

So why, when our College is oversubscribed with enrolments until 2026, are we commencing a drive for support of our Newington Endowment Fund?

Our not-negotiable, cast in stone founding principles provide the simple answer.

Newington was established on a foundation of social justice in education, for boys of all faiths and backgrounds. Our history is rich with stories of boys who required financial assistance to experience a Newington education. These boys went on to make outstanding contributions to society.

We know these values – diversified, inclusive social justice – are important to you and define us at Newington and indeed as Australians.

But affordability, is a key issue.  And none more so than for families from deserving but economically challenged backgrounds.  We’re mindful that these families have sons.

And as economic pressures on these families inevitably rise, we are well aware that without addressing this issue now, and in a material way, our socio-economic diversity will diminish in the years ahead. And this is a real concern all of us.

So where to from here? Well, we can talk or we can act!

Hence, the Newington College Endowment Fund.  Our goal is 100% crystal clear.

  • One hundred fully funded bursaries in place at any one time, by 2040.
  • For one hundred boys from families with proven socio-economic need.
  • Boys, who have the ‘spark’ and the promise of potential, but whose potential may go unrealised without our support.
  • Boys, to whom we can give the opportunity of a Newington education throughout secondary school.

And let us not forget that the boys who take up this opportunity will do so in the same spirit of justice.

They will understand that such an opportunity brings responsibilities to the College, to their families and to themselves.

They will be boys who will have the ability to “Discover what’s Possible” at Newington.

But let me just pause there to reflect on one other key aspect. And that is, that the benefits of our Endowment Fund will go further…

I’m thinking here of our own boys. Developing a deep culture of giving in our boys is a part of what it means to become men of substance.

For parents in the room, I recognise this is a long game! But, I think we all recognise that so too is the benefit of philanthropy.

So I come full circle, back to the future.

And tonight, we are taking a significant step towards it.

The school has seeded the fund and it is managed by the professionals at JB Were.  With donations of $1.5 million each year, indexed we will reach our target.

But the clock is ticking!  I urge you all to act.

So, in closing I’d like to once again, thank you for all your support, past present and future. Have a wonderful night.”

The future is New!

On Saturday 17 September over 520 parents from the Stanmore, Lindfield and Wyvern campuses came together for the Newington Ball at the Four Points by Sheraton.

The theme of the night, ‘The Future is New’, promoted the Newington College Endowment Fund and the College’s goal of providing 100 fully funded bursaries to boys of potential and demonstrated need by 2040. Masters of Ceremonies and Newington parents, Mrs Kylie Gillies and Mr Craig Reucassel, guided guests through what life would be like by the year 2040.

A highlight of the evening was “The future is New” video; the P&F asked Wyvern, Lindfield and Year 7 Stanmore boys to imagine their future and that of the College in 2040. They asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” “What will school be like in 30 years’ time?” You can view the video by clicking here.

A huge thank you to Newington parent, Mr Matthew Cleary, who spent over 45 hours editing the six minute video.

Dinner, dancing and bidding on live and silent auction items created a vibe of excitement that was sustained throughout the night. Endowment Fund Ambassador, Mr Justin Bosilkovski (ON 2005), gave an emotional speech that paid a special tribute to his mother Suzi, while Chairman of the Newington College Council, Mr Tony McDonald (ON 1976), gave a passionate presentation about the diversity that the Endowment Fund brings to the College.

Thank you to all the parents that attended the Ball and also to those that assisted with set up, donating prizes and making pledges. The night could not have been a success without the focused and functional Mrs Kylie Ann Mayer, Mrs Julie Gigg and Mrs Marnie Reid – thank you.

Through the generosity of our many sponsors and supporters, and those who attended the night, we are pleased to announce that our fundraising target was well and truly achieved with $167,488 raised for the Endowment Fund.

Our thanks go to the Newington Support Groups who also gave generously to the fund, helping us exceed our target of $100,000. Our focus will continue in 2017 and beyond to support the Endowment Fund.

Former Stanmore P&F President –  Andrew Loveridge, proudly handed over the cheque which calculated the total contributions from the Ball during the P&F AGM on Tuesday 8 November 2016.

