Lachlan Elliott debuts with the Sydney Theatre Company

Year 9 student Lachlan Elliott (9/MA)  is making his stage debut with the Sydney Theatre Company in Neil Armfield’s production of The Secret River. Working alongside one of the kings of Australian drama, Lachlan will be playing Willie Thornhill, son of the main character William Thornhill in Andrew Bovell’s version of the Australian classic by Kate Grenville.

But this is not the young thespian’s first time in front of an audience. Lachlan’s first television appearance was in the episode ‘1853’ of the ABC3 series My Place. He has also appeared in a number of television commercials.

The play begins in the slums of early 19th century London and moves to the luscious surrounds of the Hawkesbury River where a man hopes to cast his fortune on unfamiliar territory. The season runs until 9 February 2013.

Staff celebrate Newington’s legacy of dedication

The College Council and former Council Members, the current teaching and support staff, past teaching staff of 20 years’ service and two former Headmasters, gathered last Friday, 25 January in Centenary Hall to commemorate 150 years of tradition and excellence in the delivery of boys’ education at Newington College. In a day of celebration, all staff members were presented with a gift of Sesquicentenary memorabilia and invited to have dinner and drinks. They were thanked for their service to the College over the years.

With a Black & White dress code, staff and their warmly welcomed partners made an elegant gathering of cocktail gowns, tuxedoes and dinner jackets. There were also a number of B & W bow ties, those in military Mess Dress and even Tongan tupenu.

School Counsellor, Mr Stan Comino a staff member of Newington College since 1973 spoke on behalf of the assembly. In a moving speech before dinner he congratulated Newington staff for their dedication and commitment to“our boys” education over the years. “So many staff have made our students feel safe and given them value and empathy and helped carry their burdens. It’s the genuine care that has been apparent to so many boys and parents,” he said.

The dinner was the first out of an events program designed by the Sesquicentenary Committee— a group of Council Members, Old Newingtonians, current parents and staff who have spent six years planning the celebrations for Newington’s Sesquicentenary.

Also this week: The boys took part in the celebrations this week each receiving a special tie, badge and cupcake at the first assembly of the year.  A 150th Anniversary Chapel service will take place at Stanmore Chapel, 9.30am Sunday 3 February.

Assemblies to mark our 150th birthday

For some boys the first day of the academic term was the start of their Newington journey, while others were returning to the College after the Christmas break, but for all it was the start of a very exciting year in the history of their school–Newington’s Sesquicentenary year.

Officially launching the College’s 150th birthday, The Headmaster, Dr David Mulford and the Sesquicentenary Chairman, Mr Rod Bosman (ON ‘78), travelled with members of the Sesquicentenary Committee to Lindfield, Wyvern and Stanmore on our first day of term. A special assembly was held at each to recognise the significance of the year and celebrate all that has been achieved for the thousands of Newington young men who have passed through the College gates over the last 150 years as well as what is yet to come for those at the College today.

Back in classrooms every boy was included in the special moment receiving commemorative gifts from the College including a Newington College cupcake designed especially for the occasion and a dedicatory Newington College tie and pin; mementos of being a current student in 2013.

There was a buzz of excitement across all three campuses as boys enjoyed their gifts and the significance of the occasion sank in. All Newington boys – past and present – will always be a part of the College, but the boys of 2013 will have a special place in Newington’s history and future generations will look back in years to come at the boys who were with us in this special year.

In SMH, 3 January 1863: Tenders for Repairs to Newington

On 3 January 1863, the Sydney Morning Herald and Empire newspapers carried a notice to contractors, seeking tenders ‘…for extensive repairs to Newington House, out-offices, and Church, Newington Estate, Parramatta River, for the committee of the Wesleyan Collegiate School.’ Tenders were sought for excavation, drainage, masonry, bricklaying, carpentry, joinery, shingling and fencing, along with a range of interior works. Tenders were to be submitted to the architect Thomas Rowe, who later designed what is now the Founders Wing at Stanmore.

The once fine mansion was in a state of serious disrepair. Recent tenants had used the kitchen as a piggery and the dining room as a barn, while the surrounding grounds and buildings had been used for salt-making and slaughtering. The lease agreement provided for the first five years’ rent to be applied to restoring and improving the mansion and grounds.

