The 2024 Newington College 1st and 2nd XV teams were presented with their jerseys this week by members of the 13A team – a tradition our players cherish.

This jersey was first worn by the 1st XV in 1922. The origins of the jersey stem from a decision to redesign the original black and white striped jersey. The ONU, who were great supporters of Newington Rugby, took the lead in this, designing and ordering for every member of the team our now-renowned white jerseys featuring the black wyvern.

The first game where the team wore these new jerseys was the opening match in the 1922 GPS competition on 8 July. Played against St Joseph’s College and held on Sydney University’s Oval, this was a match played before the main NSW v New Zealand game. For the record, Newington won 11 points to 6.

Best of luck to 1st and 2nd XV in their first competitive fixtures of the season at home to St Joseph's College this weekend.
