- 2.00pm – 3.00pm – Years 5 & 6 – Ruben Meerman the Surfing Scientist – Climate Change
Ruben begins by answering the most basic question: why do we have weather on planet Earth? Using liquid nitrogen and a balloon, he demonstrates how the Sun’s heat, combined with the Earth’s rotation, generates every form of weather we experience. He explains the seasons, jet streams, the Coriolis Effect and the thermohaline circulation of our oceans.
By the end of this introduction, audiences will understand that climate is the long-term average of a region’s weather and why both weather and climates are so incredibly difficult to predict. Next, Ruben presents the evidence of natural climate change cycles caused by changes in the Earth’s orbit around the Sun and cataclysmic events such as asteroid impacts and volcanic activity.
