Newington Chess Tournament

On the 6th March 2014 eight boys from Wyvern attended the highly anticipated 7 round Swiss Chess Tournament. These highly skilled boys included Benjamin Nguyen, Calum Boland, Adrian Lo, Kieran Casey, Kim Lam, Fallon Fotaras, Hamish Thompson, Christopher Mina and Jaxon Jarvis. This event took place at the Concordia Gallery, Newington College.

Facing off against nearly one hundred other students from the city area. Some of these schools which provided a challenge for the confident Newingtonians included Carlton Public, Summer Hill Public, Abbottsford Public and more schools. These boys flew through the tournament claiming win after win.

Four rounds in the morning half of the competition found the boys in the lead of Summer Hill public by half a point. Praises go to Adrian Lo for his undefeated record until this point. Benjamin Nguyen and Calum Boland provided valuable points and Fallon and Hamish did extremely well.

The boys enjoyed a quick play over on the Old Boys Oval. A soccer ball to the face rendered Benjamin with insight into the following rounds. The boys returned to Concordia sweating and licking lollipops of various colours.

Post lunch the boys were plagued with loses however credit to Benjamin and Kim Lam for going through the second half with a series of wins. Jaxon Jarvis came back from a few loses in the second half winning multiple times.

Unfortunately for Adrian, he was pitted against some experienced players in his last two games. This resulted in two loses for Adrian. One of these last two players was the champion who knocked out Adrian after a well fought battle.

In the end none of the eight boys made the top five, however, they fought for third place. This will send them to the semi finals.
