Rugby

The 2012 season has started with a series of trial games with boys and teams are showing good application and effort at training and matches.

Our “country fixture” saw Kinross Wolaroi head to Sydney for the first time, with 11 teams travelling to Newington across all age groups. They were a delight to host and a credit to their school. We would also like to acknowledge the hospitality and sportsmanship shown by the Newington boys on the day.

Trials against The King’s School and The Scots College have seen results evenly split between the Schools, with the Newington U15 and U14 age groups standing out. We have trails against St Joseph’s College on June 2 and Shore on June 16

2012 sees the reinstatement of the 3rd XV competition as a GPS premiership. The top three Opens teams have played some solid rugby with all teams recording a win and a loss against The Kings School and The Scots College.

Our focus this term is on the development of the core skills of rugby, those being:

  1. Catch and pass
  2. Tackle
  3. Tackle contest
  4. And ball presentation

Our aim is to enhance each player with the above skills as well as instilling a sense of fair play, sportsmanship and an enjoyment of the game.

Congratulations to all the boys in the rugby program on their attitude and effort to date, we look forward to finishing the term strongly.

Football

The 2012 Football season has started off on a fantastic note with some excellent results across the board in trials against The King’s School and Sydney Boys High School. The new U13’s have been particularly impressive in their first two weeks of winter sport.

A big thanks to the 27 who attended the referee course at the end of April. The boys have been very enthusiastic and willing to referee or assist over the first two weeks of the season under the watchful eye of referees inspector Con Diomis who has been providing plenty of good feedback to all the boys.

The 2nd round of the CIS Football Cup is against the Arden Anglican School and will be played on the Buchanan Oval at 3.30pm on Thursday 7 June.

Congratulations to the following boys who were selected to represent AAGPS in the NSW CIS Secondary Championships. Muhammad Asad (12/KL), James Holland (11/FL), Stephen Hrysanthos (12/ME), Matthew Severino (12/JN), Seung Woo (11/JN). Further congratulations to Matthew Severino who was selected in the NSW CIS squad to compete in the All Schools NSW Championships to be held in June.

Cross Country

The season has started off well over the first 3 weeks of the season with the boys improving their fitness each week.

Morgan McDonald (11/MO) has finished first in each of his three races winning the U16’s age group during the trial round on the 12 May as well as Round 1 and 2 in the Opens age group. Ed Penrose (9/KL) also finished first in the U16’s age group during round 1 of the competition.

We wish the boys all the best as they tackle the hilly Riverview course on Saturday 2 June.

Rowing

On Sunday the 27th May, 31 rowing crews from Newington, PLC, MLC, The King’s School and Redlands competed in the annual Corporate Rowing Regatta known as the Great Autumn Regatta at SIRC.

Crews are comprised of parents, friends and corporate groups who are keen to try out rowing for the first time or to reconnect with the sport if they have rowed beforehand.

Newington’s crews trained for a month leading into the regatta and had great success on the race day. The Newington crew “Shock & Oar” (pictured below) took out the trophy for the A-Final, making it 5 out of 6 years that a Newington crew has won it! “Shock & Oar” was a crew made up of a number of Old Boys, including the Rowing Association President (and current parent) Steve Graham, and was coxed by Jamie Fleming (10/LE).  Other crews achieved success with “G-Force” finishing 3rd in the A-Final, “Blade Runners” winning the C-Final and “Mötley Crew” finishing 2nd in the C-final. “Chicks with Sticks” finished a courageous fourth in the D-Final.

All competitors had a great time and raised funds for the Newington Rowing program. If you are keen to give Corporate Rowing a go in 2013, then please email s.pennington@newington.nsw.edu.au

Thank you to Darcy Pointon (11/JN) and parent Zeljko Bedic for their contributions to this week’s image gallery.
