RoboCup NSW Junior Open

On Monday 20 August nine boys competed in the RoboCup NSW Junior Open. Samuel Perivolaris, Mark Elwaw, Connor Mills, Ethan Dickson and Liam Taylor competed in the Junior Search and Rescue event, finishing with a total of 174 points and a credible 31st place. Dominic Demyane and Joon Tae McFadden took their dance to the song Higher, Faster, Stronger, Better into the Junior Dance event and performed admirably, improving on their regional performance. Finally, Sydney Regional winner’s Rhett Schlaphoff and Jackson Sumich took their Thriller Dance through the rounds. They performed brilliantly and made the final to finish in the top 5 of NSW.

The RoboCup Club has finished for 2012. I will be looking for new enthusiastic and creative boys to be part of a new Robotics Club for the final two weeks of Term 3 and beginning of Term 4. Stay tuned for more details next week.

Tournament of Minds

On Sunday 26 August, seven students from Years 5 and 6 competed in the Tournament of Minds, Sydney East Regional Finals held at Sydney Girls High School. Tournament of Minds is an International problem-solving program requiring students to respond to a complex open-ended question in a creative and divergent way. This year the team competed in the Maths Engineering division and were required to present a Long–term Challenge whilst also responding to a Spontaneous Challenge. We are very pleased to report that the team were awarded First Place in their division and now go on to represent the school at the State Finals on Sunday 9 September at the University of New South Wales. We are exceptionally proud of their achievement and wish them the best of luck for the next stage of their competition.

Year 6 Canberra Excursion

Australian Government Assistance for National Capital Excursion

On Wednesday 5 September, Year 6 students from the Wyvern and Lindfield campuses will depart for an educational tour of the national capital. While on this tour they will participate in a variety of educational programs focused on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. These include the National Museum of Australia, Museum of Australian Democracy – Old Parliament House, Electoral Education Centre, Parliament House, Questacon – The National Science and Technology Centre, CSIRO Discovery, Australian Institute of Sport, and The Australian War Memorial.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit their national capital as part of their civics and citizenship education. The Australian Government contributes funding under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) programme towards the travel expenses incurred.

We would like to thank the Australian Government for their support of this program.

We hope that the excursion will be a rewarding experience for all students.

Artist of the Week

Weeks 5 and 6

K-2
Rocco Vitalone of Year 1 drew the shape of a crab and used orange, skin tone and purple oil pastel  to colour it in. He then cleverly blended the colours with a white top coat to create an effect that looked like a real crab shell.

Years 3-6
Taliesin Armstrong and Bryce Lenthall in Year 6,were  awarded certificates for their original and expressive ‘Olympian’ sculptures. The boys first created a posed wire figure armature (interior frame) attached to a CD spigot, then covered and extended it with plaster bandages. They gave their artworks a metallic finish with carefully applied acrylic paint.

Year 5 Bathurst Excursion

On Wednesday 22 August, all 5 classes from Wyvern and Lindfield. began the lengthy, but exciting coach journey to Bathurst, NSW. We were off to study some important landmarks from the Australian gold rushes of the 19th Century and take in some other interesting sites along the way. Our first journey was broken up by a visit to Echo Point to view The Three Sisters and an exhilarating walk through the Jenolan Caves. We were staying at the Bathurst Sheep and Cattle Drome and celebrated our arrival with a bushdance in the exhibition hall.

The following day was action-packed and began with a show by the farmers and shearers at the sheep and cattle drome. During the afternoon we managed to find time to take a tour around the historic town of Hill End, climb up a disused mine shaft and pan, with varying success, for alluvial gold in a creek!

Our trip was not over, however, and we still had time to visit the Bathurst Goldfields museum on Friday morning. Here we were able to see a huge range of artefacts from the era, discover what it was like to work, rest and play like a 19th Century miner and buy some last minute souvenirs before reboarding our coaches for the long trip back to school.

It was a wonderful trip and all of the guides and teachers were impressed with the way that boys learnt, listened and represented their college.

A Message from Mr Holden

Book Week

This week has been Book Week with the theme ‘Champion’s Read’. Once more Wyvern students have had great opportunities to be inspired by visiting authors, to be involved in exciting activities and to visit our comprehensive Book Fair in the library. Our library team of Mrs Joanne Barnes and Mrs Andrea Turner have done great work in preparing such a stimulating program and I thank them for their efforts.

