Dear Parents

Class and portrait photos for all Wyvern students have been distributed today.  The photos have been processed by Advanced Life Photography.  Included in each pack is a class photo, portrait in various sizes and the opportunity to download the portrait image.  The cost for this pack is $30.00.  This cost will be charged to student’s stage accounts next term.  If you do not wish to purchase the Class and Portrait Photos please return the pack to Wyvern Office by Wednesday, 9^th April, 2014.

Building Learning Power – Our Wyvern Learning Framework

At Wyvern we are deeply committed to equipping our boys with lifelong learning tools that will hold them in good stead into the 21^st century. As part of our learning, we embed lessons with strategies where we teach boys to be more resilient, resourceful, reflective and reciprocal.

Cate Fryda, our Learning Framework Team Leader, will be holding parent information sessions next term to outline how we build your son’s learning power in our classrooms and around the school. Everyone is most welcome to come along and learn more about how learning has changed over the past decade and why these changes are having such positive effects on our boys.

Wyvern’s Own Ironman

On Sunday 23^rd March, Mr Hugh Scott (1S class teacher) competed in the Asia-Pacific Ironman Competition in Melbourne.

The race consisted of a 3.8km swim, 180km cycle and a marathon (42.2km). Although he wasn’t in it to win it, he persevered through the day to finish in 13 hours. The hardest part of the competition was not the actual race day but the days, weeks and months of training leading up to the race. Mr Scott trained 5/6 days a week and it was this perseverance, resilience and preparation that eventually took him over the finish line. Proper diet and adequate rest are very important with these types of races but are also imperative in daily life.

Wyvern Sport

For all Saturday morning sport at Newington Senior School, parents are requested to park off site along the street. The schools onsite car park is maintained for officials, emergency vehicles and staff only. With the winter sport season upon us, the car park area can become very busy early in the morning. P & F News and Events

Hello!

WoW! What a great night! One hundred and eighty-six women attended our ‘Women of Wyvern’ dinner and by all accounts we had a great time. If the energy, chatter and ‘table hopping’ are anything to go by, then it was a perfect night. A huge thank you to the Year 4 Class Parents for the time and energy they put into organising the event: Sandra D’Addona, Dianne Di Cristo, Joanna Natoli and Vanessa Safieh. I also want to extend a special thank you to the Dedes family who took extra special care of our group at their wonderful venue, Dedes on the Wharf.

Our next event is a ‘whole of Wyvern House’ event – the annual Great Garden Party is on tomorrow, Friday 4 April 2014. I do hope you come along and visit all the stalls that parents have been working hard to set up. It’s a lovely way to start celebrating the beginning of the end of Term 1 and the actual beginning of the weekend.

The Mother’s Day gift catalogue is out next week, so don’t forget to have a look and see if there is anything your boy(s) would like to purchase. I must say, Year 5 Class Parents have great taste. There is a great range of gifts at a great range of prices – something for every mum (and I’m not above dropping hints). Order forms are due at the front office by Tuesday of Week 1 – 29 April 2014 and, in the interest of placing orders in time for distribution, late orders can’t be accepted.

In Week Four I invited parents to put forward their views about the federal Department of Communications’ discussion paper about online safety for children. The NSW Parents’ Council made a submission to the Department, supporting the proposal for the creation of a Children’s E-safety Commissioner, a code of conduct for social media sites including swift removal of harmful material and the creation of a specific criminal offence. You can read the submission here. 

Next term,  Mr Pollard, volunteer parent Lisa Reinitz and I hope to reinvigorate volunteer opportunities in the Mary Andrews Garden so stand by for more information. Also, please remember that the keynote presentation at our Term 2 P&F meeting is about the boys’ social and emotional development. Mr Holden will also be providing us with an update on the school’s anti-bullying policy and building plans.

Easter is my favourite time of year and I’m so looking forward to it again (while dreading all the chocolate). I do hope that you enjoy the well-deserved and highly anticipated break after this long term. Fingers crossed for wonderful sunny and crisp Autumn weather, which I expect to find when my family visits our nation’s capital on ANZAC Day.

