The Curse of Mungana – David E Moore (ON 1956)

As part of his retirement project, David E Moore is soon to launch his book, ‘The Curse of Mungana’ in Brisbane on 25 February.

The Mungana scandal is not just the story of a failed mining venture and its victims, but an expose of the arrogance of powerful politicians who compromised integrity for personal greed.

Late in the 19th century mining entrepreneurs were eager to profit from over optimistic expectations of “another Broken Hill” in North Queensland. Ventures thrived with private
railways linking new mines, including the town of Mungana. In the wake of “1,000 disappointments” of the failed Chillagoe Company, the new Labor Government acquired the
assets.

This was the signal for opportunistic operators and politicians to orchestrate secret deals, allowing them to enjoy financial benefits at government expense. The critical acquisition was Mungana Mines. Its largest shareholder was William McCormack, future Queensland Premier. This culminated in a Royal Commission, whose bombshell report exposed key beneficiaries, including McCormack and his friend, Edward Theodore, then Treasurer of Australia.

In the aftermath of the scandal several myths have arisen. These are identified and refuted.

It is pertinent to ask if ethical standards have really improved over the past 80 years.

2017 Year 12 introduced to the ONU

In a first for Newington, the first day back for the boys was given over to meeting their Mentor and the opportunity for boys and parents to attend a series of seminars throughout the day.

One of these was focussed on Life After Year 12 and was presented by the Headmaster Dr David Mulford and Director of Community and Development Rod Bosman (ON 1978). The Headmaster focussed on university choices, ATARs, schoolies and the like, whilst Rod Bosman had the opportunity to introduce the ONU to many Year 11 and 12 boys that attended.

As all these boys will eventually be ONU Life Members, it was a fantastic opportunity to explain what the ONU was about and some of the benefits of membership. Opportunities such as mentoring and careers advice were discussed and one Year 11 boy asked to be put in touch with any old Boys who are Archaeologists – and we did find one!

During the year, the Office of Community and Development through the Alumni Department will continue to engage with the current Year 12 and we look forward to welcoming them as members of the ONU at year’s end.

Malcolm Brown (ON 1964) – Journalist, Editor and Co-Author.

Malcolm Brown (ON 1964) has had a brief post-retirement flurry in the media with reminiscences on the Azaria Chamberlain case – sparked by the sad demise of Michael Chamberlain in January. He has also been hauled back into the media, briefly, to talk about his coverage of the Granville rail disaster in 1977. At Granville, during his two days of coverage, he was unaware that the train that had preceded the ill-fated 6.09 from Mt Victoria was carrying the woman he was destined to marry, Ingeborg Koch. Ingeborg had caught the earlier train at Blaxland only because the guard had seen her running for it.

Brown, known as “Charlie” Brown in his schooldays, went to Wesley College, Sydney University, and completed an Arts degree. He started his journalism career as a cadet on the Daily Liberal, a newspaper at Dubbo where he had grown up, but was obliged to do National Service. He was selected for officer training and commissioned but did not get to Vietnam. Demobilised, he resumed with the Daily Liberal, then shifted to the Sydney Morning Herald in 1972 and stayed there for the next 40 years. In that time he was a general reporter. He specialised in police operations, royal commissions and other inquiries. Over the years he has been arrested, shot at, sued, threatened and beaten up. He was obliged to get out of Belfast quickly in 1979 when tipped off that the IRA was coming for him.

Brown was a correspondent in Newcastle, Brisbane, and London. He was dispatched to the Middle East in 1991 to cover the Gulf War and did numerous trips to Fiji during the civil strife in 1987, 2000 and 2006. His career story was the disappearance of baby Azaria Chamberlain at Ayers Rock in August 1980. Assigned to the case in September that year, Brown became disturbed when it was reinvestigated in 1981 and Michael and Lindy Chamberlain committed for trial. His feeling that something was going terribly wrong strengthened as the case progressed. He erupted when the couple were convicted and from then was at the vanguard in a long and tortuous struggle to get Lindy freed and the case reinvestigated. He was gratified in 2012, when he retired, to be able to report on the final chapter – the coroner’s finding that a dingo had taken the baby.

