Year 6 are currently preparing to start work for their “Wyvernbald” portraits.
Students investigated continuous line portraits on the app “sketchbook pro”. Students took ‘selfies’ and used the paint tools as well as the colour layers to experiment with a wide range of techniques. Boys were amazed at the results which focused on colour and composition.

Dear Parents,
Have your son(s) been watching the recent Winter Olympics in Sochi and asked you, ‘I wish I could do that?’
Do you have a son that is keen to give competitive skiing/boarding a try?
If the answer is yes, I encourage you to be a part of the Newington Snowsports program. It is a team that encourages boys of all ages and skill levels from all three Newington campuses to compete in the Sydney Interschools Championships in Perisher from the 9th-12th of July (3rd week of winter holidays)
If this sounds like something your son(s) may be interested in, please join the Newington Snowsports ‘Space’ on the Spaces websites or contact Mr Justin Verco, MIC of Snowsports for more information; jverco@newington.nsw.edu.au

Hello!
The term one P&F meeting was really good – according to lots of feedback, as well as my personal opinion. The speakers were fantastic – thanks Mr Holden, Mr Baker and Miss Clemens – and engaged parents with their presentations. We had record attendance and questions, praise and concerns were raised, which generated pertinent discussions. We’ll either revert back to individual parents with the result of action items or bring these to the next P&F meeting.
The P&F meeting participants voted in favour of contributing $5,000 towards the Wyvern music weekend on 24-25 May. This is an important musical activity for our boys, many of whom are in choir and/or a band. This P&F support will fund the cost of the music tutors and catering to ensure an educational and enjoyable experience that complements the boys’ musical activity through the year. We will need some volunteers for afternoon tea on the 24th as well as morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea on 25 May. More details will be available soon, but if you’re interested please email Creative Arts Support Team Lead Nicole Newson.
The other decision we made on the night was to support local residents with their efforts to introduce a traffic management and pedestrian safety campaign with the local community, focusing on the intersection of Harrow Road and Merchant Street. The working group is engaging with Marrickville Council and will continue to liaise with us as the campaign evolves. This topic will be raised again at next term’s P&F meeting.
Speaking of the term two meeting on Thursday, 15 May… The theme has been confirmed. Our school counsellor Campbell Jensen-Robilliard will introduce the topic of social and emotional development in boys, and touch on the kinds of interventions and strategies that he uses at school.
Additionally, Kate Green and Melanie Bryden are very excited to be presenting the Treehouse program, sharing insight into the kinds of social and emotional learning experiences that have been developed to help boys maintain and improve their skills in resilience, persistence, getting along with others, organisation and confidence.
All three presenters are very passionate about this topic and their responsibilities, and are very excited to have the opportunity to talk to us. I’m really looking forward to this meeting.
Dates for your diary
Until next time, be well and happy.

Trying to explain God is like trying to explain a kiss.
You can check the dictionary definition: “A caress with the lips; a gentle touch or contact.” But does that really capture the essence of what a kiss is? Does that describe what a mother does when she tenderly places her lips on the forehead of her newborn? Is that what the young lover does when he says good-night to his girl, with a first kiss? Does it grasp the passion and intimacy of long term lovers?
Just as words cannot completely capture all that is involved in describing a “kiss”, we also cannot fully comprehend, explain, or define “God”. That’s where we enter the realm of faith.
In Isaiah 55 God says, “My thoughts and my ways are not like yours. Just as the heavens are higher than the earth, my thoughts and my ways are higher than yours.” Which makes sense because how could the finite fully comprehend the infinite?
Yet we can know God intimately if not completely through experiencing His revelation of Himself in His Word, the bible and in the person of Jesus. Hence Paul prays in the letter to the church in Ephesus “May we have power to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge.

Students in Year 3 recently took part in a ‘sleepover’ at school. As well as being fun and exciting occasions, such activities help boys to build confidence, independence and resilience. I congratulate the Year 3 students for embracing the challenge with such enthusiasm. I thank the Year 3 teachers and staff team for organising this valuable opportunity.
As an aside, you may be interested in the following link to an article in The Age that sets out how a school in Victoria assists students in developing resilience. We are also following a number of these strategies through our Building Learning Power framework.

It was wonderful to see so many parents attending the Year 5 Learning Showcase last week. The main focus was how Year 5 students are using iPad technology to enhance their learning. I was particularly pleased to see such high levels of engagement, excellent standards of work as well as boys using technology so responsibly.
As we pass the halfway point of the term it is so encouraging to see all boys actively and purposefully engaged in a broad range of enjoyable learning activities. I look forward to a very productive second half of the term.
Mr Ian Holden
Head of Wyvern House
