Dear Parents and Guardians,
Our Year 11 and 12 boys are progressing well with their exams, which started last week with Year 12 boys sitting English. In a Newington first, Mr Graham Potter brought his dog Lacey into the College to meet and greet the boys before their exams. Research has found students report significantly less stress and anxiety, and increased happiness and energy, when they spend even short periods with a dog, and we were pleased the boys could have this experience.
Continuing the wellbeing theme, we will have our first ‘Canines of Our College Day’ next Wednesday. Twenty staff members who own well-behaved hounds will bring them to school for the day: dogs will attend classes and be available for as many pats as our students want to give them. (For those who don’t see them as a man’s best friend, we will have designated dog-free areas.)
One of the most satisfying parts of my job is when I receive unsolicited feedback about one of our boys going above and beyond and representing Newington College to the best of his ability. Last weekend Angus Beer (12/ME), our Captain of Athletics, competed in the National Cross Country Championships. Angus was named captain of the NSW team, and competed in the Boys 16/17 Years 5 x 3000m relay and U18s 6km race in a time of 19:52 coming 36th in Australia. He should be congratulated for his achievements and especially for the feedback from the team manager who said, “Angus was an absolute delight to work with, his leadership was outstanding and a guide to all other athletes”. Well done Angus.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all Newington dads a very happy Father’s Day this Sunday 1 September.
