Dear Parents and Guardians,
Tonight is your opportunity to see some of our most talented musicians perform at our annual Founders Concert, themed Time. It will feature performances by the Newington College Choir, the Drum Line, a Year 12 rock band, the Jazz Combo, the Chamber Strings, the Combined Preparatory Choir, the Stage Band, the Symphonic Winds and the String Quintet. The evening will culminate in a performance of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture by the Symphony Orchestra. Several featured soloists will be among the many highlights of the evening. Founders Concert is the high point of Newington’s musical calendar and this year’s event is shaping up as one not to miss.
Our philosopher in residence, Dr Stephen Law, has had a busy time on campus this week holding a conference for our Year 11 and 12 Philosophy students, presenting The War for Children’s Minds at the Centre for Ethics and leading practical workshops for teachers, where he shared his ideas on teaching critical thinking in the secondary curriculum. No doubt Dr Law has stimulated some interesting discussion about critical thinking and the broader curriculum.
Saturday is Back to Newington Day. It is the biggest day in the Newington calendar with much to see and do, and I hope to see you there. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the parent volunteers and staff who make this day such a success. Attendance by students is compulsory, and dress is full blazer uniform or full Newington sports tracksuit (no hoodies). Our guests are Scots College and I hope you will join me in making them welcome along with all our other guests and neighbours.
I look forward to welcoming you to Newington College on Saturday.
