P & F News and Events

Hello!

That went quickly didn’t it? Admittedly, I had a bad case of Mondayitis this week after taking off the three days for the extra-extra-long weekend and we all struggled to get back into the routine on Monday morning. I do hope everyone had a great break and it seems like most of Sydney caught at least a glimpse of the Royal Family.

Speaking of family, the Mother’s Day breakfast and gift distribution is next week, on Friday morning. I wonder if my hints hit the mark… Plans for the breakfast are going along swimmingly and it will no doubt be another fun morning and great event thanks to the volunteer mums in Year 3 who are organising it. It would be wonderful if most mums could make it – even to pop in for a few minutes before attending to the other responsibilities we have on the day.

Our Term 2 P&F meeting is on Thursday, 15 May, from 7.00pm -8.30pm. We have a very important keynote presentation, which is about the boys’ social and emotional development. Mr Holden will also be providing us with an update on the school’s anti-bullying policy and building plans.

The NSW Parents’ Council Awards for Excellence program recognise the hard work and dedication by principals, parents and parents’ associations in non-government schools. Nominations for 2014 are open and you can view previous recipients of the Awards here. The 2014 Awards will be presented on Friday June 13, 2014 at AGM.

Until next time, be well and happy

Faith Matters

What can I do?

In the light of all the human tragedies around the world it is easy to be overwhelmed and feel as though we can’t do anything because the problems are too great.

During WWII, while visiting a missionary school outside Tibet, Bob Pierce noticed a little girl on the steps. She was malnourished, ragged, and her eyes revealed a lifetime of suffering. When he asked about her, one of the teachers said, “Oh, she sits there every day. She wants to attend school but we’ve no room.” Troubled, Pierce replied, “Can’t you make room for just one more?” The teacher replied, “We’ve made room for ‘just one more’ so often that our food’s stretched to the limit. We’ve got to draw the line somewhere.” Refusing to accept this brutal reality, Pierce exclaimed, “A child needing help shouldn’t be turned away. Why isn’t something being done?” Quietly the teacher picked the little girl up, plunked her in Pierce’s arms, and asked, “What are you going to do about it?” That day Bob Pierce reached into his pocket to buy rice for one little girl and it led to the founding of – World Vision!

When you don’t look at suffering, walking past it becomes easier until eventually you don’t notice. The Bible says that when Jesus, “Saw the crowds, he had compassion on them.” Looking at the needs around you can sometimes be overwhelming but, remember, they come one person at a time. Because you can’t do everything doesn’t mean you can’t do something. Is there anything you can do?

A Message from Mr Holden

A warm welcome back to Term 2; I hope you were able to enjoy a relaxing break. Term 2 promises to be a very active few weeks for boys, parents and teachers.

In week 3 of this term students in Years 3 and Year 5 take part in the National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). Whilst we do see these assessments as an important opportunity to gather useful information about student and school attainment, we also do all we can to maintain a balanced approach in the lead up to the testing period as well as during the tests. We have a very strong view that the tests should ‘shed light’ rather than ‘generate heat’, as such, a balanced and pastorally focused approach is essential.

The first round of winter sport commences this Saturday. I thank all the coaches and support staff for their hard work over the last few weeks of coaching and team allocation. I urge parents to read through the following document that outlines our responsibilities under the IPSHA Code of Conduct.

I thank you in advance for your positive role modelling of essential qualities we aim to instil such as, sportsmanship, camaraderie and respect for others. For any specific questions about our Football, Rugby or Tennis programs please contact :

  • Ian Crook – Newington Director of Football, icrook@newington.nsw.edu.au
  • Ben Marion – Newington Director of Rugby, bmanion@newington.nsw.edu.au
  • Greg Royle – Director of Tennis, groyle@newington.nsw.edu.au

Finally, many congratulations to our Cross Country Team who competed at the IPSHA Cross Country Carnival late last term. Their team and individual performances were superb. Particularly well done to Bililign Robertson who ran second in his age division as well as Nicholas Venetoulis and Fletcher Jakes who also qualified for the CIS carnival.