Brown has written or co-authored a number of books, including Justice and Nightmares, Case Studies in Forensic Science; Australian Crime; Australia’s Worst Disasters; Rorting, the Great Australian Crime, and You’re Leaving Tomorrow, an account of National Service and the Vietnam War. He married Ingeborg Koch in 1978 and the first 18 months of their marriage was spent in London, where their first child, Stewart, was born. On returning to Australia, they had two more children: Grace, born in 1982, and Douglas, born 1987. Since retirement, Brown has pursued a career as a singer with the Sydney Welsh Choir and with Rotary where he has been made a Paul Harris Fellow. A grandfather of three, he is an Anglican churchgoer and has served as chairman of the Wesley College Foundation.

Appearing in the Sydney Morning Herald on Thursday January 19th 2017, Malcolm relived the horror of the Granville train disaster of 1977 in his article titled, ‘The girl who wasn’t among the 83 dead in horror crash’. Click here to read the article.

Since 2013 Malcolm has generously given of his time to conduct a number of interviews for our ‘Notable Newingtonians’ series, which will be included in our new Archive Insight page later this year.

 Sydney Conservatorium of Music Offer

Congratulations to Leon Vitogiannis (ON 2016)  who has received an offer from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music to study a Bachelor of Music  (Performance).  Entry into the  Conservatorium, the Nation’s premier tertiary music institution, is fiercely competitive. Graduates from the Conservatorium enjoy  careers as  soloists or  orchestral musicians, composers,  academics and educators, critics, writers and administrators.

On a recent trip to New York, Leon had the opportunity to meet and receive an autograph from Plácido Domingo who was staring as Nabucco in the  Met. The opera  was a salute to James Levine as it was his 2nd last opera as a conductor. International press have described Plácido in the international press as “the  King of  Opera,” “a true  renaissance man in music” and “the greatest operatic artist of modern times”. Leon was awe struck that at the age of 75, the ‘King of Opera’ could so  masterfully project across such a  grand theatre.

From the Archives – Daily Bread

In the years of and on either side of the First World War, the College kept a small herd of cows to provide fresh milk for the boarders and staff. But what of that other staple of the daily school diet, bread?

The College had a kitchen, but no baker and our bread most likely came from a source nearby. In 1910 a large brick bakery was built on Percival Road, just north of the Stanmore railway station, on recently subdivided land from the ‘South Annandale Estate’, now the suburb of Stanmore. In 1914 the NSW Government purchased the bakery and established the State Bakery, producing bread for the city. While financially successful, the main purpose of the Bakery appears to have been to regulate the market and prevent profiteering, a significant issue during the War. The Bakery also provided training and testing facilities for the 3rd Australian Field Bakery in 1916 before it left for the Western Front.

The State Bakery was sold in about 1925 but continued in operation as the Automatic Bread Baking Company (ABBCO), one of the largest independent bread bakers in Sydney for many years.

The Bakery was built with a ‘Federation arts and crafts’ façade which can still be seen at 92–96 Percival Road, while its location there is commemorated in the name of the Old Bakery café (where I bought my coffee this morning).

This photograph, taken in April 1916, shows a motor lorry which could carry 1800 loaves and represented cutting edge delivery technology at the time. The photograph is from the State Archives collection (NRS4481 MS3822P) and features in their current exhibition, ‘Windows into Wartime’. It also appears in a great new book, New South Wales and the Great War, by Naomi Parry and Brad Manera, which has been distributed to schools across NSW. Our copy is available in the Library.

‘Celebrating Eighty years on – a gift remembered’

In a special final assembly for 2016 on Wednesday 30 November, the College welcomed back the Millner family for a re-dedication of the Millner Gates and Memorial Drive. The gates and the drive were opened 80 years ago in 1936.

Robert Millner (ON 1968) officially unveiled the plinth that will sit alongside the Millner Gates – the first six of the adjacent stone wall panels and the Memorial Drive, that were all donated by his grandfather Colonel Tom Millner (ON 1903) and were named in memory of Tom’s father, William James Millner.

