Camp Australia – After School Care

Newington College Lindfield After School Care is run by Camp Australia. It offers After School Care from 3.00 – 6.00pm, for students from Kindergarten to Year 6.  Afternoon Tea is provided consisting of fruit and healthy snacks.  During the recent Olympic Games we held our very own Mini Olympics where the boys represented a country and competed in a variety of Olympic sports.  The boys were given the opportunity to meet Mr Paul Fletcher our local member who opened our Olympics.  We also love playing Uno, building with Lego and making exciting art works.  The boys are also encouraged to complete home readers and homework time is allocated.

Faith Matters

Blessed are the peacemakers. (Matthew 5:9)

When you walk into a scene of conflict you have two options; you can be a troublemaker or a peacemaker; you can add to the stress or bring a solution. Zig Ziglar tells of a little bloke who was confronted by three bullies, any one of whom could have flattened him. And clearly, that’s what they had in mind. But the little bloke was very bright. He backed away, drew a line in the dirt, backed up a few more steps, looked into the eyes of the biggest of the three and said, “Now, you just step across that line!” The big bully did. At that moment the little bloke grinned and said, “Good, now we’re both on the same side!”

Peacemakers look for common ground, and try to get everyone onto it. Their goal is to find a win-win situation. Barnabas, whose name means “Son of Encouragement,” stood up for the newly converted Saul of Tarsus when he was ‘persona-non-grata’ to the leaders of the church in Jerusalem. And given Saul’s track record, who could blame them? But Barnabas wasn’t looking at Saul’s troubled past, he was thinking about his potential. In essence he told the apostles, “If you can harness and direct this horse, you win the race.” And he proved right. Saul the persecutor became Paul the apostle! But Barnabas had to put his credibility on the line. Peacemaking means taking a risk on people, judging them by their best moments and qualities rather than their worst.

Here’s the bottom line; peacemakers are big picture thinkers; they’re governed by grace, not petty opinion or temporary conditions. So, are you ready to be a peacemaker?

School Chaplain

A Message from Mr Wyatt

NAPLAN

This week the Year 3 and 5 NAPLAN results were sent home. We have done some initial analysis of the data and on the whole it is very encouraging and reflective of the high standard of learning and teaching at Lindfield. One very pleasing result is the higher Spelling results this year which is encouraging given the sustained professional development focus in this area throughout the year.

The NAPLAN tests and associated data are extremely useful as a diagnostic assessment tool that can be used to analyse individual growth and whole school learning trends. In the coming weeks we will complete a more detailed analysis of the data including a comparison with other assessment tools and strategies that we use throughout the year. This analysis will provide a helpful lens for the staff as we evaluate the quality and effectiveness of our current teaching and learning programs.

It is worth remembering that the data in your son’s NAPLAN results reflects his performance in one test on one day and it is now 4 months old. Each of the boys has grown considerably in their learning since the tests were conducted and we have measured this growth through other assessment tools. If you would like to discuss your son’s NAPLAN results in more detail please contact his class teacher to organise an appointment.

Newington Spaces

Newington Spaces has now been live and active for over a week. Whilst the take-up has been slow, I have received lots of positive feedback about the accessibility and informative nature of the site. I strongly encourage all parents to take the time (it doesn’t take long) to register their accounts by following the instructions below.

We hope to use Newington Spaces to provide up to date information. One example of this will be the School Calendar. Whilst we will send home a paper copy during the holidays, a more up to date version will always be available on Newington Spaces.

To access Newington Spaces you’ll first need to activate your personal login. Visit https://mylogin.newington.nsw.edu.au and enter the email address the College has on file for you – the system will email you a link to choose a password and activate your account. Because you’ll be logging in as an individual with distinct access rights, if the College lists the same email for multiple members of your household please contact the Lindfield office so that we can sort that out. Once activated, login at http://spaces.newington.nsw.edu.au to begin. If you require support with this process please contact the School Office.

