A Message from the Head of Stanmore

The army has to be an inclusive organisation in which every soldier … is to be able to reach their full potential and is encouraged to do so. Those who think that is it okay to behave in a way that demeans or exploits their colleagues has no place in this army. … Every one of us is responsible for the culture and reputation of our army and the environment in which we work. If you become aware of any individual degrading another, then show moral courage and take a stand against it!
Lt General David Morrison – June 2013

May I start by bringing to your attention the current Chief of Army’s powerful words to his soldiers following the recent sex scandal in our Armed Services. General Morrison made many valid points and if we were to substitute the word ‘army’ for ‘Newington’ the same theme and determination remains here at Stanmore. We can never hope to successfully overcome the racism, the sexism, or any other fear, if we don’t have the courage to take a stand! As General Morrison concludes: The standards you walk past are the standards you accept! Watch it here. This is most definitely worth discussing with your son(s) and our boys will explore this further next term in mentor groups.

Co-curricular success

I am delighted to report that in our 150th year, the College has enjoyed further co-curricular success since our Junior athletic victory in early May. A fortnight ago, our debaters were victorious in the FED Finals with our Senior B and Year 10 teams defeating excellent opponents. Meanwhile, while being narrowly defeated in the Senior A team, Sebastian Rees (11/PR) was selected in the NSW Debating Team. Musically, the Rockfest showcased an amazing array of talent that even ‘The Voice’ would be proud of! Similarly, this week our Intermediate and Senior boys will contest in the Semi Finals of the Impro Australia Theatre-sports Competition. Finally in sport, six boys were chosen for GPS Football representation and eleven Rugby players were selected for GPS representation, including seven in the First XV. Four Cross Country Runners will represent the College at the State carnival! ‘Character’ remains the key ingredient to success in all these fields and I thank the boys, staff and parents for their contributions!

HSC/IB Diligence

I remind all Year 12 students that the July holidays provide an excellent opportunity for all boys to reflect on their progress over the past semester. Please read carefully your teachers’ advice from your recent reports and act upon their instructions in the calm of holidays and the comfort of your home. The library will be open in the third week between 9.00am and 3.00pm should you like assistance with any research tasks or need a different environment to study. Please note the HSC and IB Trial examinations commence next term on Monday 19 August.

Applications for Leave

Please note that all applications for leave from school for one day or more must be sent to myself in writing or by email. The request for leave should contain the dates being requested and the reason, and provide as much notice as possible, to give the necessary time to for the College to consider the request. Ms Moretti, Mr Meakin’s Assistant, will then confirm in writing, whether or not leave has been granted. If a student misses sport, then please forward your explanation to the Sport Administration Manager, Mr Mark Oliphant.

Overseas Tours

This June/July, the College bids farewells to three touring parties. Mr Verco is leading a K-12 NSW Snow Sports team in the inter school ski competition to Thredbo. Meanwhile Mr Madden and Chaplain Bennett will lead our Service Learning trip to an Aboriginal Community in the Daintree region of Far North Queensland. Finally, we wish our senior footballers, Mr Dene, Mr Crook and Mr Verco and every success as they compete in G6 knockout competition in Adelaide. All four groups are incredibly fortunate and I know they will wear our School colours with pride!

Best wishes for the forthcoming holidays!

Container Collection for Tupou College

On Saturday 15 June, 20 Newington students helped load the resources that have kindly been donated to Tupou College by the Newington community.

On an annual basis Newington sends a 20 foot shipping container of donated items to Tupou College to give them access to the everyday things we take for granted and that they cannot afford to purchase.

The cost of the container has again been sponsored by Ken Grover from Gulliver’s Sport Travel and Barry Cotter from Self-Contained.

Our community has donated many invaluable resources over the last three years. We are hoping to enhance the teaching resources and facilities at Tupou College again this year. Resources include textbooks, school furniture, a data projector, laptops, digital cameras, 100 USBs from QANTAS, farming equipment, catering equipment, children’s toys, sporting equipment and rugby boots and 15 microscopes  generously donated by SHORE and The Kings School. A scrum machine has also been jointly donated by Randwick Rugby club and Newington College Rugby Association and will be presented to the Tupou College First XV during their visit next term.

I thank all donors, students and staff for their generous support this year. There is still space in the container – it departs at the end of Week 1, Term 3!

Please email me, Cameron Quince, directly if you have any resources that you wish to donate.

Environmental Sustainability Committee meets Bill Gates

On Tuesday 28 May, members of the Environmental Sustainability Committee from Years 11 and 12 attended a screening of the very popular ABC Current Affiars program Q and A with special guest Mr Bill Gates at the University of New South Wales.

By 1999, the personal fortune of Bill Gates had surpassed $100 billion. He had come to symbolise the success of the IT boom and was lauded for making personal computer use an everyday reality. But perhaps his greatest legacy is not related to his work with Microsoft or in software design. Gates has in recent years been best known as the world’s greatest philanthropist. Since 2001, he has devoted the majority of his time to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and given over $35 billion to help combat many of the most pressing global issues.

