Dear Parents and Guardians,
This weekend marks the 120th AAGPS Head of the River. As is our custom at Newington we held our Rowers’ and Swimmers’ Send Off Assembly yesterday, where we acknowledged all our boys who have put in many hours of training. The Head of Sport, Head Coaches and Team Captains spoke of ‘grit and determination’ as the boys have endured early morning starts, all weather conditions, exhaustion and pain. The team captains, Alex Nichol and Jason Hartill, did maintain that the success they have experienced this season has made it all worthwhile. Alex took time to thank Mr Richard Roach for the impact he has had on the rowing program this year. We wish all our crews the best of luck for this weekend as they are supported by the Black and White army.
Next Friday is the AAGPS Swimming Championships and our boys are well placed going in, with the teams currently ranked as follows: Junior Swim Team-2nd, Intermediate Swim Team-1st, Senior Swim Team-1st and the AAGPS Open Relay Premiership team-1st. It has been a great season for our swimmers and we wish them all the best for the championships next week.
In the final week of term we will have the Summer Sports Assembly where we will celebrate all that has happened over the Summer season, as well as award Colours. Last weekend the following teams confirmed their premierships:
GPS Champions: 1sts Basketball
AAGPS/CAS Combined Water Polo Competition Champions: 1sts, 2nds, 16As
GPS Undefeated Premiers Water Polo: 2nds
*1sts Tennis – Although undefeated, wash outs meant that they came 2nd in the GPS Competition.
Please note that the weather conditions have delayed completion of the the footbridge works, and it will remain closed until Wednesday 22 March.
