Dear Parents and Guardians,
It’s that unforgettable time of year when boys tune their voices for the House Singing Competition, which will be held next Thursday. We have been privy to some magnificent rehearsals during mentor period this week, and it’s fair to say competition will be stronger in 2019. This year, things will step up a bit. Boys will be allowed to wear mufti dress and are expected to promote their house colour. Our Year 11 and 12 boys will fundraise by supplying food at breakfast, recess and lunch, with delicacies including bacon and egg rolls, home-baked cakes, snags and kebabs on sale. All proceeds raised on the day will be divided equally between the eight houses and donated to the charity they support.
On Friday 7 June, we will hold a professional development day for all Newington staff. Boys are not required to attend classes on Friday and there will be no sport on the weekend, giving them a four-day long weekend – and a great opportunity to recharge for the final three weeks of Term 2.
My thanks to the Newington P&F for the second event in the Forging Strong Foundations speaker series. Dr Phillip Tam and Lisa Maltman were exceptional speakers on the topic Technology addiction and sleep on Wednesday evening, and I urge you to put a note in your diary for the next event, which will be held on Thursday 8 August.
This week we are hosting Treehouse Theatre at Newington. Boys have been fortunate to attend their Tree of Life performances. This wonderful organisation offers a mentoring program that provides a platform for young refugees to share their life stories. I invite and encourage parents, friends and members of the wider community to see Tree of Life for themselves by attending the 7.30pm performance on Friday 31 May. Tickets can be purchased here.
There are still so many things planned for the last four weeks of term. We have the Careers Expo next week, and the middle school production Breaker Morant the week after, Year 7 Parent/Teacher interviews and Rockfest all locked in before the end of term.
I hope to see you at sporting fixtures this weekend.
