Years 3-6 Athletics Carnival
Wyvern and Lindfield had their combined Years 3-6 Athletics Carnival at SOPAC last week. Here are are a few shots of the boys in action.
The celebration of books during the annual Children’s Book Council of Australia Book Week is a highlight on the Wyvern calendar each year. This year our celebration will take place from Monday August 25th until Friday August 29th.
On Tuesday August 26th, Years 3 & 4 will be involved in an innovative and energetic performance from one of Australia’s most popular children’s poets, Steven Herrick. They will have the opportunity to appreciate the sound and humour of modern poetry and will recognise that this type of poetry is accessible, entertaining and relevant to their lives
On Thursday August 28th, Years 5 & 6 will participate in a session delivered by John Heffernan, an author who has written about thirty books for a range of audiences from early readers to young adults spanning a range of genres including realistic fiction, fantasy and futuristic stories. John will be discussing his latest book entitled Naveed, which is part of a new series, written by excellent Australian authors, called Through My Eyes. This series invites readers to enter the fragile worlds of children living in contemporary war zones. John’s book Naveed tells the story of one of these children who is desperately trying to survive as his family and way of life are being destroyed by war. This book will inspire, challenge and engage young readers whilst creating greater cross cultural understanding and informed empathy.
On Friday August 29th in Wyvern Library, Years K-2 will be entertained with a performance of Puppet Tricksters from Dennis Murphy, a master puppeteer. The Tricksters, who outmanoeuvre bullies and survive on their wits are much loved characters that have appeared in many cultures around the world. Dennis introduces two main puppets; Pulcinella, the Southern Italian puppet and his descendants as well as Arlecchino, Northern Italy’s trickster. The performance will also look at the ‘Trick Marionette’ tradition. Through this experience, the students will identify and explore the morals of stories from different cultures.
As part of our Book Week celebration, there will be a Book Fair in Wyvern Library on Tuesday August 26th, Wednesday August 27th and Thursday August 28th from 7:30am – 9:00am and 2:30pm – 4:00pm each of those days.
If you would prefer, a selection of books written by our visiting authors and the shortlisted books for the CBCA Picture Book category are available for pre-order. Please click on the relevant link to download your order form.

During week 4 Kindy was overrun with Pirates – did you see the skull and cross bones flag flying high? As part of our Phonemic Awareness Program, Kindy continued the long Wyvern tradition of the annual “Pirate, Peter Pan and Popcorn Day.”
The boys all dressed up as pirates with stripes a plenty and even a few parrots and sea gulls were seen on shoulders. We listened to pirate stories, did some pirate themed writing and measured our pirate accessories with blocks. The day was topped off by a popcorn feast whilst watching the most famous Pirate of them all – Peter Pan.
Captains Lewandowski and Vuong wish to thank Mr Holden and Ms Gray for their support on this great day and all the parents for so willingly getting into the spirit and dressing their mini pirates with such style.
Below are some photos of our KL and KV Pirates on Pirate Day!