News of the proposed new school soon spread across the Australian colonies. On 17 January both the South Australian Advertiser (‘from our Melbourne Correspondent’) and the Ballarat Star reported that ‘Newington House has been leased to the Wesleyans for a college’, while the Hobart Mercury reported the same thing on 22 January.

It was in Hobart some days later that the Australasian Conference of the Wesleyan Methodist Church gave the final approval, following the decisions in New South Wales in 1862, for the establishment of the new school. Appointed as ‘Principal’ was one of the project’s chief proponents, the Reverend John Allen Manton.

An invitation to celebrate the vision

With the frantic busyness of “start of year” meetings and planning, together with the “brain dead” feeling one has when transitioning back into the work mode after a restful holiday, I thought that was a good idea to simply give the Sesquicentennial Chapel Service a big plug to all parents and friends of Newington community:

Date: Sunday 3 February (just a few days away)
Time: 9.30am
Venue: The Newington College Chapel (Stanmore Campus)

I am sure that you have seen the advertising in News Magazine but I just want to encourage you to come along with your families and enjoy the celebration of 150 years of the strong Christian heritage of our wonderful school. It was the vision of those early Methodist—now known as Uniting Church—visionaries that established the dream of a school that would be welcoming of all peoples and uphold godly values. Such a dream is very much a vibrant part of our present experience and one of the unique characteristics of Newington that sets us apart from other GPS schools in Sydney.

The Reverend Peter Morphew, our Preparatory School Chaplain, will be bringing a very interesting and challenging message. Peter is always entertaining and relevant and his words are well worth hearing. The College Choir will also be there in force together with many past staff, chaplains and old boys.

I look forward to seeing many of you here next Sunday.

Graphic Novel section of new Library springs into action

I’m so excited to be bringing you this article from the incredible new library. As I sit here at my desk, typing away, when I look up, I can see out into the new space, and it looks AMAZING! And judging by the reactions I get, from staff members to parents, to the teams of boys who have walked through the doors in these two days –I’m not alone in already loving the new space and I’m sure you will too when term gets fully underway.

I revel in the spaces that boys and staff now have to work, read, study, write, create and learn in, and I’m like a pig in mud squelching away happily (as the saying goes) each time I walk in.

The library books have all been moved from the old site and are ready to be devoured by eager eyes.

Some great, new features you might like to discover in the library include: the graphic novel section and a revamped magazine collection, where we’ve subscribed to 20 new magazine titles, including Top Gear, Triple J, FourFourTwo (shipped directly from the UK!), Inside Rugby, MacWorld, The Economist and much more!

There’s so much more to discover in the new library, so I invite you all to come and say hello. Library staff are all ready to help you find the information you need to do your assignments, so come on in!

Hannah Chapman joins the Visual Arts Department

There are many changes to teaching staff in 2013 with one of them being the exciting addition of Hannah Chapman to the  the Visual Arts department at Newington College.

Hannah comes to Newington having worked at Queenwood School for Girls. Last year she won the prestigious NSW Teachers Premier COFA Visual Arts Teachers award, and as part of this award she travelled to the Shanghai Biennale.

This year, she will be attending the Venice Biennale to create contemporary art resources for NSW teachers. Hannah is an executive officer of VADEA (Visual Arts and Design Educators Association) and has fulfilled various roles as part of that organisation since its beginning in 2009. She also advises on the Museum of Contemporary Teachers Council and  has worked in curatorial roles at COFA’s Kudos Gallery and Artexpress.

Hannah has a Bachelor of Art Education form COFA, UNSW and will also be the Curator of Newington College’s Concordia Gallery.

F1 Technology team Zipper Effect raise funds for National Finals

During the holidays Zipper Effect, Newington’s junior professional team of F1 technology students has been offering laser engraving on laptops to students over the summer break. F1 in Schools is the largest Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) Competition and involves over nine million students from 17,000 schools in 31 nations.

The engraving service was well-received  by the Newington community with Zipper Effect getting ready for an onslaught of new laptops to engrave as boys settle back into school.

Last year, Zipper Effect passed the regional and state final. This has secured them a place in the National Final held at the Avalon Air Show in late February.