Manners Matter

This term at Assemblies we are focusing on manners through an ongoing series called “Manners Matter”. With the assistance of some Year 6 boys we are using fictitious characters to assist the boys in developing their manners. The characters have been Sir Thank You, Dr Excuse Me, Professor Please and Captain Courtesy. Over the last two weeks we have focused on the students demonstrating sportsmanship in the way they play together. We hope that you might begin to see evidence of these manners at home. We appreciate your support with this initiative.

On behalf of the staff I would like to thank all families for their support during a very busy and positive Term 3. To complement the dynamic learning which has taken place in the classrooms, we have seen the boys engage actively in the co-curricular life of the Prep School, involve themselves in the many Clubs on offer at Lindfield, and participate in a number of important school-wide events.

Thank you

May I take this opportunity to wish you all an enjoyable and relaxing break, and trust you are able to have an especially rewarding time with your son(s).

A reminder that Term 3 concludes for the boys at the normal time on Thursday 20 September. School resumes for Term 4 at 8.30am on Monday 8 October, 2012.

Tuckshop News

Spring holidays, yay! Here’s hoping everyone has a good rest, fun, sunny days and lots of laughs.

A huge ‘thank you’ to all the volunteers who have helped out in the Tuck Shop – it isn’t fun without you! More volunteers would be great if others have any spare days.

The boys seem to have enjoyed some of the new meal ideas (but not the baked potatoes!) so Term 4’s menu will have a few changes.  Beef (sausage) in a Blanket, Pasta Bolognaise & Nachos will be continued and can be ordered any day.

Boxed Salads will reappear to challenge some and I’m going to give myself a challenge by adding Sushi on Tuesdays! Look out for the new menu…

Jelly Joys are no longer available – their wrappers became a litter problem in the school grounds – but don’t forget frozen items will be available on hot days such as Quelch sticks, Calippo ices, frozen yoghurt and frozen orange quarters.

Newington v Redlands – AFL All Schools Competition

Newington had their best start of the season on a cool Friday night at Macquarie University fields. Nolan punched the ball straight to Luca from the ball up with Luca belting the ball downfield for our first goal within 20 seconds. We relaxed a little after this, letting Redlands score a few easy goals. When the siren went for quarter time it was 19-6, Redlands way.

We started the second quarter a man down as James Moore went off feeling dizzy. Simon James kicked a great early goal and so did Alessandro. Everybody made great tackles and there was some fabulous passing from Luca and Julian. When the siren went for half time we had beaten Redlands in a quarter and were playing extremely well.

Despite a fight that broke out between Luca and one of the Redlands boys, we played really well in the third and fourth quarters, especially in the backs. We limited the opposition’s time on the ball due to great marking and despite going down on the scoreboard, we knew we had put in a great performance. The end score was 20-40, Redland’s way.

Thank you so much to Woody for coaching us for the six games we played and thank you to all our parents that drove us and supported us at every game.

JP Athletics Carnival

Over 100 years of history greets you as you walk through the big iron gates of 200 Stanmore Street, Stanmore. The Rugby fields where many glorious victories have taken place, and of course Old Boys Oval, where the young athletes of tomorrow first take to the stage!

A delightful Spring morning greeted the many hoards from both Lindfield and Wyvern. Three stations were set up, testing the strength, speed and technical ability of the boys. At the Javelin station there was Eddie Timpson starting off in style with a throw that may have beaten the warm up throw of a cowering PE teacher. This was followed up by Jack Middleton, Aston Bloom, Zac Steinwede and Logan Ford. The Kingswood and Rydal boys were certainly making their presence felt amongst the masses from Wyvern.

During the Long Jump (ie Sack Races) there was incredible bounding from Jamie Kerr and Max Tian. Jacob Lauer was doing his best impression of a rabbit too as he bounded up and down the track. And who could forget the exploits of young Harrison Stuart and little Nishantha Abbey as they tore up the track with great speed and precision.

