F1 in Schools Comes to Newington

Over the last week the Stanmore Campus has been a buzz of activity as students have diligently prepared for the F1 in Schools showcase at Newington College. Combining cars, racing, engineering and even a little bit of business acumen, the program has enjoyed considerable success here at our College.

Indeed, building the creativity and innovation capacity in High School students sits as a tenet of the F1 in Schools Challenge. It also sits very comfortably with Newington’s belief that if boys enjoy learning anything is possible.

At the official launch of the 2012 Newington F1 in Schools Program the evidence was in. The boys were loving the demands of the competition, the advanced technology needed to participate and mostly, their chance to share their skills and enthusiasm with people who believe in them. And that is not just their parents and teachers. Sponsors for this year’s program were invited to the launch to hear about the business planning, marketing and collaboration that goes into this structured engineering design project, based on the development of a miniature model Formula One™ racing car.

The following day the five Newington teams, who have been designing, testing and making their  F1 cars (capable of 80km/h), fronted at the track for the first round of competition against other schools from across Sydney. By all accounts, the day was a resounding success and a testament to the hard work and dedication of all the students involved. Our boys relished the opportunity to finally compete at an inter-school level, racing their crafty little cars built so perfectly (see below for a full gallery of both the launch night and the racing event).

While all eyes might have been on the racetrack and the wisps of smoke rising from the start line, the competition is about much more than simply the quickest car to the end of the line. Style, research, business planning and presentation skills are all crucial factors of a competition that judges competitors virtually from Day 1 of the design process. Their ability to solve problems and work as a team to canvas support are critical to the final product, and in this capacity our Newington competitors performed spectacularly.

Special thanks must be given to Bastian Meagher (8/PR), Dion Riotto (8/KL), Zubin Nanavati (11/KL) and Jaicob Dick (11/PR) for their behind the scenes help—the day could not have gone so well without them. The results for the Newington teams competing yesterday were as follows:

The Sydney Schools Shootout had 40 teams playing in both Premier division (1st teams) and Development division (2nd teams) Teams are placed into pools where a round robin takes place with the top two teams progressing through to a finals system. Both Newington teams made it through to the quarter finals where they were both knocked out by St Augustine’s 1st and 2nds teams. ROWING

Attendance and attitude were excellent at the recent October rowing camp which was held in the second week of the holidays at the Newington boatshed. We welcomed several new coaches to the program and they have all settled in well, gaining a good rapport with the boys and setting high standards out on the water.

Over 30 Year 7 boys tried out rowing for the first time and were quick to take up the various skills and routines. The Year 9 Quads showed up in droves and attacked their work with a high level of enthusiasm. The Year 10 Eights showed significant improvement from the beginning to the end of the week. A large number of senior rowers attended the camp and were impressive with their work ethic and professionalism throughout the week. We welcomed several new rowers and they are picking up the technical nuances of rowing very well. We finished the week with a tough Rob Rowland-Smith session on the Saturday. We have commenced a buddy system whereby every Year 7 rower is paired up with a senior rower and this started well on the final day of camp.

***The Rowing Program is expanding in size and is in need of three more coxes for the senior crews. Coxes are responsible for steering and commands in the boat and take on great responsibility for the success of their crew. The position would be a fantastic opportunity for boys in any year group who weigh between 45 and 55kg and who are keen to represent the College in a high profile sport. If your son is willing to take a look at the opportunity, we would welcome an initial discussion. Please contact the Director of Rowing as soon as possible on spennington@newington.nsw.edu.au.***

Imagine a Vibrant Library Hub!

Hello from the new Head of Library Services! My name is Crystal Choi, and I recently joined the Newington College staff and school community (make that very recently—I’m currently in my second week at school!)

To give you a little bit of background about me- I am a qualified primary school teacher and a qualified librarian. I’ve worked in both public and academic libraries and my last role was at the University of Sydney Library, as the Faculty Liaison Librarian supporting the School of Biological Sciences.