Those wanting their devices engraved with their name and a special Sesquicentenary logo can visit the workshop between 8.00am to 8.30am every morning and during lunch. A cost of $5 is requested with all funds raised going towards accommodation and travel expenses as the team prepares to travel to Melbourne to compete on 25 February.

If there are parents or friends who would like their own devices engraved, please contact Mr Paul Honeywell or any member of  Zipper Effect. We are also contactable via email at zippereffect@newington.nsw.edu.au

Top Tips for parents with boys starting Year 7

Welcome back to a new school year and a special welcome to new parents and boys.

I hope you all have a great 2013.

The clinic is situated between the Chapel and Le Couteur building – follow the sign on the driveway. I am in the clinic Monday to Thursday 8 am–5 pm and until 3.30 pm on Friday. There is also coverage available for Saturday sport in the first aid room near the back gates.

My best advice for parents, especially for those with children entering Year 7 is to encourage your son to get organised, be positive and ensure they get enough sleep!

Be aware that some students have severe food allergies. I ask where possible that boys do not bring peanut butter or Nutella to school. The canteen is not-nut free, but staff can assist with choices.

Students with asthma should always carry their preventer with them. Ventolin inhalers are also available in the clinic and pool centre.

Some of our students are immunosuppressed, so if your child were to develop chicken pox or measles then please contact the school immediately so we can advise our students appropriately.

Of course with so many students some have other conditions, such as diabetes, arthritis, epilepsy, cancer and other chronic conditions. I think it is important to have a conversation with your son letting them know that some boys may not be able to keep up in sport or might have lots of days away from school. It is hoped that all boys will be respectful and inclusive of everyone.

Year 7 and Year 9 will have vaccinations offered on March 7, May 17 and Sept 18.

In 2013 Year 7 will be offered :

  • Hepatitis B vaccination in two doses–only required if they have not received it previously
  • Varicella vaccine – only if they have not had it previously or had chicken pox disease
  • Boostrix (diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough)–This is a single booster dose and is highly recommended
  • HPV is being offered to boys in three doses in Year 7 and Year 9

The clinic has a small supply of spare uniform items in case a piece has been forgotten or gets damaged, which the boys are welcome to borrow. I can also do running repairs to get students through the day!

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions on mbates@newington.nsw.edu.au, direct 9568 9426. mobile 0407 004 738

Rowing

Grafton Tour

In early December, 36 boys from the Newington GPS Rowing Squad travelled to Grafton to compete in the Head of the Clarence Regatta and the Grafton Rowing Club Regatta, followed by a week-long training camp on the Clarence River.

These regattas are attended by the best schools from Queensland, plus Melbourne Grammar School, King’s and Hamilton Boys High from New Zealand. Both regattas were very successful for Newington.

In the Head of the Clarence Regatta, the following crews had wins:

Under 17 VIII, Under 17 Quad Scull 2nd VIII, Schoolboy Double Scull, Under 17 Single Sculls, 2nd IV.

The 1st VIII won their heat in the hotly contested Schoolboy Eight event and then rowed a gutsy final in tough head wind conditions to finish second behind a much larger Nudgee crew.

In the Grafton Rowing Club Regatta, Newington crews had wins in the following events:

Men’s Open Double Scull, Mixed Double Scull, Men’s Novice Four, Men’s Under 16 Scull, 1st VIII, 2nd VIII, Under 17 Double Scull, Men’s Open Single Scull, Under 17 Single Scull.

January Camps

In late January, selection trials for the GPS crews were held over three days including ergometer trials, sculling and seat racing trials at the Nepean River in Penrith. The newly selected crews travelled to the AIS in Canberra for six days for a training camp. Dr Mulford’s previous School, Radford College allowed us access to their boatshed and they were very generous hosts throughout the week. This was a gruelling week as the training was long and hard, however, it has laid some solid foundations for the upcoming racing season in Term 1.

The Year 10 VIII’s were at camp throughout the final week of the holidays, staying at the Newington Boatshed. This has been difficult for some with injuries and illness keeping them out of the boat, however, a good time was had by all.

The Year 8 and 9 Quads have returned from the holidays and posted good improvements in their erg test results, which bodes well for the season ahead. We have had excellent attendance with over 90% of these squads making the effort to come along to the camps.