This Friday marks the end of almost two incredible years spent at Wyvern House, Newington College in the role of Innovative Learning Leader. It has been an absolute joy and privilege working with the staff and students at Wyvern. I have been greatly encouraged by the commitment and passion of the staff team and incredibly impressed by the skill, talent and admirable character of the boys at Wyvern. To reflect on my time at Newington I thought it might be fun to describe what I perceive to be the defining characteristics of a Wyvern boy. I have done this using five illustrations through iPad Apps. If you’re a parent and not familiar with the apps, ask your son and he will be able to describe the illustration for you.
Start Walk/Innovative: Star Walk is an app which allows students to explore the planets and stars in sky above them as if they were astronauts in space. This app is incredibly innovative in the way it transforms the classroom into a place of authentic and real world scientific exploration and discovery. Boys at Wyvern really do embody this sense of innovation. They enjoy pushing the boundaries of learning to make new discoveries and think creatively in all that they do. My role at Wyvern to support innovation has only been possible because of the passion for innovation displayed in the boys.
Lino/Team players: Lino is an app where boys can contribute sticky note posts and images together on a collaborative digital cork board. This illustrates the sense of team spirit that boys at Wyvern always uphold. I have observed this team spirit in sports coaching, ICT club group projects, Tournament of Minds training and classroom group projects. Being a team player is a vital skill in the twenty first century and boys at Wyvern definitely excel in working together to collaborate with others.
Educreations/Reflective: Educreations is an app where students annotate or draw images and text whilst recording a voice narration. This is a great tool for reflecting on learning. Boys at Wyvern are definitely reflective learners. I have loved opportunities teaching ICT and Extension Maths to help students reflect on why and how they are learning. Boys at Wyvern are always eager to reflect on what they have done to deepen their understanding.
PicCollage/Kind: PicCollage is a great digital poster creation app that has a lot of fun stickers boys use to add to their work. Surprisingly boys often choose the love heart and lips stickers. This is a great illustration for the kind heartened spirit which the boys at Wyvern display on a daily basis. I am constantly encouraged by the kindness boys show to others who are unwell or struggling personally. Being on duty in the playground is always a joy, watching the boys interact and play with one another in such a kind way.
iMotionHD/Committed: iMotion HD is an app that allows students to sequence photos to create an animation. To create an interesting and smooth animation students need to have incredible commitment to take hundreds of photos making small movements and adjustments to their subject matter. I really admire the sense of commitment that boys at Wyvern display in all areas of learning. Students seek to perfect each project and commit until it is completed to the best of their ability.
I would like to thank all the staff, students and parents at Wvyern for a wonderful two years. It has been such an incredible opportunity to work with and learn from such a diverse and talented community. I am excited by my new role as Deputy Head of Primary at Emanuel School, but I will very miss being a part of the very special Wyvern community.
Kind regards

The following boys competed in the Sydney Academy of Chess Inter-school Semi Finals on the 1st of August. Ben Nguyen, Adrian Lo, Fallon Fotaras, Hamish Thompson and Kim Lam. The boys played wonderfully to receive third place.
They will now compete in the Finals on the 7th of September. Hamish Thompson played keenly and competitively to receive the best player award for the team. Congratulation boys!

We have recently received the wonderful news that seven teams from Wyvern House have been invited to the finals of the ICT Young Explorers Competition. The ICT Young Explorers Competition is an event that allows students from across Australia to display their best Information and Communication Technology related projects. Their projects will be judged by industry leaders in the field of technology. The competition inspires creativity, collaboration and sharing of ideas and knowledge. It also provides opportunity for the boys to network with other students who are similarly passionate about ICT.
The finals will be held on Saturday the 16th of August at the University of New South Wales. Family and friends are encouraged to attend the event. A photographer, videographer and local media representatives will be present at the competition. Registration opens at 8:00am and the presentations are excepted to finish at 3:00pm. Below are linked the projects created by the boys. We wish them all the best in the finals and commend them on their tremendous efforts.

Each year much thought goes into term dates to ensure the most appropriate balance across the year with a focus on the boys’ learning from Kindergarten to Year 12. This process, conducted by the College’s Senior Executive, takes many hours to ensure all options are considered. By now, you have probably realised that next year we have only a 2 week break between Terms 2 and 3 and a 3 week break between Terms 3 and 4.
Every year the calendar gets challenged by a number of factors. They include when Australia Day lands, when Easter lands, not wanting to start too early when it is hot, not wanting to finish too early at the end of the year with working parents, ensuring state school holidays coincide with our holidays, getting a balance of days between each Semester right (the aim is for 92 in one and 93 in the other), and finally getting maximum time possible for Year 12 for Terms 1, 2 and 3.
This balance is illustrated in the following summary:
2014 – Semester 1: 92 and Semester 2: 93
2015 – Semester 1: 93 and Semester 2: 92 (based on 3 week break between Terms 3 and 4)
2016 – Semester 1: 92 and Semester 2: 93
2017 – Semester 1: 93 and Semester 2: 92
Given the unusual situation of 2015, if we had a 3 week break between Terms 2 and 3 it would have resulted in 88 days in Semester 1 and 97 days in Semester 2 and Year 12 would have effectively lost a week.
It is important to understand that each school has different organisational and learning structures and requirements, thus the difference between other independent schools next year.
Please note that the change in holidays is only for 2015. In 2016 we will return to a 3 week holiday break between Terms 2 and 3.