I’m really excited about the new library space, which is going up before our very eyes. I imagine that the new library space will be a vibrant and central hub in the School community, which is a busy, user friendly, inviting, exciting and dynamic place where boys and staff love to come, using it as a centre of learning and knowledge and a place to relax.

When you walk through the doors of the library I imagine seeing lots of boys doing lots of different things- reading, writing, studying, plugged into their devices, playing a board game, doing group work or just chilling out with a magazine or book. I hope that it will be a buzzy hive of activity that becomes a real centre for learning.

I’ve already had the pleasure of meeting many staff and students in the school community and I look forward to meeting many more. If you see me around, come and say hi.

Ms Crystal Choi
Head of Library Services

What is your ultimate goal in life?

The Valedictory Message: Our Search for Happiness

It was my great pleasure and privilege to officiate at our recent Valedictory Service where we farewell our graduating Year 12 students.  The theme of my brief homily was “What is your ultimate goal in life?”  I share these words with you, the community of Newington, and address them to myself as well.

On this occasion of graduation day I was very mindful that at that particular time of the year our lads may well be ‘over-cooked’ with information and advice, so I kept things very simple and succinct but hopefully with a spark of challenge as they go out into the world.

I sought to remind them of the wealthy, successful and ambitious young man who met Jesus and asked him, “How can I get eternal life?”  In our language this would be, “How can I really make it in life?  How can I achieve ultimate happiness?”  This young man was young, impulsive, ambitious and talented, like so many of our graduates.  What this young guy was really asking was this—“What must I do to find true happiness?”  He was the Bible’s great consumer, this guy, a real self-starter, self-motivated.  I am sure he would have had an “all-rounder scholarship” had he been enrolled at Newington.  He would, however, never find this true happiness—because Jesus could see that he could not “let go”(Buddhists would agree with Jesus here – he clung so tightly to his worldly possession and material success).  He could not let go his own selfish pursuit of happiness.  He had even kept all the laws of his religion in search of meaning, and when Jesus said,  “there is one thing you lack – you need to let go”  Mark’s Gospel tells us that he was so gutted by what Jesus said that he fell on face on the ground.

How hard it is for the wealthy to enter the kingdom of God, to find ultimate happiness. There is no escaping the fact that we are the wealthy, in relative terms, in the world of today.  Most of us are self-made, self-sufficient, self-reliant and we don’t need God.  And so the hard message is that in order to find true happiness we need to let go – releasing our grip on wealth and our hell bent pursuit of it.  We need to allow our egotism, our self-centredness to be neutralised.  If we look at history’s great humanitarians they have this common feature.  Inspiring people like Dr Martin Luther King, Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Mahatma Ghandi whose names adorn our Chapel’s walls.

I sought to challenge our young graduates to have the courage to become outwardly focused as they go out from this school.  To become open to a whole range of new possibilities, maybe beyond our shores, or maybe being called to our society in this land. To be open to harnessing the energy that is found in God’s Grace, in Christ – to truly become open to becoming agents of change in this world.

I encouraged them to listen to Jesus’ warning that unless we can let go of the egotism and clinging attachment of material success, we will never be truly happy, and we will fall short of what it means to be human.  My last words were those of our Headmaster, given to them at the final assembly, just prior to the Chapel Service, “Will you be the thunder that rolls on through the years?”.

My hope is that some of what I shared with our graduates will have resonance with you in your search for purpose and fulfilment.

Chaplain

Pathways to the Future

Choices after Year 12 – current Year 10 and 11 Boys

With Year 12 having commenced the HSC Exam period and Years 8-11 Exams commencing week 15A (5 November 2012), boys in Years 10-11 should think about organising a meeting with Mr Breden to discuss academic and co-curricular activities during the senior years that will enhance their chances of securing scholarships opportunities offered at universities in Australia and overseas.

For Year 11 Boys, Term 4 is an ideal time to look at possible options for 2014 and developing a plan for 2013 to achieve your post-school goals.

For Year 10 Boys, start to plan to look for opportunities to undertake voluntary Work Experience over the Summer School Holiday period. By doing so will allow you to evaluate whether or not a particular career is the right one for you.

