Year 5 Bathurst Excursion
On Wednesday 22 August, all 5 classes from Wyvern and Lindfield. began the lengthy, but exciting coach journey to Bathurst, NSW. We were off to study some important landmarks from the Australian gold rushes of the 19th Century and take in some other interesting sites along the way. Our first journey was broken up by a visit to Echo Point to view The Three Sisters and an exhilarating walk through the Jenolan Caves. We were staying at the Bathurst Sheep and Cattle Drome and celebrated our arrival with a bushdance in the exhibition hall.
The following day was action-packed and began with a show by the farmers and shearers at the sheep and cattle drome. During the afternoon we managed to find time to take a tour around the historic town of Hill End, climb up a disused mine shaft and pan, with varying success, for alluvial gold in a creek!
Our trip was not over, however, and we still had time to visit the Bathurst Goldfields museum on Friday morning. Here we were able to see a huge range of artefacts from the era, discover what it was like to work, rest and play like a 19th Century miner and buy some last minute souvenirs before reboarding our coaches for the long trip back to school.
It was a wonderful trip and all of the guides and teachers were impressed with the way that boys learnt, listened and represented their college.
