Garage Sale for Malawi – 9th & 10th November

Following the huge success of Wyvern House fund raising activities that purchased 135 goats for the Kasupe Goat Farm in Malawi we are expanding the Goat Farm Project. Our plan is to build a shop in the village to sell to the community much needed goat meat and milk and install a solar power unit to run the refrigeration required in the shop.
The last few years we’ve held Garage Sales in my street with the wonderful support from neighbours. These sales have been incredibly successful in raising money for Malawi so we’re now collecting for this year’s sale to be held on 9th & 10th November.

The majority of the sale will be clothing – give your clothes  ‘A Second Chance’. Also, we’ll have other stalls and from past experience we’ve found these the best items to sell:

*   Clothes – male/female, baby to mature adults. Including hats, scarves, jewellery, shoes & bags.
*   CDs & DVDs
*   Small Household items – bric a brac, china, vases, lamps, place mats, linen, table cloths – no electronics.
*   Books – Children & teenager books only.
*   Children’s Games & toys –  in good condition
*   Fabric, wool & knitting needles – what we don’t sell we’ll send to Malawi for the women in the village.
*   Small pieces of Furniture – we don’t have storage space for large furniture. Egs of saleable furniture: stools/chairs, small tables, mirrors.

For these larger items please contact me to arrange collection or drop off  to my home  9 Spencer Rd  Mosman where the sale is held.

Also, contact me if you are not sure whether items are suitable for the sale – mbowenjones@gmail.com or phone  9909 3010
Collection details: Please drop any smaller items off to the office or contact jbrayley@newington.nsw.edu.au (at school by Wednesday 7th November)

For more information Like us on Facebook ‘Malawi Kasupe Community’.

A huge THANK YOU for your support.

Faith Matters

The Victorious Limp

Virtuoso violinist Pinchas Zukerman was giving a master class to a group of young artist who had come to the Aspen Music Festival from the four corners of the world. The auditorium was filled with their peers, distinguished teachers and performers; the atmosphere was electric. To each of the talented performers Zukerman offered friendly advice and encouragement, discussing their playing in detail, and invariably picking up his own violin to demonstrate finer points of technique and interpretation.

Finally came the turn of a young musician who performed brilliantly. When the applause subsided, Zukerman complimented the artist, then walk over to his own violin, caressed it, tucked it under his chin, paused a long moment, and then, without playing a note or uttering a word gently placed it back in its case. Once more, the applause broke out, and this time it was deafening, in recognition of the master, who could pay such a gracious compliment.

After his triple denial of Jesus, what future would have awaited the disciple Peter if he had to depend on my patience, understanding, and compassion? Instead of a shrug, sneer, slap or curse, Jesus responded with the subtlest and most gracious compliment imaginable. He named Peter the leader of the faith community and entrusted him with authority to preach the Good News.

The limping Peter’s betrayal of Jesus, like so many of our own moral relapses and refusals of grace, was not a terminal failure but the occasion for painful personal growth in fidelity.

A Message from Mr Holden

School Leaders 2014

At this time of the term we consider which of our current Year 5 students have the potential to undertake a number of Wyvern student leadership positions for next year. The student school leader selection process is extremely thorough with every staff member and student (Year 3- 6) having some input. We use the following criteria to help us to form our judgments.

Capacity as a Role Model

How the student conducts himself on a day to day basis consistent with the school’s values of respect, care for others and service to the community. Furthermore, how the student participates in all aspects of school life including a strong contribution to co-curricular activities.

Presentation Skills

The ability of the student to speak confidently and persuasively to different audiences: e.g. large and small groups of peers and adults, in both formal and informal settings and within prepared and impromptu speaking situations.

Care for Others

How the student demonstrates a service ethic and a capacity to think of others: e.g. selfless behaviour, assistance provided to others and the capacity to work as part of a team. In other words, evidence of ‘servant leadership’.

