A Message from Mr Holden

It is hard to imagine that we are already at the half way point of the term which, as usual, has been action packed. This has especially been the case over the last few days with boys participating in exciting Science week activities organised by Ms Bosch (STEM teacher) as well as a number of presentations from visiting authors organised by Mrs Barnes in the library.

The process for allocating students to next year’s classes is thorough and starts in Term 4. As part of this process some parents may feel that they can assist by offering additional information about their son. Should you wish to express a view about the style of classroom management you feel may best suit your son (e.g. particularly nurturing or greater structure, etc.) I invite you to contact me via email before the end of this term. Please note that I cannot consider requests submitted later than this deadline. Requests for particular teachers or for a teacher based on his or her gender will not be considered in this process. Whilst we do welcome parental input in the process, the school has the final say in decisions regarding class placement for 2018.

It is with some sadness that I inform you, that after many areas of outstanding service to the Wyvern community, Rev Peter Morphew has decided that, at the end of this year, it will be the right time for him to leave the College to spend more time with his family and to offer more support to his local church. Whilst there will be time in coming weeks to reflect on and celebrate Rev Morphew’s wonderful contribution to the school, I do want to take the opportunity to thank him for his selfless and dedicated care of  boys, staff and parents of Wyvern over many years. We have all benefitted from Rev Morphew’s great wisdom and compassion. He has been a superb servant of the whole College community and we wish him every blessing as he moves into a new phase of his life.

Artists of the Week

K – 2 Artists of the Week

Archie Hanna 2M and Angus Baker Wood 2M

Year 2 finished off their Still Life unit of work by exploring some basic printmaking techniques.  The boys ‘sketch-etched’ into a scratch foam plate, they used washable markers to ‘ink the plate’ and then using dampened paper the boys ‘lifted a print’.   Angus and Archie showed great craftsmanship and produced a fabulous pineapple print as a result.   Well done!

Faith Matters

A prayer of even little faith can achieve great things.

A visiting preacher told the congregation that anyone needing prayer should come forward, though inwardly he was thinking about his past lack of results. Thirty people responded and he prayed for them. Later that week a woman called and said, “Last Sunday you prayed for my husband. He had cancer, and he died.” “Much good my prayers did,” he thought. The lady continued, “When we walked into church my husband was angry. He wanted to see his grandchildren grow up, and every day he cursed God. Being around him was unbearable. But after you prayed for him he walked out a different person. His last days were the best we’d ever had; we talked, laughed, and sang hymns together. He wasn’t cured, but he was healed.”

Only God knows why some are healed while others aren’t. But we are assured that God’s purposes are for our ultimate good.

Parentech: A conversation around living, learning and parenting in the digital age

It was really great spending the time during Parent Teacher Interviews discussing my role at Wyvern and Lindfield and also the conversations around the effective use of technology. After all the conversations it got me really thinking about the effect that technology has on our students’ lives and also the effect it has on our own lives.

#Parentech is an incredible resource put together by the Australian Parents Council. It aims to provide a space for parents to access information about technology usage, screen time, conversational resources and also a space to have your say about what you are finding difficult. You are able to access this website by heading to parentech.com.au

An interesting finding that comes out of the research done by Dr Ruston, director of the film Screenagers, is around the mounting pressure that is placed on the whole family when it comes to the usage of technology in everyday life. As this pressure mounts, decisions need to be made to help guide and assist our students and children in using technology effectively. This is where the analogy that it takes a village to raise a child applies once again. As a collective support mechanism for our boys, we need to ensure that we are promoting positive use of technology and guiding them in making correct and ethical choices when engaging online or using digital devices.

Dr Rushton also explores how to get the balance right at home when it comes to using technology. She investigated how her own family aims to maintain a healthy relationship between technology, school and home. You can view a trailer of her film, Screenagers on YouTube or if you head to parentech.com.au you will find more information about Dr Rushton and her work.

With the help of websites like Parentech it makes having these informed conversations a lot easier. As a parent, you can feel more supported and in control of guiding your children in making those right choices.

If you would like to discuss this more or have any questions regarding navigating the difficult conversation around technology usage please do not hesitate in contacting me.

Science Week

Wyvern celebrated ‘Science Week’ with a bang. Three ‘Chemistry Chaos’ shows were led by Year 6 which left the audience spellbound. All year groups could watch one of three shows at various lunchtimes. We marvelled at the ever flowing dry ice in water, Mentos fountains in Diet Coke, giant bubbles and many more chemistry experiments. Science week was evident in all the classes and here are some examples: Year 1 focused on the cycle of life in plants and designed, made and tested a pollinator which was created from a range of set materials. Year 2 continued their chemistry topic by finding out why oil always floats to the top of water. Also that detergent molecules are attracted to both water and oil. Year 3 created tornados in bottles linked to their Weather topic and Year 5 will enjoy a Fizzics show on Friday. Year 6 led the week and were all great role models of scientists willing to fail and try again in the name of Science. All in all a wonderful and engaging ‘Science Week’ was evident at Wyvern.

Year 1 Designing, Making and Testing  a Pollinator

Year 2 Mixing Liquid

Year 3 Tornados in a Bottle

Year 6 conducted lunchtime science experiments for Years 3 and 4

Year 6 conducted lunchtime experiments for K – 2
