A Message from Mr Holden

It has been a busy two weeks at Wyvern, especially for parents, as many of you have taken time out of your busy schedules to attend information sessions for THRASS and Big Write (our whole school literacy approaches), as well as this week’s Parent Teacher meetings. We really appreciate your commitment to such events.

On Sunday 8th March we celebrate International Women’s Day. Class teachers will remind their students that it is a special day to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities. It is important at Wyvern that we take time to recognise such mighty achievements, as well as to advocate and to promote equal rights for woman both in our country and internationally.

Further to the Headmaster’s letter in relation to the College’s advice about the Coronavirus, I want to make you aware that we have stepped up a series of hygiene measures. Students and staff have been advised to wash their hands regularly and thoroughly with antibacterial hand wash which has been provided to all classrooms as well as the bathrooms. Hand sanitisers have also been placed in classrooms, and work spaces and other hard services are being disinfected regularly. For the time being, we are discouraging handshakes between students and staff, as well as parents. Students have been reminded about the protocol of coughing and we encourage anyone with flu like symptoms to stay in quarantine at home. The College will continue to send out updates as further information comes to hand.

A reminder that on Monday 16 March the school will be closed due to the Newington Long Weekend.

K-2 Artist of the Week

Year 1 worked in oil pastel and watercolour to explore a creative representation of the sun.  They made excellent use of a variety of lines to indicate the movement of light and heat.  Cooper, Oscar and Logan demonstrated pleasing craftsmanship and stretched their creativity to explore multiple ways of representing the sun.  Well done!

Years 3-6 Artist of the Week

The Artist of the Week comes from Year 6. The Year 6 boys went on a tour of Stanmore Graffiti. They took photos on their Ipads and were then able to manipulate them on the app Pic Collage. The boys researched images by the Artist ‘Mulga’ and then were able to create amazing street images after looking at his work.

The artist ‘Mulga’ came in for a guest appearance and the boys were also able to participate in a Gorilla drawing workshop.

The boys used the photos of their work to create a layered print on grained paper.

Congratulations to Sam Rudd for his beautiful printed work.

Year 5 also attended a STEAM excursion at the MCA on Monday.  The boys were taken through the exhibition about the ‘Past, Present and Future’ They then went on to complete a workshop combining technology to create an adaptation of an animal. Well done to the boys of Year 5 for their enthusiasm and participation in this excursion.

Year 4 Excursion to the Royal Botanic Gardens

On Tuesday 25th February, the students in Year 4 enjoyed the exciting opportunity to take their learning to the Royal Botanic Gardens. In class, the boys had been inquiring into the significance of Australia’s environment, the different perspectives held about it by people over time, and how and why we should protect it.

A tour of the carnivorous plants exhibition and activities allowed the boys to explore the processes of pollination and life cycles of plants – culminating in planting their own seeds – and served to tune their thinking in to plants, their purpose and the gardens themselves.

The experience then led the students to learn from knowledgeable guides as they walked through the Cadi Jam Ora, hearing stories about the traditional and contemporary uses of native plants by Aboriginal people. Further examination of plants allowed us to discover how they were used by original custodians for food, medicine, shelter, tools and weapons.

The excursion was a fantastic way to elevate our learning in class and provided the basis for rich discussion, with tangible examples, when we returned to school. Well done to the boys on their inquisitive approach to this learning opportunity and their exemplary conduct throughout. Thank you to all the parents who offered to come along and assist us on the day.