Faith Matters

Taking Care of Unfinished Business

A young Korean once approached the counter at Trans World Airlines and explained that nine years earlier, when he was 17, he’d travelled on a child’s ticket. Now he wanted to pay the difference. The agent was dumbfounded by his honesty! Billy Kim was 17 when the Korean War broke out. His dad died and his school was bombed, so he joined the American troops, shining boots and washing dishes. When he got an opportunity to go to America, he was thrilled. Landing in San Francisco he thought he’d arrived in heaven! But he had to get from there to his sponsor in Virginia, and he had no money. Afraid he’d get lost, some friends bought him a child’s ticket and pinned a note on his uniform; it read, “To Whom It May Concern, send this boy to Route 1, Box 75, Danville, Virginia.” But the story doesn’t end there. Billy later became pastor of a church of over 10,000 people. Eventually he went on to preside over the Far East Broadcasting Company, and translated for Billy Graham when he spoke to a crowd of over one million people in Seoul, Korea. Not bad for a boy who shined shoes!

God’s choice of leaders has less to do with connections and charisma than with character and conformity to His Word. Restitution is important in God’s economy, after all He sent Jesus to set things right between us and Himself. Do you have any unfinished business that needs attention? Perhaps as we approach Easter it might be an ideal time.

Artist of the Week

K – 2 Artist of the Week

Alexander thought about the idea of a foggy day. He then used a collage technique layering grey and brown card with tracing paper and black crayon overdrawing. Alexander’s carefully finished work successfully portrays Mount Fuji on a foggy day.

Years 3-6 Artist of the Week

Year 3

Students in year 3 were discovering  The Great Barrier Reef National Park. Students created tropical fish out of clay after completing observational drawings in their VAPDs. Students were taken throughout the tricky process of joining the clay, smoothing and making scales using various tools.

These boys were able to glaze their fish using  bright colours as well as enhancing the texture created.

Year 5 

These artists of the week from Year 5 were very difficult to choose from, as all Year 5 surpassed themselves creating works about their personal and cultural identity. Students appreciated “Brett Whiteley’s “Self Portrait in a Studio”, and discovered that the artist had placed various things in his studio that had meant something to him. These objects were painted in his unique style.

Students were taken through a number of explicit drawing activities, as well as some intuitive grey scale painting. Students were asked to bring in objects that could be incorporated into their artworks which reflected their cultural/and or personal identity.

Congratulations to Year 5 for completing a challenging piece that kept them on their toes the whole time.

A Message from Mr Holden

Dear Parents,

As we near the end of this exceptionally busy term I would like to congratulate boys for their hard work, enthusiasm and great commitment to all activities.  The final week of school will require students to draw on their ‘Perseverance Muscles’ as we do expect standards in all areas of school life to remain extremely high.

In the final week of Term 1 students will undertake a range of exciting and engaging activities as we temporarily break away from our normal timetable. Week 11 therefore will be ‘Flexible Learning Week’ where each grade will follow a particular theme.  For example, K-2 boys will be ‘travelling around the world’ to learn about different cultures and countries. For this week our specialist teaching staff will integrate their particular areas of learning by working alongside class teachers.  Please visit the relevant Year Group page on Spaces for further information.

Please note that on Monday 7 April and Wednesday 9 April there will be no sport due to the ‘Flexible Learning Week’. Sport will resume first week back in Term 2.

Also, as part of Flexible Learning Week, on Tuesday 8 April, all Wyvern students will have a Cyber Safety Education day to be run Mrs Emma Clemens, class teachers and our ICT team. Again, further details are on Wyvern Spaces.

On Wednesday 9 April, Year 6 staff and students will travel to Lake Macquarie for a 3 day outdoor education camp. As well as being great fun, such activities help boys to build confidence, team work, independence and resilience. I am sure that all boys will embrace the challenge of camp with enthusiasm. I thank Mr King (Year 6 Team Leader), the Year 6 teachers and wider staff team for organising this valuable opportunity.

At the end of Term 1 Ms Annie Lukins will be leaving Wyvern. Annie has been a wonderfully bright and cheery face for boys and parents and has made a very valuable contribution during her time at Wyvern. We wish Annie every success for her future pathway. At the start of Term 2 I look forward to welcoming Mrs Beth Anderson to the office team in the new position of Data Administrator.

I hope you all enjoy some quality family time over the special Easter break. I look forward to seeing the boys refreshed and ready to launch into Term 2 which commences on 28th April. Note, students need to wear their full winter school uniform – winter blazer, winter shorts, black jumper (optional).