I thank the SRC, students, parents and teachers for a magnificent response to our “Room to Read” fund raising project with all money raised funding new libraries and supplying books to schools in Cambodia. The initial target of Wyvern raising $1000 has been significantly exceeded. The final total of money raised for this worthwhile cause is a remarkable $3,321.30.

Class Allocation 2013

The process for allocating students to next year’s classes is thorough and starts in Term 4. As part of this process some parents may feel that they can assist by offering additional information about their son. Should you wish to express a view about the style of classroom management you feel may best suit your son (e.g. particularly nurturing or greater structure) I invite you to contact me via email before the end of this term. Please note that I cannot consider requests submitted later than this deadline.

Requests for particular teachers or for a teacher based on his or her gender will not be considered in this process. Whilst we do welcome parental input in the process, the school has the final say in decisions regarding class placement for 2013.

Study Leave

Finally, I notify you that I will be away from school next week (3-7 September) for a week’s study leave. In my absence, Ms Sandra Gray will step in as Acting Head of Wyvern so do feel free to contact her over any issues that she can assist you with.

P&F News and Events

Spring is in the Air

The weekend past saw the K-2 Father and Son Camp. Huge thanks goes to Karl Cope who directed and coordinated the weekend without any mishaps. Thanks also goes to the Camp Committee including Emma Cope, Philip Argy and David Mills. We are now looking for dads to assist with the running of the camp next year (2013). If you would like to send in your details to us we can include this in the Camp Committee for 2013. There is nothing too involved – your commitment will make it a success in 2013.

The P&F meeting that was held last Thursday saw a wonderful commitment from the Wyvern parents. Thank you to those who attended and special thanks to the Gap Students who assisted with the child minding and ‘free pizzas’.  The kids played games on the rooftop and had a great time.

Term 4 will see the boys wearing their full summer uniform which consists of a short sleeve shirt, grey shorts and a black jumper for cooler days. All these items are available from the Uniform Shop. Please check your uniform supplies before we go on school holidays so that you are ready for the first day back in Term 4.

The Fathers’ Day breakfast will be held tomorrow morning in Wyvern Hall and the rooftop. Many thanks to the Year 2 parent group who have organised ‘pass the ball and soccer shoot outs’. There will be delicious food and steaming coffee available.  This is another successful event that the Wyvern P&F provides for families fee of charge to develop the sense of community. Thank you to all those who will be attending and if you do not wish to be included in the Waratah’s photos for their website, please see me at the door on the morning.

The Newington College Rowing Support Committee will be selling ‘School Fee’ raffle tickets for $100  for a chance to win your son’s 2013 school fees. They will be located in the foyer just outside Wyvern Hall entrance. If you are interested, card, cash or cheques will be accepted.

Newington College Rugby GPS are currently undefeated with a 10 point lead. This weekend they take on Shore and we would like to encourage any boy in Wyvern to attend the game. It is a requirement to wear your full school uniform (blazer included) to support the school as they chase premiership glory.

Wyvern Faith Matters

Anybody can do it!

Chuck Swindoll writes: ‘The ski slopes were in perfect condition. I struck out on my first attempt at skiing with a positive attitude, thinking, “I’m going to be the first person who learns to ski without falling down.” You’ve heard of the Elephant Man? On skis, I’m the rhinoceros man. It’s doubtful that anyone ever came down a ski slope more ways, or landed in more positions, or did more creative things in the air before landing. Working with me that humiliating day was the world’s most encouraging ski instructor (yes, I had an instructor!). Never once did she lose her cool, or laugh at me, or say “You are absolutely impossible. I quit!” That dear, gracious lady helped me up more times than I can number. She repeated the same basics time and again – like she had never said them before. Even though I was colder than an explorer in the Antarctic, irritable, impatient, and under the snow more than I was on it, she kept offering words of reassurance. That day, God gave me a never-to-be-forgotten illustration of the value of encouragement. Had it not been for her spirit and her words, believe me, I would have hung ’em up and been back in the condo, warming my feet by the fire in less than an hour. What is true for a novice on the snow once a year is all the more true for people we meet every day. Harassed by demands and deadlines; bruised by worry, adversity and failure; broken by disillusionment, they live somewhere between dull discouragement and sheer panic. All of us need encouragement, and the beautiful part about encouragement is this: anybody can do it!’