Tennis

Most of Newington’s top tennis players competed in a comprehensive schedule of tournaments over the Christmas holiday break.

Events ranged from an ITF Junior event in Shenzhen China (Joseph Lui), the Australian National titles in Melbourne (Julian Panagopoulos), to a wide range of tournaments at Gosford, Bendigo, the University of Queensland, Albury, Newcastle, Narrabeen and Manly to name a few.

Damien Minguez and Joel Hannan travelled to the Bolletteri Tennis Academy in Florida ( IMG Academy) for a few weeks for solid training and Blazo Djurovic broke into the top 200 players of the nation with a personal best ranking of 175. Newington now also has five players in the top 1000 in Australia. A great milestone for our boys.

Newington tennis also conducted its selection and training camp for Representative players between January 21 to 24.

USA Basketball Tour

On December 27th 2102, 26 boys, four staff and numerous parents departed for the USA. The tour started in Santa Cruz, California with the group being broken into three squads for the tournament. The 1sts played in the Monte Vista High School tournament and won the competition and the 2nds came runners up in the Watsonville High School tournament. The tour was already off to a stupendous start.

The group then moved into the Bay area in San Francisco for a game against Richmond High–the school from which the movie ‘Coach Carter’ was based on– for another memorable night of great sport. Whilst in San Francisco the group also got the opportunity to see two NBA games amongst other sightseeing activities.

The next stop was Arizona and the boys enjoyed experiencing the generosity and hospitality of the South West. As the tour continued, with more games being played, the boys had an opportunity to attend classes at local high schools for a few days. The tour ended up in Los Angeles where the final games were played and then off to Disneyland, California Park, Universal Studios for the remaining four days of the tour.

For the record the 1sts came back with six wins and four losses and both the 2nds and Development team had four to five records.

New developments

Pastoral Changes: A reminder that our new Deputy Head of Stanmore and Head of Pastoral, Mr Bob Meakin, is supported by Head of Middle Years (Mr Jeff Snare for Years 7 and 8), eight Heads of House (Years 9 to 12), two co-heads of Year 8 (Mr Maxwell and Mr McVicar) and the Head of Year 7 (Ms Scalone who is assisted by Mr Stanley). There is a horizontal system for Years 7 and 8 and a vertical house system for Years 9 to 12. All boys have a dedicated mentor and in addition, boys can seek assistance from our wonderful Chaplains and counsellors who are also part of the pastoral team.

Lockers: I am pleased to announce that all boys have now been allocated lockers. This year we have built two new house pastoral areas for Kelynack and Johnstone on the second floor of War Memorial block. All Year 8, except Metcalfe, now have lockers allocated in House areas. Please make contact with your son’s Head of House or our General Duties Officers, Mr Kelly and Mr Dodson, should you have an enquiry.

Student diary: Please take time to peruse through your son’s 2013 student diary, noting the new college layout on the inside front cover. There is now full access to the College classrooms, ovals and Sports Centre from all usual entry points. I remind all commuters that the Stanmore Road entry is now strictly one-way.

Homework Club and Evening Prep: This will soon commence in the Library. Homework Club offers assistance to boys in English and Maths between 3.30pm–4.45pm on alternate days to their sport training. Boys in Years 11 to 12 are also invited to join. Nominated teaching staff are available for private study sessions on Monday to Thursday from 6.00pm to 7.30pm. If you have further enquiries, please email Assistant to the Headmaster, Mr Paul Bourke on pbourke@newington.nsw.edu.au.

Uniform Changes: The Midford shop is pleased to announce the release of a new tracksuit and PE shirt and shorts for 2013. Please note there will be a phase-in period and our existing sports uniform and tracksuit set is permissible until the end of Term 2 2014. Boys will also be issued in Mentor groups with new identification tags. Please ensure your son securely fastens his two tags to his bags.

As we celebrate our 150th year, I feel privileged to be entrusted with guiding the fortunes of this great campus! ‘Diversity’ is our greatest strength but we must all work hard to ensure that ‘opportunity’ exists for all!

I hope you can join us at the Sesquicentenary Chapel Service this Sunday, 3 February at 9.30 am. All families and friends are most welcome.

I look forward to continuing the journey with all Newington families in 2013. Happy Birthday!