After the last discus was thrown, the last relay run and the last sack tucked back into the crate in which it came, the boys from Lindfield looked tired, looked happy and looked utterly satisfied with their efforts on what was for some, their first experience at the big time! It only goes up from here, so look out for 2013!

CIS Athletics Carnval

The final Athletics Carnival of the year saw two Lindfield boys battling it out against the best the Combined Independent Schools has to offer in NSW. Josh Bowd and Julian Kwok took centre stage and did the North Shore extremely proud with two impressive performances.

Julian was first to compete in the 12 years long jump and despite his nerves, the young flyer managed a very impressive 12th overall with a leap of 4.38m. Considering he has had limited training, and that his personal best leading into the first Invitational Carnival in August was 3.95m, it has been a meteoric rise for the well liked Lindfieldian.

Josh on the other hand was not dealing with nerves, but instead battling an ankle injury that almost saw him withdraw from the event entirely. Instead he competed through the pain and finished a very respectable 4th overall in the 12 years Discus and with a throw of 32.65m, just outside his season’s best. Although disappointed at missing his place at State, he can be proud of his heroics in just being able to compete after his injury. Well done to both boys!

Inter House Tennis Championships

Stanmore Park was the venue for the 10th Annual Inter House Newington Tennis Open for 2012. Six Lindfield boys put their best foot forward, eager to take the title that was last won by Greg Bradford from Lindfield in 2010. Allen Chen, Keaghan Davey-Webb, Tom and Harry Bell, Aston Bloom and Harry Quinn had been seeded in separate draws and were all looking to progress to the Quarter Finals in what was a glorious Saturday morning in the Inner West.

The early progress was being made by young Aston Bloom, who despite being the youngest in the draw, was looking the most relaxed and played with a fluency and consistency far exceeding his years. Harry Quinn was also impressive, with his serve a major highlight early on.

The Bell brothers were there usual dogged selves, giving away nothing and competing with distinction and flair. The nice guy of the Open, Allen Chen, was his usual consistent best and Keaghan Davey-Webb struggled on serve, but showed groundstrokes at times that would have made a certain Roger Federer proud.

The round matches ended in a flurry, and once the dust had settled it was the pair of Bloom and Quinn who progressed to the Quarter Finals. Aston drew the top seed in his match, and Harry was left with the second top seed.

Aston was precise, he was powerful and he was committed, and despite taking the first game off Hunter Karam, he ultimately conceded the match 3-1. But with another four years of this competition still to be notched up, I dare say we will be seeing this young lad’s name on the trophy very soon.

Harry was also precise, powerful and committed. The end result in his Quarter Final was a 2-0 victory that saw him progress to the final 4.  Like his brother last year, Harry was looking good. The Semi Final played out exactly the same as the Quarter Final with Harry racing to a 2-0 lead. Unfortunately his opponent was very good at deflecting the powerful shots Harry was producing and eventually the deficit was relinquished by Harry and when the hooter went the scores were level at 2-2. As a result of Liam Nikos being placed higher on the draw, he progressed through to the final. Despite his disappointment, Harry was pleased with how far he had come and looked forward to the challenge next year.

QUAD Carnival

A beautifully warm spring morning greeted the bleary eyed athletes as they poured onto the bus bound for Maroubra. And despite getting lost several times on the bus ride there, spirits and expectations were high ahead of some first timers into the QUAD realm.

As we pulled up to the immaculately laid track, the excitement could not be contained as the young chargers warmed up ahead of their events. The field events started the carnival and young Harry Bell started off in style, finishing 2nd in his long jump event with a jump of 3.72m. This great result was followed up by Oliver Dwyer and James Moore in the Shot Put and Discus respectively, as they threw themselves into 2nd place also. Harry Quinn and Luca Russo then showed their class in their long jump and discus events, with Harry finishing 2nd and Luca 3rd.

