Dear Parents and Guardians,
Sporting success and academic excellence have been celebrated at Newington this week.
On Friday evening, Head of Sport Mr Mark Dickens attended the Combined Independent Schools awards dinner. Finn Wicks (7/PR) and Quinn Mersal (7/JN) were named in the CIS Primary Team of the Year (Rugby). Brandon Freire (ON 2018) and Matur Maluach (ON 2018) received CIS Medallions for their achievements in Basketball, and Jun Sasagawa (ON 2018) for his achievements in Tennis. Our 2018 Captain of Basketball Reed Nottage received the prestigious MJ Punch Award for the most Outstanding Individual CIS Sportsman. This is a wonderful achievement and a great way for Reed, Brandon, Matur and Jun to close this chapter of their sport careers.
On Wednesday at our annual Academic Excellence Assembly, we recognised a group of young men who achieved exceptional academic success in 2018 and acknowledged the energy and commitment that brought each of them to this point. We awarded Academic Colours to 18 boys and first in course to 32 boys. We also celebrated the 18 boys whose major practical works were selected by NESA as exemplars for exhibition and performance. We awarded the Dux of Edmund Webb Boarding House, congratulated our two HSC all-rounders and applauded the 13 boys who received an ATAR or IBDP UAC rank of 99 or above.
Our guest speaker, Theodore Iannuzzi (ON 2013), was Dux of his year with a perfect IBDP mark of 45 and is now studying Medicine. He spoke to the boys about embracing all that Newington has to offer. Theodore referenced fish, butterflies and roosters in his speech. His message was:
- Get involved; if you spend too long feeling like a fish out of water you’ll miss out on wonderful opportunities.
- Find the things that give you butterflies in your stomach and pursue them; if you’re doing what you love you’ll go far.
- Don’t be a rooster; you’re here to learn, so put in effort to make the most of your education.
Please ask your son about his speech.
I congratulate these boys on their success and thank them for the example they have set.