Tax File Number Applications

Boys aged 13 years old or over and still at school are eligible to apply for a Tax File Number (TFN) through the school. Applying for the TFN through the school required less paperwork and is a quicker process. If you are thinking about getting casual work over the Summer School Holidays, you will more than likely require a TFN. Please see Mr Breden to collect TFN information and an application form.

Year 12 – After the HSC Exam period 2012

With the HSC Exam period finishing on the 13 November 2012 and HSC results and ATAR Rank available the 19-20 December 2012, current Year 12 Boys and Parents are invited to contact Mr Breden and make an appointment to assist with any post secondary discussions for 2013 and beyond. Further information regarding scheduling appointments will be available in the next issue of Black & White. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact Mr Breden.

If you would like to make further enquiries or to make an appointment, please contact me on 02 9568 9429 or Email: jbreden@newington.nsw.edu.au. For Boys at school, please drop by the Careers Office located on Level 1, above Prescott House locker area at the back of the Le Couteur Wing (Library).

Mr Jamie Breden
Careers and VET Coordinator

From the School Nurse: Exam Help!

With the HSC underway I thought I would give some practical ideas to help get through the exams.

It’s really important to have a good breakfast.

Try any of the following:

  • scrambled eggs with tomato and avocado on wholemeal toast,
  • a healthy cereal with fruit added like a banana and a sprinkle of almonds. Almonds get an A+ in the nut world!
  • fruit smoothies with blueberries made with low fat milk. Blueberries are also an anti-stress food – good for the whole family!
  • baked beans on toast – there is always a tin at the back of the cupboard
  • poached egg on a wholemeal muffin
  • cheese and tomato toastie on wholegrain.

If you are used to having a tea or coffee then enjoy your usual. Don’t think 2 coffees will be better – the extra caffeine can make you nervous and restless and upset your tummy. Avoid coffee before bed time. Do have water to keep you hydrated and avoid energy drinks. You will get a sugar spike and then a sugar crash – not worth it.

For lunch have a roll, wrap or sandwich with salad, lean meat or tuna. If you have an afternoon exam don’t eat a heavy pasta lunch as this can make you sleepy. Snack on a handful of nuts, fruit (2 pieces a day) and good quality muesli bars. For dinner try salmon with lots of vegies, chicken stir fry with cashews and brown rice or Margaret Fulton’s spiced pork with chickpeas – it’s really tasty and full of protein. Left-overs are an easy lunch for the following day so make enough to last.

What else – get some out door exercise every day, it will help you relax and you will sleep better.

Finally get a good night’s sleep. It really helps your brain to focus.

‘Keep a cool head on the day’ was always my Dad’s advice.

Good times, good friends, good health to you…and the luck of the Irish in all that you do.

Sister Margaret Bates
School Nurse

Cricket Archives reveal 2 early Australian players

From the Archives

The commencement of summer sport provides an opportunity to look at the early days of cricket at Newington.

We know from contemporary accounts that boys have played cricket since the start of the school at Newington House, Silverwater. The ‘green’ was close to the main buildings: it was natural that this was where cricket and other games were played. The senior and junior students were reported to have had their own playing spaces.

Much of the cricket played would have been informal matches organised within the school. However, Newington was soon fielding teams to play not only against other schools but also against local clubs. School opponents included Camden College, a Congregational school in Newtown, St Mark’s at Macquarie Fields and the Calder House School in Redfern. The clubs included Balmain Surrey, the Albert Club (reportedly the premier club of the day), Parramatta and ‘a Sydney Eleven’. Regular GPS competition did not start until 1893.

Matches were irregular. It was reportedly ‘…rather a journey to get to or from Newington early enough to play a two-innings match.’ Parramatta was five miles away by steamer, and Sydney fourteen miles.

An important asset for Newington was Joseph Coates, who taught at the school from 1864 to 1872, returning later as Head Master. A noted member of the ‘2nd Alberts’, he was reportedly a good all-rounder and left-hand bowler. With cricket organised at Newington as a club, he and other Masters could play for the school, as could former students. Two prominent cricketers to emerge from Newington in the 1860s were Edwin ‘Ted’ Evans and Tom Garrett, both of whom subsequently played for Australia.

