KOALA Ceremony

Lights! Camera! Action! These are appropriate words to describe the Kids Own Australian Literature Awards (KOALA) presentation that took place on Wednesday October 30th in the Old Boys Lecture Theatre at the Senior School. Each year, students from all over New South Wales become judges for their very own literary awards. By casting their vote in the KOALA awards they can recognise and award the Australian children’s books that have most inspired, amused, enlightened and engaged them.

Twenty Wyvern boys, along with students from 14 other State and Independent schools, joined a star studded literary line-up of Australian children’s authors including three authors who visited Wyvern for this year’s Newington Literature Festival and Book Week – Felice Arena (Specky Magee and Andy Roid) Oliver Phommavanh ( Con-Nerd and Thai-no-Mite) and Morris Gleitzman ( Toad Rage, Once, Then, Now and After).  The author and illustrator Bruce Whatley, Belinda Murrell, Duncan Ball, Chris Morphew and Emily Rodda rounded out the visiting authors with Nick Bland, Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton appearing to the audience through video message. Each author related a short story about the teacher or school incident that had a profound effect on their journey to become an author. Bruce Whatley shared that he always had difficulty with reading and he didn’t learn to read until he was ten years old. This story had great impact with many of the students in the audience.

Then the big moment came and it was time to announce of the awards chosen by the students

Best Picture Book The Very Cranky Bear by Nick Bland
Honour Books Ella Kazoo Will Not Brush Her Hair by Lee Fox and Cathy Wilcox

The Little Refugee by Anh & Suzanne Do

Best Fiction Book for Younger Readers The Golden Door by Emily Rodda
Honour Books Alice Miranda Shows the Way by Jacqueline Harvey

Pizza Cake by Morris Gleitzman

Best Fiction Book for Older Readers 26-Storey Treehouse by Andy Griffiths & Terry Denton
Honour Books The Forgotten Pearl by Belinda Murrell

Thai-Riffic! by Oliver Phommavanh

Best Fiction Book for Years 7 to 9 The Phoenix Files: Contact by Chris Morphew
Honour Books The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak

After by Morris Gleitzman

Wyvern boys were very excited when it was announced that Felice Arena was chosen as the KOALA  Legend for 2013.  Felice is a wonderful, dedicated writer of children’s literature. His writing is fun, fast-paced and appealing to younger readers. When he visited Wyvern for the Newington Literature Festival this year, the 350 boys in Years 3 to 6, had an inspiring and fun-filled session with him. His books flew off the library shelves even more than they normally do. His selection as a Legend was a very popular choice!

Later, the boys had the opportunity to collect autographs and chat with their favourite authors. They came back to Wyvern full of enthusiasm for the awards ceremony which they were able to share with their classmates.

This Awards Ceremony highlights how important and worthwhile organisations like KOALA are for the promotion of reading and literature for children.

Newington Buses: Change to 560 Route

Former ROZELLE 560 School Special

The 560 School Special which originates from Leichhardt Depot has had its first and last stop of the route changed to Gladstone Park at Balmain.

The bus will now leave from Gladstone Park at 7:18am and travel along Darling Street to Victoria Road. From there the route is the same as before. The service will finish back at Gladstone Park in the afternoon around 4.00pm. All the new information can be found on the Transport Insite.

Life Saving the First Headmaster of Newington

The histories of Newington and of Tupou College, our brother school in Tonga, would have been very different but for the quick action of two boys.

One Thursday in October 1863, the 22 year old James Egan Moulton, Newington’s first ‘Head Master’, took a group of boys for a swim at Haslams Creek, some distance from Newington House. While all the boys could swim well, Moulton could swim only ‘very indifferently’. As soon as he entered the water he sank to the bottom. Immediately, two boys, Robert McKeown, aged 16, and Andrew Houison, 13, plunged in and ‘with the greatest difficulty and after severe struggling saved his life.’