Whilst many questions related to his work in business or aid provision in Africa, Sam Wood (11/PR) specifically addressed the world’s environmental needs and how a reduction in our carbon footprint might affect developing nations. The question sparked an interesting discussion about the obligation of the global community on environmental issues and the ramifications of scientific ignorance. Overall, the live recording was a valuable experience for all who attended and gave us a greater insight into the life and work of one of the most important figures of our generation.

Time to get some Inspiration from the Black and White Cookbook

As the Rugby test season gets into full swing, the opportunities to have some friends over to watch the game presents itself. Rather than just send out for a pizza, why not open up the Black & White Cookbook for some ‘dude food’ to share.

Here are some suggestions:

Mini Sausage Rolls (page 94) Always popular and plenty of opportunity to experiment with new flavours. Try using tomato chutney instead of tomato sauce!!

Texas Level 4 Alarm Chili (page 260) The amount of chili in this dish maybe daunting for some, but it can always be toned down. Delicious when served with Southern American Cornbread (page 157), Grand Final Guacamole (page 74) and sour cream.

Chicken Souvlaki (page 231) Very quick and easy to prepare

Malaysian BBQ Spare Ribs (page 243)

Lamb Kofta (page 80) Make meatballs with the mixture and serve with Tsatziki (page 102) yum!

Layered Avocado and Sour Cream Dip (page 76)

Homemade Burgers (page 82) Take simple mince and turn it into a fun and flavoursome meal. Lay all the salad, extras and condiments out on the table and let the hordes build their own burger.

Marinated Chicken Wings (page 46), Sticky Chicken Drumsticks (page 47)

Spiced Chicken Drumsticks (page 69) Boys seem to love anything with a stick or something that can be eaten with the fingers; these three suggestions fit the bill.

Enjoy the holidays – Go the Wallabies!!

3rd Annual Sports Seminar

On Wednesday 5 June Newington College hosted the 3rd Annual Sports Seminar with a keynote address from World Anti-Doping Association President John Fahey.

Newington College’s Strength and Conditioning Manager Nathan Parnham opened the seminar speaking about the College’s philosophy on boys using gym equipment. He explained how the College teaches fundamental movement skills before developing sport specific programs to suit the needs and capacity of each boy. Mr Parnham also talked about the changing culture within gyms and the need for new coaching styles as well as how to better increase the opportunity for all students to utilize the facility in a safe environment.

Nutritionist Susie Burrell was second to address the audience raising some common concerns about the importance of quality nutritional intake. She also began a discussion around supplements and whether they are appropriate for teenagers. Ms Burrell suggested that when using supplements, timing amd quality was the key to success.

Alanna Metlikovec from the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority provided an insiders look into the drug-testing process. Ms Metlikovec presented some interesting facts about the drugs and supplements market including the reality that there are more than 6,000 supplements that are on the market which the ASADA doesn’t support.

The keynote speaker for the evening was President of the World Anti-Doping Association John Fahey. He spoke about why people take drugs and some of the consequences of usage, as well as some of the current challenges that the WADA is facing.

To view John’s presentation please see SPACES.

Special thanks for the success of the night go to Mr Simon Poidevin for organising Mr Fahey’s attendance, Newington College Sportsmaster James Godfrey for encouraging the event, Athlete’s Foot for their generous donations, and Ms. Veronique Lorquet who worked so tirelessly on the evening to ensure it ran smoothly.

History Debaters commence Season with a Winning Start

On Friday 14 June, the Year 10 History Debating competed against SCEGGS Darlinghurst for the first debate of the season. The topic was “The Battle for Australia was a myth”. Newington, being the host team, was affirmative. Alexander Iannuzzi (10/MO) spoke first, outlining the practical and logical reasons why a Japanese invasion of Australia would have been impossible, stating the numerous personal disagreements and lack of coordination in the Japanese high command as the reason. Callum Strachan (10/JN) was second speaker, explaining the Japanese theory of racial superiority over other Asiatic races, arguing an invasion of Australia would have been inconsistent with this policy. Finally Justin Ting (10/JN), as third speaker, summarised these points and gave our last rebuttal before SCEGGS finished off the debate.

The SCEGGS team possessed some very good public speakers and presented a very compelling case. However, the Newington team succeeded in convincing the adjudicator that the Australian government during WWII overemphasised the threat the Japanese posed to Australia and exposed the lack of material evidence of a formal Japanese plan of attack. The debate was closely contested and Newington will derive great confidence from their victory against such a formidable team.

The night before, our Year 11 team (last year’s competition winners) continued their good form by defeating St. Joseph’s College, Hunter’s Hill. Our team successfully negated the premise that “the Elgin Marbles should be returned to Greece.” Overall, a great start from both teams to this year’s History debating competition!