Check out Dietitian Susie Burrell’s top 10 winter superfoods.
1. Broccoli – exceptionally high in antioxidants
The rule of thumb when it comes to vegetables is the brighter the colour, the better they will be for you. Broccoli is always the dietitians’ favourite vegetable as it contains high levels of key antioxidants as well as a number of vitamins and minerals.
2. Carrots – massive boost of the antioxidant beta carotene
Another brightly coloured vegetable choice, carrots, are packed full of beta carotene, the precursor to Vitamin A, which is why they sometimes bleed all over your hand. Just a carrot a day will keep the doctor away and is a great snack food choice teamed with peanut butter or low fat hommus.
3. Oats – Low GI goodness
The less processed the cereal grain, the better it tends to be for you and this is the case with oats. A single serve each day provides you with a substantial amount of soluble fibre; the type of fibre known to help reduce blood cholesterol levels and oats have one of the lowest GI’s of all grains.
4. Lean red meat (Beef or steak) – The hit of Iron and Zinc you need
Not often considered one of the core superfoods, the rich nutrient density of a humble piece of lean meat means that it ticks a number of boxes from a performance nutrition perspective. Many people eliminate red meat from their diet instead thinking that fish and chicken are healthier options but as long as you choose lean meat, you are getting a more nutrient-dense choice than both chicken and fish.
5. Red capsicum – massive hit of Vitamin C
Red capsicum is a rich source of carotenoids, the group of antioxidants known to play a powerful role in helping to regulate a number of inflammatory pathways in the body. Red capsicums are another great veg snack teamed with hommus or cucumber dip.
6. Kiwi fruit – entire daily requirement of Vitamin C
Did you know that just a single kiwi fruit provides your total daily requirement of Vitamin C? This furry fruit is packed full of nutrition and a great choice of lunchbox filler for kids- try cutting the top of off a kiwi, and teaming it with a spoon for a sweet tasty fruit snack. A kiwi also provides almost 3 grams of fibre and yes you can eat the skin!
7. Lemons and Limes – a little zest
Citrus fruits including lemons and limes are a rich source of Vitamin C. Adding highly acidic foods including lemon juice to cooking does lower the glycaemic index of the food. Low in energy but packed full of nutrition, both lemons and limes can be used as tasty additions to recipes with a Vitamin C boost to boot.
8. Green tea – powerful antioxidant
If there was one type of tea you should add to your tea repertoire it would have to be green tea. Not only is green tea exceptionally high in antioxidants, there is also some evidence to show that it can help with fat burning. If you do not love the flavour of plain green tea, the flavoured varieties are fine and remember, the longer you leave the tea bag in, the better it will be for you.
9. Dark chocolate – it has to be dark!
Chocolate made with a high proportion of cocoa is recommended. Aim for just 20g for roughly 100 calories and 5-7g of fat.
10. Eggs
Eggs are one of the most nutritious foods we can eat. Eggs offer a large number of key nutrients including Zinc, high biological value Protein and Iron as well as more than 20 other vital vitamins and minerals. Enjoy 1-2 eggs a day as a great breakfast choice teamed with wholegrain bread or as a protein boost with wraps or sandwiches through the day. Omelettes or frittatas are also a great alternative to toasted sandwiches or pizza for a quick meal on the go.