Illustrated is the Newington team from around 1870, in our earliest cricket image. The photograph was taken from the verandah of Newington House. Several members are wearing Cadet uniform caps. The man in the plaid shirt is probably Joseph Coates.

Manly Jazz Festival

The Stage Band and Jazz Combo were invited to perform at this year’s Manly International Jazz Festival, held during the holidays. Their performances were outstanding and attracted strong crowds and enthusiastic support. Special thanks to Mr Burgett and his expert leadership of the Jazz Combo and to Mr Foxe who assisted the Stage Band performance on the day. Finally, to the boys: Bravo!

Year 10

A reminder that the annual examinations begin on Monday 5 November! It is important that the boys prepare a plan for revision and study in the weeks ahead and then put this into action. Subject teachers and mentors are key support staff for the boys in this process.

During Term 4 a number of leadership initiatives are taking place. These include a mentor supervised leadership program to gain a better understanding of what leadership really means and how it can be carried out. During the final week all boys will be involved in Peer Support Training in preparation for a range of opportunities in leadership during 2013.

Year 11

On Thursday 18 October the “Surviving HSC/IB Evening” will be held in the chapel beginning at 7.00pm. This presentation is for Year 11 boys and their parents. It includes former Newington boys, parents and current staff sharing their experiences about the journey ahead. It will also include a presentation from Mr Breden regarding university entrance procedures and there will be an opportunity for questions.

On Wednesday 14 November we have a presentation from Sam Cawthorn who is a most inspiring young man. A number of our Year 11 boys have already had an opportunity to hear him at the National Leadership Camp in July this year. Their feedback has been incredibly enthusiastic. Sam will focus on the GAP (Global Awareness Project) in his presentation covering social justice, and global awareness of disadvantaged communities in the developing world. Research shows that young people with a global perspective are more engaged and have higher levels of focus and social awareness.

This highly interactive and motivational program will empower students to not take things for granted, encourage better attitudes and gratefulness for their lives and inspire them to make a difference in the wider community.

This is a great opportunity for our boys. You can learn more about Sam at http://www.samcawthorn.com.

Woodbridge Exchange

In recent years, Newington has been involved in a very successful student exchange program with the Woodbridge School in the UK. Boys in Year 9 have the opportunity to spend six weeks in England after Woodbridge boys have spent a similar time here with their families. The boys attend school as normal and get to experience life in another country on a day to day basis. The timing is usually either side of Easter although the exchange program has not been fully confirmed for 2013 as yet. I would be happy to supply information to any boy who feels that it would suit them. It is likely that two boys will be afforded the opportunity so if there are more applicants, boys will undergo a selection process. Such a process would need to take place this term so that families have the opportunity to book air fares etc. Further information about the school can be obtained at http://www.woodbridge.suffolk.sch.uk/.

Pastoral Care 2013

With fourth term now well upon us, we are now preparing the way for our intake of Year 7 students. All class placements have been completed and boys and parents are about to be notified. Experience Year 7 Day will be held on Friday 7 December and boys currently in Year 7 will be given the opportunity to assist their new peers on that day. Ms Colleen Scalone as the permanent Head of Year 7, will be in contact with all families and will be working to put together profiles on each boy to assist their transition into high school. She will be assisted in her role by Mr Troy Stanley. This in no way will diminish the role that they have with the present group of Year 7 boys.

In 2013, the Head of Year 8 role will be shared by Mr Gary Maxwell and Mr John McVicar. Year 9 boys will move to the House system where their Head of House will have responsibility for their overall welfare.

Coxes wanted!

The Rowing Program is expanding in size and is in need of three more coxes for the senior crews. Coxes are responsible for steering and commands in the boat and take on great responsibility for the success of their crew. The position would be a fantastic opportunity for boys in any year group who weigh between 45 and 55kg. and who are keen to represent the College in a high profile sport. If your son is willing to take a look at the opportunity, we would welcome an initial discussion. Please contact the Director of Rowing as soon as possible on spennington@newington.nsw.edu.au.
