A Message from Mr Holden

Today marks the start of Reconciliation Week. At Wyvern we recognise that reconciliation is an essential process for all Australians. At the core of reconciliation are the relationships between the broader Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We believe we have an important role to play in helping our students to learn more about our shared histories, cultures and achievements. We need to understand how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

This year’s theme for National Reconciliation Week is, ‘More Than a Word. Reconciliation Takes Action’. Over the next week teachers will lead some age-appropriate learning sessions to assist our boys to further understand reconciliation and to deepen our understanding of indigenous perspectives. As a longer-term goal Wyvern has developed its own Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) which sets out practical steps we will take to foster a higher level of knowledge and pride in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and contributions. Please click here to see Wyvern’s RAP.

As part of our actions in Reconciliation Week, we are proud to announce that our Year 6 sporting teams will wear an indigenous jersey in Round 6 of their sporting fixtures. The jersey has been designed by a local Aboriginal artist, Adam Hill. For a further explanation of the design, and its relevance to Newington, click here