Hello!
Please come to our Term 3 P&F meeting, from 7.00pm – 8.30pm tonight. We only have one each term and it’s a great way to catch up on what’s going on at school. We will have a pizza treat for everyone and supervision for children with play on the rooftop playground to save you the angst of organising childcare.
This term Jacqui Van der Velde-Gilbert, Secretary of the NSW Parents’ Council, will come along to discuss what this organisation does for parents and how it operates. Mr Holden will provide an update about school activity, share some news and be open for questions from the floor.
I’m also very excited that the National Children’s Commissioner from the Australian Human Rights Commission can attend our P&F meeting on Thursday, 16 October. Ms Megan Mitchell was formerly the NSW Children’s Commissioner and is the first person appointed to the new national role. Ms Mitchell is currently conducting a national enquiry into intentional self-harm and suicidal behaviour in children and has agreed to present some early findings, tell us about her role and responsibilities as an advocate for children’s rights and take questions from the audience.
K-2 is kicking off our trio of camps on 22-24 August, followed by Years 3-5 on 12-14 September and Year 6 with its own camp closing out the year and celebrating the end of an era from 28-30 November (details will be on SPACES soon).
And of, course, in between these camps is the Father’s Day Breakfast and a small selection of gifts so that the boys can bring something home for dad from school.
Until next time, be well and happy.

Jim Carrey got himself in all sorts of trouble in the movie “Liar, Liar” when he had to speak truth. I suspect in real life if we all treasured integrity as much as we do other things, our world would be a much better place. Nowadays we question the promises of politicians, business can no longer be conducted on a handshake, and some parents have good reason to doubt their children.
In some cases the problem is those people who have little or no regard for the truth. However, more often than not many of our relational problems stem from poor communications. You would expect with the vast array of communication technologies at our disposal good communication would be on the rise but I fear this is not the case.
Undoubtedly, many people can put words together well to express a point of view, to debate, to argue or merely to respond. We are good with putting words into circulation. The question is, “are we equally as good at the other side of communication?’’ Are we expert listeners, as well as being expert wordsmiths? A lot of time and effort is put into teaching us to speak but I doubt that our society has spend an equal amount of energy and dollars on teaching us to listen.
One great piece of advice from the Bible that is, “Be quick to listen and slow to speak.” The old adage is true; God gave us two ears but only one mouth for a very good reason. If you are striving to be a good communicator then you’ll be striving to be a good listener.

Year 5 have been studying ‘Sydney Sun’ by John Olson. Students completed a visible thinking routine, in which they were asked to ‘step inside’ and imagine what the painting might feel like to them. Some students responded with words like ‘violent, hot, happy, powerful and confusing’.
After using more BLP noticing ‘muscles’ the boys began to realise that John Olson was also using lines and shapes within the sun to take the viewer on a visual journey around the city of Sydney.
Students were inspired by this painting and created their own using layers of texture. These textures included paper doilies, crushed up chalk pastels, poster paint, and ink washes. Students also created their ‘journey’ lines by making soft and strong lines with oil pastel.
These are all beautiful artworks and I am proud of Year 5 and all their hard work. Well Done!

As we rapidly approach the mid-way point of the term I am pleased to see Wyvern boys displaying great endeavour and energy in a wide range of activities.
No greater was this evident than at last week’s Years 3 – 6 Athletics Carnival. I was delighted to see all boys so engaged in many athletic disciplines on the day as well as some outstanding individual and team performances. Possibly the most exciting part of the day were our junior and senior relays, where House spirit was keenly demonstrated by all. Many thanks to the many parents who supported the boys on the day and to the staff team for their excellent organisation of the carnival.
Thank you to the many parents (50%) who recently took time to fill in our bi-annual parent survey. Key areas of the school including; learning and teaching, pastoral care, co-curricular program, spirituality, values and ethos, staff and communication were covered. On initial analysis I am delighted to report an exceptionally positive outcome with parent satisfaction exceeding 95% in the vast majority of areas. I thank parents for their clear and candid feedback; this forms an important part of our future planning at Wyvern. I will give more feedback about the survey results at this evening’s P&F meeting.
At the end of this week, Mrs Beth Anderson, in our front office, will be leaving Wyvern due to her family relocating to the UK. Beth has only been with us a short time, but has made a most positive contribution. We wish her every success for her future pathway. I am pleased to announce that Ms Emma Kershaw will join our office team from Monday 18th August. Emma has previously worked in administration roles in schools in NSW and Queensland.
Finally good luck to the Newington Prep Schools’ Athletics Team as they compete in the Newington Invitational Carnival on Saturday at Homebush.
