Dear parents and guardians,
On Saturday 13 March Newington College took eight crews to the 124th AAGPS Head of the River regatta. The 2021 season also celebrated Newington’s centenary of the 1st VIII winning the race on their first attempt!
There were great results all round with the 1st VIII finishing 4th in a super-fast race that saw them half a second off 3rd and 1.1 seconds off 2nd place. The race time was a record, with our boys also finishing with a season best.
Our 2nd VIII and 1st IV both had podium finishes – coming in second place behind Riverview and Shore respectively.
I would like to wish our 1st VIII – Charlie Carr, Sam Bristow, Leo Burkitt-Doyle, Alexander Page, Hamish Danks, Harvey Jones, Hugo Hobbs, Hugh Harvey and Cox Ben Dewhurst – the best of luck as they head off to compete in the 2021 Australian Rowing Championships in Tasmania next week.
On Tuesday we will hold our Summer Sports Assembly where we will award Co-curricular Colours, Letters and awards to our Basketball, Cricket, Rowing, Swimming, Tennis and Water Polo teams.
With two weeks of term left, I am aware the boys are getting tired; however, I urge you to help your boys finish the term in the right manner. Reminders again that boys travelling on public transport must wear a mask. Also, when on public transport, or just out in the community, we expect the boys to be on their best behaviour. Generally, our boys do the right thing, and only a few choose not to. We have a very recognisable uniform, and the general public are quick to report unfavourable behaviour.
Please help your boys to be good Newington citizens.
This weekend is the first of the Winter fixtures. I look forward to seeing many of you out and about. Good luck to our Senior Foil and Sabre fencers who are competing this weekend in the first round of the school’s competition.
Enjoy the weekend.
