A Message From Mr Wyatt

Manners Matter

This term at Assemblies we are focusing on manners through a new series called “Manners Matter”. With the assistance of some Year 6 boys we will be using some fictitious characters to assist the boys in developing their manners. The main characters are  Sir Thank You, Dr Excuse Me, Professor Please and Captain Courtesy. Last week we focused on the use of ‘Please’ and this week we addressed ‘Thank you’. We hope that you might begin to see evidence of this at home. We appreciate your support with this initiative.

Literacy Workshops

As part of our commitment to developing the boys’ literacy skills and to assist in meeting their different learning needs, each fortnight we will running Literacy Workshop groups for Stages 2 and 3. These workshops will occur on the alternate week to the Maths Problem Solving groups. During this time the boys will have the opportunity to choose their level of challenge whilst focusing on specific literacy skills in smaller groups. Initially the focus of these workshops will be writing, however this may broaden throughout the year.

English and the Primary Years Programme (PYP)

This week we held a morning and evening Parent Information Session on English and the PYP. The purpose of these sessions was to provide an overview of how we approach English at our school within the PYP learning framework.

It is important to understand that the PYP is simply a framework. In essence, it provides our school with a unified approach to learning and teaching. English (Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar, Talking and Listening) remains an essential area of learning that requires significant time, effort and planning. The PYP acknowledges the importance of all key learning areas (or subjects), however it provides us with a context to explore the connections that exist between these areas of learning. Whilst we focus considerable amounts of time during the week on English (and for that matter Mathematics), our Units of Inquiry provide an opportunity for integrated learning. For example, we make every effort to ensure that the text type that the boys are learning about in Writing has relevance for the current Unit of Inquiry. This allows the boys to use their developing writing skills to communicate their understanding.

At the information sessions we explained our general approach to English teaching which follows a process from Modelled learning to Shared learning to Guided learning and finally to Independent learning.

Modelled learning provides students with a model of how to use English skills. For example, teachers read aloud to students to demonstrate appropriate fluency and expression.

Shared learning experiences generally involve the whole class deconstructing text for the purpose of analysing structure, grammatical features, purpose and themes, and for discussing relevant skills such as comprehension.

Guided learning experiences occur in smaller similar-ability groups and allow students and teachers to discuss the above ideas in further detail within the context of ability-appropriate material..

Independent learning experiences occur as  the students take increased responsibility for their own work.

Faith Matters

Seeing God in Everyday Life

It was business-as-usual for Moses the day he noticed the burning bush, an event that wasn’t uncommon in the hot desert. Except this time the bush kept burning and “when…he turned aside to look, God called to him.” You’ll have some of your greatest Spiritual experiences in the midst of your everyday life – if you’re open to a divine interruption.

Are you so busy working on your ‘to-do list’ that it would take fire from heaven to get your attention? As someone has rightly said: “You can be in the midst of a common moment, only this time the activity is filled with the presence of God. When in the middle of your harried day you notice something unusual…your first reaction might be, ‘I’m too tired to investigate…I’m not going to disrupt my life.’ Yet in that moment you may have the opportunity for a unique encounter with God. When you see the unusual in the midst of the mundane, don’t continue business-as-usual. God may have ordained that moment to be life-changing for you and those around you.”

Book Week Events 2012

As our celebrations for Book Week draw near I would like to provide you with significant details for each event.

Book Fair

We will start our Book Week celebrations off with our annual Book Fair in the library. This year there will be several options for your consideration. As usual, the students will have the opportunity to purchase books for their own personal home library. They will also be able to buy a book from the fair and donate it to our school library or the classroom library.

A percentage of the retail price of each book bought at the fair will return to the school to give us the opportunity to add resources to our growing collection.

Fair details – Tuesday 21 August 2012
Times – 8.00 to 9.30am and 3.00 to 4.30pm

Stubbies World Change Challenge

Each year we participate in donations to the Room to Read organisation. This year we will be participating in the Stubbies World Change Challenge to help build a school library for the kids in Cambodia. We are aiming to raise $100 for this cause. If you have any coins/change in your pockets, purses or wallets and would like to put it to some use then please add it to our bucket. There will be small buckets in classrooms and a larger one at the Book Fair.

Book Character Parade

Our annual parade will occur on the Junior Playground area at 8.30am on Tuesday 21 August 2012. The theme for this year’s Book Week is:

CHAMPIONS READ!

During our library times over the next few weeks we will spend time discussing this theme and considering possibilities for the parade. Already the students have been inquiring into the meaning for ‘champion’ and who might be an example of such a person. While we certainly were able to name sporting champions we also sought out some not-so-famous ones, our unsung champions, such as Fred Hollows. The challenge came when we sought characters from books that could be considered champions. Each time a name was put forward consideration was given as to why the person or character could be considered a champion.

For our parade we invite the students to participate and get into the spirit of the celebration by dressing as a book champion – the staff certainly will!

