Dear parents and guardians,
It has been a period of transition at the College, with our Year 12 2020 boys starting their HSC exams on Tuesday and the swearing in of our 2021 Leaders on Wednesday. Good weather allowed us to bring the school together on the Johnson Bank to congratulate our new student leaders and hear from our Senior Prefect Conor Corcoran. A list of all student leaders can be found here (they are also pictured above).
In step with a long-held Newington tradition, all senior leaders and those applying for 2021 Full College Prefect read the Prefect Pledge. In his first speech as Senior Prefect, Conor shared the 2021 Year 12 theme and motto. The theme is Unity, and the motto is Your Voice. His Support. Our Community.
Conor explained that the motto addresses three key concepts that Year 12 will promote during the year. Firstly, Your Voice. There will be a focus on student-driven initiatives by listening to boys’ concerns and acting on issues important to them. ‘Your voice’ acknowledges how each boy’s voice is valued.
Secondly, His Support. Conor explained this focus on mateship and the power of giving a helping hand. He wants to tackle the issue of men’s mental health and break down the barriers surrounding this topic.
And thirdly, Our Community. Conor acknowledged that due to Covid restrictions Newington’s spirit and energy has taken a hit this year and hopes to re-ignite and celebrate it once again. He believes when we come together as one, the power of the Newington community is at its finest.
The thought and careful consideration that all our student leaders put into the theme and motto is to be applauded. We are in very good hands.
I would like to wish our Year 12 IB boys all the very best for their exams, which start next Tuesday 27 October, and urge our Year 12 HSC boys to keep going strong.
Have a great weekend everyone.