If you wish to contribute to the Endowment Fund you can donate via this online link. All donations are tax deductible.

The future certainly is ‘New’.

2nd Edition of eNews for Past Parents

Earlier this year we issued our first edition of this electronic newsletter to past parents of Newington College and we were overcome by the positive response from so many.

Of course, not every past parent has kept their contact details updated with us and so there are many that are missing out on all the good news stories that we have to offer. If you have received this from a friend or know of a past parent that is missing out, please contact us and we can update our records.

Newington’s Office of Community and Development is the contact point for all past parents and we want to keep in contact with as many of the Newington Community as possible.

We are very proud of our publications and we hope you enjoy reading the stories we bring you. We would love to hear your stories as well, so don’t be shy and let us know what you or your son are doing in your lives.

Newington is in great shape. Our academic and co-curricular program, together with the grounds, buildings and facilities, continue to allow all our boys to ‘Discover what’s Possible’. Despite having waiting lists through to 2027, we maintain priority for sons and grandsons of Old Boys as long as they are registered in accordance with the policy on our website.

This year, the College Council moved to ensure that the socio-economic diversity of Newington is maintained by establishing the Newington Endowment Fund. This fund will provide up to 100 Bursaries (means tested scholarships) by 2040. We need to raise $240 million over the next 25 years to make that a reality but this is so important that we cannot afford to fail.

This Past Parent Alumni eNews is your publication and we would love to keep in contact and hear from you with your stories. Likewise, if you do not wish to receive further news from us, please email back and let us know.

Finally, my best wishes to everybody for a joyous Christmas with your family and for a healthy and prosperous 2017.

Kind regards,

Rod Bosman (ON 1978)

Director of Community and Development

Christmas Message from the Headmaster

It has been a year of wonderful highs and some sad lows. The strength of our special community was evident in the way everyone rallied together to support each other during the tough times with some untimely deaths during the year.

The many highs will be recorded in the Annual Report that will be published on the website in December and updated in January 2017 after the IB Diploma results.

In community news, over 520 attended the Newington Ball this year. Over 13 support groups across the 3 campuses combined to hold a highly successful Back to Newington Day. I was delighted the MOONs highlighted the contribution of Mrs Joy Christian at their luncheon this year.

In changes to parent organisation leadership, Mr David Sanders will be taking over from Mr Andrew Loveridge as the Stanmore P&F President. Mrs Lillian Fadel will be taking over from Mrs Natalie Mina as the Wyvern Prep P&F President and Mrs Julianne Ashmore will continue in 2017 as the Lindfield Prep P&F President.

Mr Greg Mitchell (ON 1970) will be taking over from Dr Rod Thomas as the Chairman of the Founders Society, Newington’s Bequest Program. Mr Bruce Mellor (ON 1982) completes a three year term as ONU President this year.

I thank all our valued outgoing volunteers for their fine leadership and contribution to Newington College.

I wish all families a loving and caring family Christmas season.

Dr David Mulford

Headmaster

Melbourne Cup Lunch 2016

The Melbourne Cup stops the nation but it didn’t stop the ladies of Newington from NEW Women to MOONs joining together for a Melbourne Cup lunch on Tuesday 1 November.

Prescott Hall was a hive of activity with many of the MOONs reuniting. A fashion parade showcasing the latest summer collection from Piamento, modelled by MOONs Tracey Markos, was one of the highlights of the afternoon but as the race drew closer and the excitement level rose we saw all the ladies cheering on their selection in the great race.

All funds raised from the lunch will go towards the Joy Christian room in the Drama Centre. Joy was a founding MOON creating the social network over a lunch at her home. The annual lunch for all MOONs was established at the College on Back to Newington Day in 2005.The MOONs Lunch has grown in numbers each year, with over 85 MOONs attending the lunch at this year’s Back to Newington Day.

The Melbourne Cup lunch will continue to grow each year and all Mothers (past and present) of Stanmore, Wyvern and Lindfield are welcome. Save the date for 2017 – Tuesday 7 November.

“The ‘Women of Newington’ – have always been a wonderful engine room of endeavour, contribution and practical support of Newington. I salute them.” Dr David Mulford, Headmaster.
