Book Week
The celebration of books during the annual Children’s Book Council of Australia Book Week is a highlight on the Wyvern calendar each year. This year our celebration will take place from Monday August 25th until Friday August 29th.
On Tuesday August 26th, Years 3 & 4 will be involved in an innovative and energetic performance from one of Australia’s most popular children’s poets, Steven Herrick. They will have the opportunity to appreciate the sound and humour of modern poetry and will recognise that this type of poetry is accessible, entertaining and relevant to their lives
On Thursday August 28th, Years 5 & 6 will participate in a session delivered by John Heffernan, an author who has written about thirty books for a range of audiences from early readers to young adults spanning a range of genres including realistic fiction, fantasy and futuristic stories. John will be discussing his latest book entitled Naveed, which is part of a new series, written by excellent Australian authors, called Through My Eyes. This series invites readers to enter the fragile worlds of children living in contemporary war zones. John’s book Naveed tells the story of one of these children who is desperately trying to survive as his family and way of life are being destroyed by war. This book will inspire, challenge and engage young readers whilst creating greater cross cultural understanding and informed empathy.
On Friday August 29th in Wyvern Library, Years K-2 will be entertained with a performance of Puppet Tricksters from Dennis Murphy, a master puppeteer. The Tricksters, who outmanoeuvre bullies and survive on their wits are much loved characters that have appeared in many cultures around the world. Dennis introduces two main puppets; Pulcinella, the Southern Italian puppet and his descendants as well as Arlecchino, Northern Italy’s trickster. The performance will also look at the ‘Trick Marionette’ tradition. Through this experience, the students will identify and explore the morals of stories from different cultures.