Rob Millner was a Newington Boarder from the age of 8 and his qualities as a leader and school citizen emerged while he was still at Wyvern House. During his time at Stanmore, he was the Captain of the 1st XI and played in the 1st XV. He was also appointed Prefect in his final year.

Since leaving Newington, Rob Millner has built a successful career as a corporate executive, notably as Chairman of Washington H. Soul Pattinson and Brickworks Limited.

During the Assembly, Council Chairman Tony McDonald (ON 1976) joined with Rob to pay tribute to his aunt Mrs Jean Millner, who recently passed away. During our Sesquicentenary year, Jean generously endowed the Jim Millner (ON 1937) Bursary – giving a boy the opportunity to attend the College from Year 7 until the completion of Year 12.

Rob Millner, his sister Anni McNiven and Bruce Bagley OAM (ON 1958) had the opportunity to chat with the current Jim Millner (ON 1937) Bursary holder Simi Afeaki (10/KL) and saw what a talented young gentleman he has become with the opportunities he has been given as a recipient of this Bursary.

It was an honour and privilege for the College to welcome the Millner family back to Newington on this important occasion.

Our Newest Old Boys (ON 2016) IB Results

The International Baccalaureate Diploma graduates from 2016 gathered in the Council Boardroom on Thursday, 5 January to celebrate their exceptional results, both individually and as a cohort. Staff joined over 20 boys to celebrate with the obviously delighted group and to hear the announcements of overseas and early entry offers to diverse university programs.

The Deputy Headmaster, Mr David Roberts spoke to the boys of the College’s pride in their achievements, while acknowledging this particular cohort’s commitment to and support for each other.

Deputy Head of Stanmore (Academic), Mr Trent Driver, agreed and reminded the boys about all that it takes to get to this point and that while their mark is a ticket to the opportunities beyond the College, it is the reward for two years in an academically challenging course of study.

Results highlights for the 2016 IB Diploma Programme cohort of 37 boys include:

3 Perfect Scores

Congratulations to our 3 students achieving a perfect IB score of 45/45 converting to an ATAR of 99.95, of only 94 to do so worldwide:

  • Sebastian Iannuzzi
  • Michael Li
  • Eric Sheng

We also congratulate another 9 boys achieving a score of 40- 44:

  • Jeremi Campese – 44 (99.85)
  • Eamon Barrett, Daniel Cordeschi, William Ryan – 43 (99.70)
  • Stephen Chan, Alex Goth, Marco Stocca – 42 (99.45)
  • Tom Foley, Jack Ryan – 40 (98.30)

31 boys from the cohort of 37 achieving a score that gave them an ATAR over 90.

These strong results across the whole cohort meant Newington’s IB Diploma graduates achieved a mean score of 37 equating to an ATAR of 95.90, a wonderful achievement by any standard.

Newington’s IB Coordinator, Ms Briony Morath noted two features contributing to the strong results for 2016 Year 12.

1) The impressive number of students receiving the maximum Grade A (Grades from A-E) in the Extended Essay component of the Programme, significantly above the worldwide averages:

  • 17 boys receiving a Grade A
  • 10 boys receiving a Grade B
  • So, 73% of students achieving an A or B Grade.

2) The examination results of the boys, for the majority of the cohort, being their best academic performances in each subject over the course of their two years of study.

Combined with the School’s very strong HSC results these IB results complete the picture of a high performing Year 12 from 2016.  We are very proud of our boys’ efforts and academic performance, and the efforts of those teachers who worked with them along the way.

A Huge Thanks Gents

On behalf of the gents involved in the ‘Newington Old Boys – Team JT Snr’ Movember team for 2016 I would like to extend our thanks for the support of the Newington Old Boys Community.

This year we set our goal of having 40 Old Boys involved and raising $10,000 which were both surpassed, with 47 Old Boys raising $10,831 for a number of important men’s health initiatives.

These efforts wouldn’t be possible without the generous donations and support particularly of the ONU who have got behind the team over the past 5 years.

We look forward to bigger and better things in 2017 as we endeavour to stop men dying too young.

Jordan Townsend (ON 2011)
