Back to Newington Day 2018

Saturday, 11 August is Back to Newington Day – one of the biggest days on the Newington College calendar. Part fair, part marketplace, part entertainment hub, Back to Newington Day is packed with food stalls, music, flowers, fresh produce, fun for the kids … and some of the most competitive home sporting fixtures of the year. The day is held at our Stanmore Road campus, and attracts thousands of boys, families, staff, Old Boys and community members.

The P&F Communities of Stanmore, Wyvern and Lindfield would love you to be involved, firstly because Back to Newington Day is loads of fun, and secondly because all the money we raise goes back to the support groups who ensure Newington College boys get the best experience possible from their co-curricular activities every year.

Mark the day in your diary, and invite friends and family to come along. Centenary Hall will be buzzing with the Marketplace, the Black & White Café, stalls selling homemade cakes, pre-loved books and vintage clothes, and a silent auction. Come along and meet Willie the Wyvern and catch up with familiar faces.

The annual MOONs lunch will be held in Prescott Hall with a commemorative photo to start at 12:30 on the steps of Founders building and then lunch for the Mothers that have raised their boys to become Newington men of substance. If you would like to attend the MOONs lunch, please click on the payment link to purchase your ticket

We look forward to enjoying Back to Newington Day with you.

Newington P&F Ball

The Newington P&F Ball will take place on Saturday 1 September. It will be a fantastic night, a chance to gather together the Newington Community and an opportunity to thank Dr David Mulford for 10 years of service to the College.

Returning Master of Ceremonies and current parents, Kylie Gillies and Craig Reucassel will take us on a journey through the years of Dr David Mulford and some of the highlights of the College with the 90 year celebration of the Parents and Friends Association. We will also be entertained by cover band Wonderbrass so you can dance the night away. As it’s a “fun” and fund raising there will be live auctions, silent auctions and your opportunity to Crack the Code on a wine fridge filled with premium wine.

The purpose of the Newington Ball is raise funds for the Endowment Fund so that by 2040 we will be able to fully fund the equivalent of 100 full fee-paying student’s positions. These will be bursaries for boys with promise and proven socio-economic needs.

As Dr Mulford retires at the end of 2018 he has generously allowed his name to be applied to one of the bursaries in the College’s Endowment Fund creating The Mulford Bursary – Celebrating Diversity. If you can’t make it along to the night but would like to donate to the Mulford Bursary click on this link. Thank you for your support.

Round up your friends, old and NEW, organise a table and prepare for a night to remember.

We look forward to seeing you there where…

Thank you for your support and generosity

Thank you to everyone that has supported the College’s Endowment Fund so far this year.  With your support and generosity, we had a successful end of financial year for both the Wild Indigenous and Mulford Bursaries.

June 30 fundraising has us at halfway to secure an enduring legacy for the Chris Wild (ON 1991) Indigenous Bursary.  This is a fantastic result.  We thank our Community who have united to support the gift matching campaign.

The aim of the College is to have this Bursary self sufficient and guarantee the opportunity of a Newington education to an indigenous Boy every year, forever.  With your ongoing goodwill and support along with that of current and new Ambassadors, we have the opportunity to award a Wild Bursary every year from 2020.

June also saw the launch of The Mulford Bursary in honour of our Headmaster Dr David Mulford as he retires this year after leading the College for ten of its most successful years ever.

Again, with your generous support, The Mulford Bursary has reached its first $100,000 and we thank most sincerely those who supported this great cause. Fundraising continues as we strive to reach our $770,000 target. The P&F Ball on 1 September is your next opportunity to support the Mulford Bursary with all proceeds on the night added to the Fund. The first Mulford Bursary holder will begin their Newington journey as soon as our target is reached.

Be it the Wild Indigenous or Mulford Bursary, all donations, great and small, will make a difference.

Newington MOONs

In 1973, the Parents and Friends (P & F) Association and the Rowers Association were the only two parent support groups allowed at Newington College. Both groups worked very hard to raise money for the College, with Market Day, now Back to Newington Day, being the Rowers Association annual fundraising day. Joy Christian had three sons attend Newington between 1973 to 1982, and with all three being Rowers, Joy was a committed volunteer of the Rowers Association (whom she called “Rowers Mothers”).

By 1988, this original group of Rowers Mothers were no longer current parents. They had forged such close relationships over the years but now no longer saw each other regularly. To encourage the continuation of these friendships, Joy decided to host a lunch for the Rowers Mothers at her home. This continued each year, until some twenty years later it was suggested to host an annual lunch at Back to Newington Day and include all mothers. Thus the name – Mothers of Old Newingtonians (MOONs) was established.

The annual MOONs Lunch has grown in numbers each year, with over 75 MOONs attending the lunch at Back to Newington Day in 2017. If you would like to attend the 2018 MOONs Lunch it will be held on Back To Newington Day, Saturday 11 August commencing with a photo on the steps of Founders at 12:30pm. Gather your friends and join us for lunch and take the opportunity to say your farewell to Dr David Mulford in his retiring year. Bookings can be made online.

In the words of former Headmaster, AJ (Tony) Rae, Headmaster 1972 – 1993

The ‘Women of Newington’ – what would Newington do without the mothers, who day to day, do so much? I have great admiration for them”.

Keeping in touch.
Over the years many email addresses for past families were lost during technology upgrades at Newington, we are hoping to grow the MOONs communications and connections through email. If you wish to be placed on the MOONs mailing list or would like to be connected to the MOONs (unofficial) Facebook page please email community@newington.nsw.edu.au

Football End of Season Dinner – Celebrating 30 Years of GPS Football at Newington

The Newington College Football Association (NCFA) will hold the 2018 End of Season Dinner and celebrate 30 years of GPS Football at Newington.

Football became an official sport at Newington in 1973 and we fielded teams in a competition comprising CAS and GPS schools starting that year. Our first Soccer 1st XI was fielded in 1975. It was played within the school, e.g. in House comps, for years before that. 1988 was the start of the official GPS competition and the Football Association will be celebrating the highlights of those years.

Many Old Boys who played in the 1988 session have been invited to attend so it should be a wonderful night to catch up and discuss everything Football. If you have any Football memorabilia or images from 1988 until 2018, we would love to include these in the program. Please contact Community@newington.nsw.edu.au and we can pass on your details.

Attendance is open to all the Newington Football Community past and present. Tickets can be purchased online using this ticket link.

2018 Career Expo update

On a very wet June evening, the annual Careers Expo was held across several venues on the Stanmore campus. Nearly 50 exhibitors set up in the Centenary Hall, creating something of a carnival atmosphere. These came from the major universities across New South Wales and ACT, private colleges engaged in everything from Early Childhood Care to Hospitality to Event Management, as well as TAFE and Defence. There were representatives from organisations involved in getting Australian students places in US Colleges and others involved in vocational pathways.

73 ONUs and parents formed panels in the Year 12 Common Room in the Rae Centre to address the questions presented by the boys. Industries represented included law, medicine, finance and banking, engineering and construction and many more. The experience the boys (and the Old Boys) get out of this exchange is very worthwhile and constructive.

We are always seeking assistance from Parents and Old Boys to add diversity for the students. It is always exciting to continue to bring the Newington Community together and help the boys explore opportunities in the workforce. The Career Expo will be held in June 2019 and we will be seeking expressions of interest from Old Boys, Past Parents and Current Parents to bring the community together.