News from Alumni

Rugby and the ONU

For the first time, the Newington College Rugby Association and The Old Newingtonians’ Union combined forces to jointly host the Rugby Season Launch together with the ONU Annual Lunch/Dinner.

Over 300 members of the Newington family attended this event, providing a perfect way for Old Boys, parents and current boys to get together and celebrate the common bond of Newington and a love of Rugby. The lunch was a wonderful success, attributable to the mammoth effort of Marisa Broome in planning and executing such a huge event.

Guest speakers included Berrick Barnes, Mark Bell, Wycliff Palu and two of Newington’s Rugby greats, Lachlan Turner (ON ’05) and Scott Turner (ON ’90). The panel discussion led by Head of Sports, Mr James Godfrey (ON ’93), was an interesting foray into the running game. Shared experiences and some spilled secrets provided for a thoroughly entertaining and humorous afternoon.

Silver Medal for Newington Olympian James Chapman

After sending the ‘heads up’ SMS message to the full Newington Community to watch the Men’s Coxless Four final at the 2012 Olympics last Saturday night, it was a united school community that willed James Chapman (ON’97) and his crew to give it their all as they pushed the British crew all the way down the beautiful Eton course.

Always a two crew race the Australians battled crosswinds but rowed an extraordinary race to take the Silver. We are so proud of James and will bring you a full Olympic summary in the Spring edition of News.

From the Archives

Newington’s first Olympian was Nigel Chase Barker (pictured below), who attended the College from 1894 to 1901. He was an outstanding athlete while at school, winning the College Cup (now the Warry Cup) as Athletics Champion two years in a row, and many events at GPS, State and Commonwealth schoolboy championships. Three of his trophies are in the College Archives.

Barker was also an outstanding rugby player, playing in the 1st XV four years in a row (our photo shows him in the 1899 team). Having played for the University of Sydney and for New South Wales, he was selected for the 1907 Wallabies tour of the UK but elected to stay in Australia to finish his studies.

It was a rugby injury that prevented Barker from competing in the 1904 Olympics in St Louis. However the following year he became the first Australian to hold a recognised world record in athletics when he ran the 440yds in 48.5 seconds.

A public subscription enabled Barker to compete at the 1906 Olympics in Athens. Representing ‘Australasia’ (New Zealand did not have a separate team at this period) he won Bronze medals in the 100m and 400m races. The 400m was a controversial race; the winning time, by an American who was not a member of the official USA team was five seconds slower than Barker’s times in Australia and Barker was subjected to severe interference during the race.

Match of the round – Round 9

10 Years Football (Legends) v Coogee Prep

On a windy Saturday morning, 4 August, Newington’s U10 Legends soccer team took on Coogee Prep at Heffron park, Maroubra. Last time we met this team we thrashed them so we looked to do it again.

Unfortunately, Heffron park is so big that Coogee had to send one person to tell us we were at the wrong end. We all piled into our cars and drove up the other end, which ate into our warm up time to prepare for the game.

When we finally settled and were prepared, it was time for the game to start. Coogee kicked off the match and we had the ball a few seconds later. Newington and Coogee started with close goals, and halfway through the first half Reuben scored. The match was 1-0 to Newington at half time.

In the second half, it took a while to get through the Coogee defence. Then we realized the Coogee’s defence was strong, and we needed to pass more to get through it. The first goal of the second half was again scored by Reuben. Confidence was growing and when Reuben was fowled close to the goal, he had a chance to make it three. Unfortunately his shot went just wide of the post, but we were still leading the game.

Harry Bell did more tackles after that and then the third goal was scored. Harry then added another two goals as he ran clear and beat the goal keeper to make it 5-0 at the end of the game.

Thank you to Mr Edwards for coaching us, and all the parents that let us travel so long from home. The points were 1 point to Alex Kerr, 2 points to Harry Bell, Jack Lu and Patrick Christensen, and the man of the match was shared by Reuben and Tim Riddell. This means that the Legends are one win away from going through the season undefeated. Great job boys!

Newington Primary Athletics Carnival

Mother nature put on her brilliant best as the chargers from both Lindfield and Wyvern locked horns once again in this now fierce rivalry between houses. The track was fast, the conditions perfect for some records to be set and dreams realized.

You could have been forgiven for thinking that you were watching the Olympic Games as the first of the 800m finals took off. Speed, endurance and utter determination saw Tom Alscher take out the first event of the program, the 9 years 800m. Not to be forgotten were young Flynn Gannon and Xavier Sheahan, the only two competitors from the 8 Years age group. Daniel Nicholas then beat home a very fast finishing James Moore in the 10 years event, winning by only 7/100ths of a second. This was a fitting way to finish this race as Daniel beat James to the Age Champions trophy by a solitary point….Who said these carnivals aren’t fiercely contested??? Matthew Dyster then took out the 11 years event and showed once again his ability to dominate the distance events, before Reed Nottage looked comfortable in taking out the 12 years event despite a late challenge by Andrew Earlam.