The roar of the crowd began to take full voice as the first of the 6 years 50m races took to the track. And although they did not finish in the top three, the likes of Max Tian, William Fisher, Jamie Kerr, Freddie Bourne, Rishaad Wildie and Harry Forsyth will be a great force in years to come.

In the 7 years Newington unearthed a superstar, with Harry Stuart winning both his 50m event and also his 100m event. The latter was in a time of 14.68 sec, which would have had him winning the 11 years C race!!! Incredible effort from the young lad! Lachlan Hull also found himself in 2nd place in his heat with a strong finish.

The 8 years age group saw Eddie Timpson again showing his versatility, with a 2nd place in both the 100m and 200m events. Nathan Ma looked terrific in his 200m event as he took out 3rd place, and Aston Bloom was his intensified best as he finished just behind Eddie in his 100m event. Zachary Steinwede was very competitive in all his races and Angus Ashworth is an athlete to look out for in the coming years with his powerful stride and arm action.

The 9 years found the going a little tougher as the depth of both Coogee and Mosman started to show. Alex Ngatai and Julian Potkonjak tried valiantly in their respective events, while Brady Jones, Kalen James and Hamish Danks showed great technique and fighting spirit in theirs.

The 10 years age group were touted as the team to beat with their 4 IPSHA representatives in tow. And they did not disappoint! Oliver Dwyer started the 10’s in fine style, running a very fast 14.53 sec in the 100m finishing 1st. This run was backed up by Harry Bell, Jack Dobson and Daniel Nicholas. The latter finished 2nd in a very tightly contested race! Harry Bell and James Moore then combined to finish 2nd and 3rd in their 800m event, showing great speed endurance and tactical running.

The 11 years age group proved an unexpected gold mine with all divisions succeeding. Hugh Holm ran strongly in his 100m event, with Luca Russo and Harry Quinn showing why theirs is a rivalry to watch in the next year. But it was young Haydon Ashley who really delivered on the day, finishing 1st and 2nd in his 100m and 200m heats before finishing 3rd in the 1500m event. We wish him a speedy recovery as well, as he battles with an infection in hospital at the present time.

The relays were next and the 6 years got us off to a great start, finishing equal 3rd, which was equalled by the 7’s and then the 8’s. The 9’s just missed out by the barest of margins before the 10’s took out 2nd place. The 11’s rounded off the successful track events with a 3rd in their relay also.

The final event of the day was the Tug-o-War and although Newington was without their Year 6 competitors, they were not about to give up without a fight. Early losses to Pittwater House (eventual winners) and Mosman Prep set up a competition against hosts Coogee. And despite their entire team being in year 6, the team from Newington (comprising of 7 year 5 boys and 1 year 3 boy) held their own. Captain courageous Luca Russo was single-handedly keeping Newington in the contest, but eventually Coogee wore the Lindfield boys down and they were defeated. But they were extremely valiant in defeat! Thank you so much to all the parents who came out to watch the stars of the future.

The 70 Club Lunch – 4 September 2012

Spring was in the air and the magnificent weather could not be faulted. It was just made to order!

Morning tea was held on the steps of Centenary Hall and guests gazed out onto the Johnson with students rushing by to get to their next class and the building works in full swing. It is safe to say Newington was seen at its best; alive and buzzing.

A wonderful attendance as 115 guests, which included special guests from the Laying of the Foundation Stones Ceremony that preceded the luncheon, moved into Centenary Hall.

The Annual General Meeting was also held. Congratulations to The 70 Club Committee:

Class of 1982 – 30 Year Reunion

The first day of Spring 2012…

…what a day to have a reunion! The crowd that lined the banks of the Johnson was incredible; there was not a space left of green grass. The crowd cheered the 1st XV, with a heart stopping final 3 minutes as the Black & White’s defence was put to the test resulting in a win against Shore 27 – 24. This placed the 1st XV in the Championship round.

Warwick ‘Gibo’ Gibson (ON ’82) and Rob Tredinnick (ON ’82) led the tour of the College. As current teachers they were able to provide their peer year with an insight to their day to day lives.

