Poetry Performance Competition 2014

POETRY PERFORMANCE COMPETITION

Over the next few weeks boys will be preparing to take part in the Poetry Performance Competition, now firmly established as one of Wyvern’s major events.  The competition presents an excellent opportunity for all students in the school to refine and demonstrate their public speaking skills.  All boys will enter the competition and are expected to select a poem, learn it off by heart and then perform it in front of the class.  Finalists will be selected from each class.  Year level finals will then be held to decide the top 3 places in each year group.

Boys are to select the poem they wish to perform. They may seek guidance from their class teacher or from Mrs. Barnes in the library who will have the school’s poetry collection on hand to assist in this process. Note, although the primary focus is on the performance of the poem, we do want boys to access poetry that is age appropriate and of high quality. With this in mind, as an alternative, boys may choose to write their own poem to perform adhering to the guidelines below. Each boy is expected to retain a copy of his poem, as well as provide a copy for his class teacher for approval by the end of week 3.

The poem or excerpt should be of approximately the following lengths:

  • Kindy – between 4-6 simple lines (not nursery rhymes)
  • Year 1 – between 6-10 simple lines
  • Year 2 – between 8-12 lines
  • Years 3 & 4 – between 10-20 lines
  • Years 5 & 6 – between 18-30 lines

Class heats will be held in week 5 of this term with 4 boys from each class being selected to go through to the year level finals to be held in week 6.  All finalists will be presented with highly commended certificates.  We thank the P&F for their kind donation of prizes which will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places.

The following guidelines will be used when judging the boys:

  • Complexity of poem (not length) – 5 points
  • Voice (use/projection, tone, diction, pace) – 15 points
  • Animation (manner, personality, gestures) – 10 points
  • Overall presentation and style – 10 points

No costumes may be used, however, the boys are permitted to use a maximum of 1 prop.  Expression, gestures and body language are to be encouraged.

Faith Matters

Invest in Relationships

Think back to your best moments: your highest highs, your greatest victories, your most daunting obstacles overcome. How many happened to you alone? Very few, right? When you understand that being connected to others is one of life’s greatest joys, you realise that life’s best comes when we invest in solid relationships. Of the people you know, who seems to enjoy life more – the negative, suspicious and anti-social? Hardly! The Scrooges of life don’t enjoy much of anything. Jesus summed life up like this: “Love the Lord…with all your heart…Love your neighbour as yourself.” People who love God and love people on the whole, tend to live joyfully as they experience love in return. If you love God and people you’ll find friends wherever you go. Natural talent, intelligence, a wonderful education – none of these guarantees success. Something else is needed: the sensitivity to understand that we all crave love because God made us in His image as relational beings. So, if you want more out of life, start investing in solid relationships! Peter Morphew Chaplain

A Message from Mr Holden

Dear Parents,

A warm welcome back to Term 3. I do hope you were able to enjoy some valuable family time over the break.

Term 3 looks like it will be just as full and busy for the boys as the previous 2 terms. This is a good thing, as I am sure after the 3 week break, boys (and parents) are eager to get back into school routines.

We have much to look forward to over the coming weeks including our annual Book Week, school camps for Years 4 and 5, our Poetry Performance Competition, an inaugural Shakespeare Festival and a Music Tour to the South Coast for some of our ensemble groups. Further details of all of these events will be available in due course.

We will also be sending out a parent survey to seek your views of Wyvern. We run our parent surveys every two years with well over 75% participation from parents. The feedback is incredibly valuable and assists greatly in the future planning for Wyvern. A copy of the anonymous survey will be emailed to you in week 2 of this term. I very much welcome your input.

Today, in your son’s bag, you should find a ‘Building Learning Power’ fridge magnet. It sets out the main areas and ‘learning muscles’ we are seeking to build at Wyvern. Hopefully this will be a useful reference point or discussion starter as your son talks about his learning at home.

I hope that Term 3 is a very positive and productive one for your son. Please feel free to contact me or my Deputies, Richard Baker (4-6) or Sandra Gray (K-3) if we can assist you in any way.

Ian Holden
Head of Wyvern