Jean-Luc Gallo (10/MO)

Mid-Winter Entertainment

On the evening of Wednesday 13 June 1866, the boys of Newington College, ‘…assisted by several Gentlemen’, presented a Mid-Winter Entertainment. One of the treasures of the College Archives is a printed program for the event. It is our earliest documentary evidence of the performing arts at the College, although the program describes the event as ‘their usual Mid-Winter Entertainment’, indicating that it had been done before.

The program comprised a series of recitations and dialogues, several songs and duets, and two ‘drawing room scenes’. All eleven recitations and three dialogues were performed by the boys. They included well-known pieces, such as ‘the Burial of Sir John Moore after Corunna’ by Charles Wolfe, recited by William Neill, and ‘Hamlet and the Ghost’ by William Shakespeare, performed by William Andrews and Brier Mills, along with pieces apparently composed for the occasion.

Mr McManis, the Music Master appointed the previous year, performed two solo songs and joined with a student, Alfred Golledge, for Hérold’s ‘Overture to Zampa’ and with Miss Fletcher, the President’s daughter, for ‘The Cure Quadrille’. Joseph Coates, teacher of History and Classics and better known outside the classroom as a first grade cricketer, sang ‘Thou art so near, and yet so far’. There was more music, but the program provides no further details.

The stars of the ‘drawing room scenes’ were Joseph James Fletcher, the President’s son and William Henry Higman, one of the original students from July 1863. Fletcher played Mr Harold Hairy, ‘a hirsute gentleman out of employment’, opposite Higman’s Mr Shav’em-close, ‘Hon. Sec. to Anti-Beard and Moustache Association’, in the untitled first piece. In the second piece, ‘Married by Mistake’, Fletcher was Captain Heavyside, while Higman played both Mrs Smith (opposite Mr Coates’ Mr Smith) and Mrs Annabella Potts.

We are indebted to Mrs Elizabeth Tomlinson for donating the program to the College in 2011.

Support Education through the AIS USA Foundation

The Australian Independent Schools (AIS) USA Foundation was established in 2006 by Newington College, and has grown to include 29 Australian Independent Schools. The Foundation continues to be strongly connected to Newington College as the College assists in the administration of the Foundation and four of the ten current Board members are Old Newingtonians.

The AIS USA Foundation offers alumni, parents and friends, a tax deductible way to financially support educational facilities of affiliated schools in Australia. For those who have a US tax obligation, the Foundation provides a way to make gifts that qualify as a deduction on their US tax return. 100% of the gift donation goes to the school of the donors choice. Approximately $100,000 is gifted to Newington College annually through the AIS USA Foundation.

For those US Old Newingtonians and current parents who lodge American tax returns considering a gift to the AIS USA Foundation, please visit the website www.aisusafoundation.com for more information and ways to support the College.

Uniting for the Common Good – Refugees and Asylum Seekers

At Newington we are very proud of, and we celebrate often, our multicultural life. We also recognise that even though we have been here for a long time there were others here before us. Many of us at Newington belong to families who have come to Australia within the last generation. Although only a few of us would say that the reason our family moved to Australia was to flee an oppressive situation in our homeland we still do know the feeling of coming to a new land with hope in our hearts that this will be a great future for our family.

Refugee Week is upon us (Sunday 16 June to Saturday 22 June this year) and it is a good time to reflect not just on how fortunate we are to live in Australia, but also to spare a thought, and hopefully a prayer, that there are families in other parts of the world who desperately feel the need to flee their own land and seek a better future for their children.

We are hearing heartbreaking stories of desperate and vulnerable people becoming increasingly distressed and isolated while in Australia’s asylum seeker processing systems. We are also seeing children kept in detention, despite the irrefutable knowledge that doing this may cause these children life-long harm. Admittedly this is not an easy issue to resolve, and very much a “political hot potato”, but this surely does not mean we should turn a blind-eye to the plight of those genuine refuges who have made their way to Australia.

Many of us will be challenged to respond to this crisis. In this election year we have seen a degree of fear-inducing rhetoric which demonizes asylum seekers. We need to be suspicious of such agendas as we move closer to the election season.

From our sacred scriptures we hear these words, “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it. 3 Continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering” (Hebrews 13:2 and 3)

We remember that to love God we also love our neighbour. And this reminds us of the ancient call from Deuteronomy 10 17 For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes. 18 He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing. 19 And you are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt.

These are salutary words as we remember refugees and genuine asylum seekers during the next week. May we be given the grace and discernment to sift the many voices that are telling us what to believe and how to act. May we have generous hearts, and open minds, as we to seek out our own response this issue within our own community here in Sydney.

The Market Place opens at 9am and wraps at 4.30pm. Early bird registration fee for one stall is $195, available until 30 August. After 1 September 2013, cost of stall registration will be $210. Each space is approximately 1.5m square.