Moving into Prescott Hall for the evening, Chaplain Michael Bennett (ON ’87) recognised some faces from the past and led them in grace. The evening was attended by 70 guests; some who had travelled from interstate. The reunion provided the chance for many of the Old Boys to reconnect with their long lost peers.

A special thank you to Bruce Millar (ON ’82) and James Fisher (ON ’82) for coordinating the event. A fantastic day was had by all.

From the Archives

The exhibition ‘149: Watching Time Take Form’ (reported elsewhere in this issue) featured both works inspired by material from the College’s Archives collection and collection objects themselves.

One of Aniss Fakhri’s works, Kaleidoscope, used images from one of the gems of our collection, a set of astronomical lantern slides dating from 1866. The lantern slides belonged to Rev Dr James Egan Moulton, who served as Newington’s first ‘Head Master’ in 1863 and as President from 1893 to 1900. He served as a Wesleyan missionary in Tonga from 1865 to 1888, establishing Tupou College under the patronage of the King. We know that he taught astronomy while in Tonga and it is almost certain that he used these lantern slides for this purpose.

24 of the original 38 slides have survived, along with their sturdy box and an accompanying booklet. The slides are hand painted and each is set in a mahogany panel. Subjects include the planets, the phases of the moon, comets, constellations, eclipses, the tides, and the Ptolemaic, Pythagorean and Newtonian Systems.

The slides, along with a slide show of their digitised images, are on display in the Chaplain Peter Swain Exhibition Room, on the top floor of the Founders Wing and open from 2-4pm each weekday and at other times by arrangement.

An Update on Proposed Funding Cuts to NSW Private Education

I have been very appreciative of all the support that parents have given in writing to their local Liberal MPs and Ministers, voicing concern regarding the proposed changes to private education funding for 2013.

As you may be aware, in light of widespread outrage the Education Minister has since been forced to water down the original policy. However, the implications remain serious.

The State Government now intends to freeze private education funding at current levels for the next four years. Although we are undoubtedly relieved that the full brunt of the policy changes have been restricted, as a community we must remain wary of the intentions of this Government and make sure they understand our position on this.

Given your already considerable support for all children being educated in NSW, by having your child attend a fee paying school, you may wish to make clear to the State Government your views on this decision. The Parents Council are advocating a number of methods:

  • Seeking meetings with their local state member.
  • Emailing and posting letters to the PremierMinister Piccoli and local members.
  • Voicing concern on talkback radio and through social media.

To quote from Dr Geoff Newcombe, Executive Director of the Association of Independent Schools of NSW, “It is very disturbing that a government would consider an overall funding cut of 8% to non-government schools (6%-53% for individual independent schools) at a time when there is a national focus on additional investment in education to lift teacher quality and improve student outcomes.”

I do remain concerned about the reduction of funding to all forms and systems of education. Cuts to state, private and TAFE education in NSW is extremely short sighted.

I will keep you informed of further communications and decisions for our community.

Yours sincerely
Dr David Mulford

Year 6 Camp to Canberra

On Wednesday 5 September, Year 6 students from the Lindfield and Wyvern campuses departed for their annual excursion to our nation’s captial. The purpose of the trip was to reinforce and enhance our inquiry into governmental systems and put learning into action. Visits to both Parliament Houses as well as to the Electoral Education Centre were central to the excursion. The boys were able to ask relevant and pertinent questions of the staff and gained a greater understanding of our system of government, its people and purpose.

During the three days, the boys explored QUESTACON, the Australian Institute of Sport, the CSIRO, The Australian War Memorial and the National Museum. As has been our tradition, we held a ceremony and lay a wreath at the memorial at the front of the Australian War Memorial to honour those who fought for our sakes.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit their National Capital as part of their civics and citzenship education. To assist you (the parent) in meeting the cost of the excursion to Australian Government is contributing funding of $20 per eligible student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) programme toward the travel expenses incurred. This contribution will be paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