Using these criteria we select a School Captain, two School Vice Captains, School Officers, House Captains and House Vice Captains.

In addition, there are many opportunities for all Year 6 students to take up various monitor roles next year. Information about these will be given to the boys at the start of next year.  It is important to emphasise that all Year 6 students are leaders in the school and therefore should be excellent role models for the rest of the school. As such I have extremely high expectations about their conduct and contribution. A leadership training day for the whole Year 6 cohort is planned in Term 1, 2014.

P and F

At last week’s AGM for Wyvern’s Parents and Friends a new executive committee was elected to be headed up by Mrs Natalie Mina as President. I thank Natalie and her new team for being so willing to make this important contribution to the school community.

Orientation Days

This week students joining the school in 2014 spent a day at Wyvern. Many parents have subsequently commented on the warm welcome extended to their sons by the Wyvern community. I  particularly thank the team of parent volunteers who assisted on the orientation days.

Celebrating our 1913 Julibee

The College’s Sesquicentenary this year has not been our first big anniversary full of celebrations; nor indeed was our Centenary in 1963. In 1913 the College celebrated in ‘golden’ Jubilee, marking fifty years since it was founded. We are fortunate in having a detailed record of the Jubilee, set out in a special edition of The Newingtonian published at the end of 1913.

While the anniversary of the College’s opening was in July, the Jubilee’s planners ‘felt that the weather at that season was not favourable, least of all for any outdoor function’. Thus the first event, the Jubilee Service, was held on 24 September. The Stanmore Methodist Church, serving as the College’s chapel, was decorated with flags, flowers and ‘festoons of greenery’. This event was primarily for the present boys, who appeared in three divisions: boarders in the ‘historic School uniform’ [in fact, the old blue Cadet uniform], the day boy Cadets in their new khaki uniforms, and ‘the little boys going in their ordinary clothes’. The service was followed by cricket matches and a supper in the evening, ‘and much amusement was given by two groups of boys who had prepared scenes of entertainment for the rest.’

A week later, the Old Newingtonians held their reunion. A dinner in the dining hall, ‘the sitting of which had been remodelled to provide for the unaccustomed size of the company’, was followed by a gathering in the ‘schoolroom’ (now the Prescott Hall). ‘The School colours, flags, ivy ferns, and palms gave a picturesque appearance’, while conspicuous among the decorations were the shields and banners won by the Cadets that year as State and Commonwealth Competition Champions. Instead of ‘Dear Newingtonia’, the Old Boys sang ‘Floreat Newingtonia’, composed by L H Allen (ON 1899) and sung to the tune of ‘Men of Harlech’.

Another week saw the Jubilee Dinner at the Farmer & Co. Café in the City. This event brought together staff and members of the College Council, along with Headmasters of other schools and representatives from the Parliament, the Methodist Church, the Education Department and the University of Sydney. Much of the evening seems to have been taken up with toasts and responses, reported verbatim in the Jubilee Newingtonian. Still more speeches were to have been made, but were prevented by the requirement to close the restaurant at 10 o’clock, ‘to the regret of all present’.

The final event, a garden party, was to have been held on 4 October, but was postponed for a week, due to the arrival in Sydney of the new Australian Fleet, the centenary of which has been celebrated with the International Fleet Review over the past fortnight. The garden party was planned ‘so as to give the mothers, wives and sisters of old and present boys the opportunity of participating’, in contrast to the other, male-dominated events. Hundreds of guests enjoyed refreshments on the Colonnade and elsewhere, while the Newtown band ‘discoursed music in the distance’ and the 1st XI played the ‘I Zingari’ Cricket Club.

The Jubilee was also an opportunity to raise funds to help secure the College’s future. Unlike the fundraising for our Sesquicentenary building projects, the Jubilee Fund was only started in the Jubilee year, with the aim of raising £10,000 over the following three or four years. By the time the Jubilee Newingtonian was published, £7,000 had been raised already.