By the time the dust had settled on all the 800m events, the stands were a buzz of activity, with war cries and nervous energy. The first of the rotations began and it was incredible to see the stands empty, and the participation high. What better way to soak up the fresh, winter sun!!

So what to make of the other events on the day? They came and went in what seemed like minutes and in the final wash up we had some brilliant performances. Here are a few! In the 8 years Flynn Gannon left all behind him in most field events, showing great poise and precision as he went. The 9 years saw more strong performances from Sage Goh, and Alex Ngatai showed why he is such a formidable force in the front row as he threw the furthest in the shot put.

The 10 years saw Marc Mardini producing an excellent throw of over 19 metres in the Turbo Javelin, with James Moore doing the same in the Discus. The 11 years threw up the first shock result in the long jump as Zachary Goodhand surprised all with a stunning jump of 4.10m to beat more favoured rivals James Karabesinis and Harry Clarke. The 12 years saw Jonathon Lyons using his long limbs to great use as he took out the high jump event, with Carlo Ottavio showcasing his brute strength by taking out the shot put and javelin events.

The 200m events had to be taken on times due to time getting the better of us on the day, but some of those times were quite spectacular. Xavier Sheahan showed why he is one to watch in the 8 years with a stunning run of 32.85 seconds. Tom Alscher (9 years) and Daniel Nicholas (10 years) showed why they were worthy age champions in their age groups with two great performances. And a record was broken in the 11 years, with James Karabesinis winning in a time of 28.81 seconds.

This record was extra special to Jamie, as it was the first time this particular record has been broken in 30 years of competiton! A fantastic effort from a very friendly, and warm hearted competitor who always has a smile on his face and a kind word to say. The 12 years saw a resurgent Simon James come back into the Athletics fold with a closely fought victory.

The final event of the day was the blue ribbon event…..the 100m finals. And with 5 brilliant finals to wet the appetite, it was time to see who would reign supreme. The 8 years saw Jake Goodhand break clear of Stefano Ottavio over the last 10 metres to take out the first of the finals. Sage Goh then proved too strong in the 9 years, running brilliantly over the final 40 metres of his race. Training partner and friend Sebastian Vardarvas then backed up to win the 10 years event.

The 11 years event saw a reversal of the 200m, with Aiden Fisher winning over Jamie Karabesinis in a new record time of 13.64 seconds. This after he had already broken the record in the preliminary round! The pair were deserved joint age champions, and with Harry Clarke finishing 3rd and Lachlan Watson finishing 4th in this event, the relay team that won State last year in the junior category, get a chance to do the same at the senior level. That is most definitely worth the price of entry at IPSHA.

The 12 years event saw the long striding, long limbed Jonathon Lyons streaking away from the field which included age champion Oliver Sheldrick. Lyons was adjudged runner up age champion but as we have seen at the Olympics just recently, height can be an advantage in the sprint events……

So with the last piece of rubbish cleared and the used programs drifting in the breeze, we had a winner. It may have come a few days after the event and may have involved some major calculations, but Kingswood were the deserved champions, just ahead of close rivals Rydal, and the strong team of Coates. Well done to all boys involved, and a special thank you to all the teachers who officiated brilliantly on the day. Until next year!!!

Junior Primary Athletics Carnival

The Junior Primary Athletics Carnival has been rescheduled to Wednesday 12 September and is being held at Old Boys field at the Stanmore campus (200 Stanmore Rd, Stanmore). This carnival is a great chance for the JP boys to be involved in their first Inter House competition at the school and is completed in the best of spirits.

Boys will be involved in shot put, vortex and javelin throwing, sprints and relays as well as a sack race that is sure to test the strength and balance of a lot of boys. The Carnival commences at 10am and will run through until about 1pm. The boys will move around in their year groups from station to station. Looking forward to seeing you all there!

The advertised, Baked Potato $4.00 with various sauces (Bolognaise, Sweet Chili & Sour Cream or Shredded Ham & Cheese) doesn’t rate against a Snag in a Bun – but it is still available as well as the Baked Bean Jaffle $3.00.

Nachos and Spaghetti Bolognaise are still available ($4.00)– with a huge thank you to Tim Gorman from East Lindfield’s ‘Butcher Delight’ who supplies the minced beef and sausages for the boys’ lunches. Spaghetti Bolognaise is available every day but Nachos, Tuesdays only.

We’re still calling out for more volunteers to help in the Tuck Shop…only 3 hours once a term would be great.

Theme Day 2012

On Monday 6 August, Years 1 and 2 travelled back in time for an olden days Theme Day. Boys were given a taste of what school would have been like and came to school dressed in an amazing array of period costumes. We began the day with some rigorous exercises, followed by some times table rote learning and handwriting on our slates using chalk. At recess, boys discovered the joys of marbles and hopscotch and enjoyed themselves thoroughly. Strictness was also a feature of the day and some boys experienced what the cane might have been like. This seemed to please some of our parents considerably. The day was a great success and was a fantastic stimulus for our Unit of Inquiry on Where we are in Place and Time. The students have formed a deeper understanding of how school has changed over the years.
