Dear Parents and Guardians,
Tomorrow is International Women’s Day (IWD). The College will hold a special assembly and we have invited Mrs Hannah Chapman to talk to the boys about IWD and her achievements. It is one of several events that will mark IWD at Newington this week, including Mentor group discussions highlighting the achievements of high-profile women and an IWD staff breakfast. On Wednesday, 30 Year 10-12 boys hosted 30 girls from MLC and PLC at an International Women’s Day Forum. It was a great afternoon with impressive speakers and a lively Q&A session.
Tomorrow’s assembly will both celebrate women’s achievements and highlight the challenges we face in achieving true gender equality. The issue is gaining much-needed traction thanks to the courage and conviction of women determined to break down barriers and stereotypes, and for reasons that are both uplifting and heartbreaking.
Westpac’s Kids and Money report in 2016 revealed that girls are given about 25 per cent less pocket money – even though they do more chores than boys. I hope our boys are pulling their weight at home!
The International Women’s Day 2019 theme of #BalanceforBetter is a call to action for driving gender balance across the world. How will you encourage your son to help make a difference?