We know about this incident from a letter written a few days later by the College’s founding President, Rev John Allen Manton, to Robert McKeown’s father. Manton’s copy of the letter is in the College Archives. He wrote to Robert’s father ‘Fearing that you should hear a garbled account of what has taken place here and become alarmed for the safety of your son.’

Manton was quick to reassure Mr McKeown that, while the party ‘all came home in a very exhausted state’, they were recovering rapidly. He was clearly proud of the two boys: ‘The heroic conduct of your son is beyond all praise, and the event will not soon be forgotten here.’ He added that ‘Mr Moulton is so beloved by all the boys that I believe there is not one but would risk his life to save him from danger.’

Moulton remained at Newington until early in 1865, when he sailed to Tonga to resume his missionary calling. The next year, he established Tupou College, under the patronage of King Siaosi (George) Tupou I. He continued to work there for 20 years and was associated with Tonga for more than 40 years, becoming a beloved and revered figure. In 1893, he returned to Newington as President, serving in this role until he retired in 1900.

The Salvation Army Christmas Tree

Please support the Salvation Army in their efforts to ensure that needy families receive gifts at Christmas Time.

Dear Parents,

On Friday morning Wyvern’s Christmas Tree will be erected in the school’s front foyer. As part of the SRC initiative each year we ask Wyvern families to support this cause by donating a gift to a needy family.  All gifts should be visible and wrapped in clear cellophane paper and labelled either boy/girl and for what age group. This allows for easy identification. Gifts should be left under the Christmas Tree. In the past, our students have taken pride in giving to those who are less fortunate. The Salvation Army will hand these gifts our to needy families so that they too can celebrate Christmas on Christmas Day. Please give generously so that these families feel special.

P & F News and Events

Hello!

I’ve got some big shoes to fill in this role, taking over from Julie Gigg who did such a wonderful job as President. But I’m feeling a great deal of comfort – and excitement – knowing that the P&F Executive team has such a super group of members volunteering their time and energy to support our school community. I’m especially pleased to have Emma Cope as the Vice President.

There is still one vacancy on the P&F Executive, which is the position of CAST Support. CAST is the Creative Arts Support Team that assists the art and music departments, and is behind the success of our stand at Back to Newington Day. If you’re interested in the position please email Nicole Newson at nicnewson@msn.com.

Our Class Parents are being secured for next year with some current parents already confirming they will stay on and new parents joining us to represent Year 5, as this year’s Year 4 class parents have both joined the P&F Executive. Class Parents are very important contributors to our school culture and to the solid connections made by families in each year group. I’ve volunteered in this job in the past and understand the work involved and the great intentions of the parents who do this work. Thank you so much.

If you would like to be a Class Parent in 2014 , click here for more information.

Another big thank you to all the families who have recently volunteered to help new boys and their families settle into Wyvern House next year by being mentors for the families joining their son’s year group. Starting a new school can seem daunting to children and their parents, and our goal is to make their start a great one with a warm welcome from the Newington community.

If you would like to get involved in the Wyvern Family Mentor Program, Click here

And one more huge thank you to Toby and Janie Guy who have successfully run the Year 3-6 Father and Son Camp at Cockatoo Island this year. It was so popular that we sold out of our initial allocation almost immediately then filled a second allocation of tents. Nearly 300 fathers and sons attended and had a fantastic time.

Hopefully you can attend the Cupcake Decorating Competition in Mary Andrews Garden on Friday, 15 November from 3:30pm – 5:00pm. Our boys will enter and judge the competition and we can check out the new playground equipment. Our famous wood fire pizza and homemade lemonade will be on offer for an easy dinner solution.

Upcoming events

  • Wednesday 13 November – Year 6 Surf Day
  • Thursday 14 November – Year 5 Surf Day
  • Friday 15 November – Wyvern Cupcake Decorating Competition, 3:00-5:00pm
  • Sunday 24 November – Kindy Christmas Picnic and Year 3 Mothers’ Lunch
  • Wednesday 4 December – End of Term 4 for K – 2
  • Thursday 5 December – Years 3 – 6 Prize Giving & End of Term 4

Finally, please, please sign up to SPACES. Both Wyvern and the senior school are using it more extensively and, once you’re familiar with it, it’s really the most efficient way to get information – all the news of the day that is relevant to you is sent to you in one email. And, of course, while you’re there, make sure you sign up to Wyvern: Parents and Friends.

