Dear Parents and Guardians,
Term 3 is off to a flying start and our boys are back enjoying (I think) their daily routines.
On Wednesday we held our NAIDOC Assembly to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We were privileged to have guest speaker Clarence “CJ” McCarthy-Grogan address the boys. CJ is a Yanyuwa/Garrawa/Kuku-Yalanji man from Darwin and is co-captain of the University of Texas at Arlington men’s wheelchair basketball team. CJ urged the boys to “put yourself out there, doing things you love because that will make you noticed and allow you to become a leader”. Having been a Riverview boy (2011) he stressed to the boys how lucky they were to be at Newington and able to immerse themselves in all that is on offer.
We also heard from the Chris Wild (ON 1991) Indigenous Bursary holders Harrison Marsh (10/LE) and Gage Phillips (12/JN), along with Tallis McEwen (7/JBG) and Laiken Robinson-Cooper (7/JBG). All four boys shared their stories with us: their people, where they came from, their totems and their famous relatives. Voice. Treaty. Truth. Let’s work together for a shared future is the theme of NAIDOC Week 2019. We can learn a lot from this.
On a matter of housekeeping, we have had some near misses in the drop off zone and the crossing this week. The speed limit is 5kmph – please stick to it to ensure the safety of our boys and our staff. Please remain in your vehicle when you drop your son and if he is required to proceed to the courtyard rather than into the school grounds please make sure he walks and doesn’t run after looking left, right and left again. Together we can keep each other safe.
Sport fixtures resume this weekend and I look forward to seeing you there.