Until next time, be well and happy.

How to Treat a Burn

With all the terrible fires around Sydney I thought I would remind you about first aid for burns. Burns are divided into 3 categories:-

  • Superficial – these burns cause damage to first layer of skin. The burn site will be red and painful.
  • Partial thickness – includes damage to the first and second skin layers. The burn site will be red, peeling, blistering and swelling with clear or yellow-coloured fluid leaking from the skin. This burn site is very painful.
  • Full thickness – involves damage to both the first and second skin layers, plus the underlying tissues, muscle, bone and organs. The burn site is usually black or charred with white exposed fatty tissue or bone. The nerve endings are generally destroyed and so there is little or no pain experienced at the site of the full-thickness burn. However, surrounding partial thickness burns will be very painful.

First aid for minor burns

Initial first aid can influence final cosmetic outcome, so know what to do.

If possible, remove jewelry and clothing from around the injury unless the clothing is stuck to the burn.

Immediately cool the area under cool running water until the skin returns to normal temperature up to 20 minutes. This will help up to 3 hours after a burn has occurred. Studies have shown that this significantly reduces tissue damage, improves wound healing and decreases scarring. If this is not possible apply and continually reapply a cold-water compress. Do not use ice or iced water as this can worsen the injury. If a limb is burned – elevate to reduce swelling if feasible.

Cover the burn with clean, sterile (if possible), non-stick material. Laying (not wrapping) a few layers of cling wrap over the burn is appropriate once cooled. Cling film is very clean, transparent, won’t stick and provides a barrier. Keep the person warm by covering up unburned areas of the body.

Remember – COOL THE BURN, WARM THE PERSON

DO NOT use adhesive dressings, apply fat, ointment or lotions, break a blister or touch a burn.

Jelonet, a Vaseline gauze can be folded and applied to a minor burn. There is an extensive range of dressings and treatments available for more serious burns.

Urgent hospitalization is required for

  • burns covering large areas of the body (for example, the arm, thigh or chest)
  • electrical or chemical burns
  • burns of the face, hands, genitals, feet, joints or airway
  • third degree (full thickness) burns the very young and the elderly
  • a person, if they have another serious medical condition such as diabetes.

So finally make sure your smoke alarm battery at home has been changed recently and keep safe this bushfire season.

Faith Matters

Pawned?

Ever been to a pawnshop? Cash Converters or the like? You’ll find them in most major cities. The idea is simple; if you need money, you take a valuable item like jewellery or a musical instrument to the shop where the pawnbroker appraises it and gives you cash. But if you don’t return within the specified time to redeem the item, you forfeit ownership. Although it was yours originally, you no longer have legal possession till you pay the price to get it back. And if you wait too long, it can be lost forever.

Have you ever thought of yourself as somebody who needs to be redeemed, so you can be returned to your rightful owner? The Bible suggests that we are all like that and Jesus is the one who offers to pay the redemption price for us. The story of redemption starts at Christmas and finds it culmination at Easter.

Year 3

In Year 3, Students finished their “Moonlight” prints, based on Japanese block printing. Students were shown how to use the scratch foam and make the moonlight “shine” on the water. Students also collaged cherry blossoms onto the surface of their print. All the prints were beautiful, I am so proud of Year 3.

Joel Goh “Moonlight with Cherry Blossoms”

Year 4

Students finished painting their “machine” paintings using tints and tones. This acrylic painting was painted in stages as students explored the work of Leger and his paintings of the modern age. Some original and exciting work. Well Done Year 4.

Max Gallant – “Machine” Painting

Year 5

Students in Year 5 have finished their “Gold” woodwork and painted cartouches. Some excellent examples of Egyptian motifs by these students.
