Artist of the Week

K – 2 Artists of the Week

This week’s Artists of the Week are Oscar Shaw (2H) and Zachary Messis (1P). Oscar thought about how artists can show movement in their art works. He used the idea of repetition to complete a collaged action figure. Zachary remembered information about warm and cool colours and how they can play tricks on your eye. Cool colours look as if they are receding and warm colours look as if they are coming forward. He  made a work demonstrating this effect based on Wassily Kandinsky’s ‘Concentric Circles’ painting.

3 – 6 Artists of the Week

Last term Year 5 completed their masks exploring cultural identity and design. This artwork was an extended process where the students explored masks from different cultures and combined images and designs to make a unique mask. Students used plaster bandage as a sculptural tool and were able to manipulate it into various shapes and designs. They were then able to paint and decorate the mask with other materials. It was interesting to see the differences between the mask they designed in their VAPDs and the masks that eventuated. This problem solving process meant that Year 5 had to adopt a flexible growth mindset when completing this project.

Well done to these boys who are artists of the week:

Noah Sherratt                                             Luca Di Cristo                                    James McGregor

Nicholas Venetoulis

Proposed Uniform Change – Tracksuit

In order to help with planning uniform purchases in the future, please be advised that the Wyvern tracksuit will change to be in line with the Senior school tracksuit.  As of mid Term 3, new tracksuits will be available for purchase in the Uniform Shop. There will be an 18 month ‘change over’ period where either tracksuit may be worn. From the commencement of 2017, it will be compulsory to wear the new tracksuit.

Term Dates 2015

Each year much thought goes into term dates to ensure the most appropriate balance across the year with a focus on the boys’ learning from Kindergarten to Year 12. This process, conducted by the College’s Senior Executive, takes many hours to ensure all options are considered. By now, you have probably realised that next year we have only a 2 week break between Terms 2 and 3 and a 3 week break between Terms 3 and 4.

Every year the calendar gets challenged by a number of factors. They include when Australia Day lands, when Easter lands, not wanting to start too early when it is hot, not wanting to finish too early at the end of the year with working parents, ensuring state school holidays coincide with our holidays, getting a balance of days between each Semester right (the aim is for 92 in one and 93 in the other), and finally getting maximum time possible for Year 12 for Terms 1, 2 and 3.

This balance is illustrated in the following summary:

2014 – Semester 1: 92 and Semester 2: 93

2015 – Semester 1: 93 and Semester 2: 92 (based on 3 week break between Terms 3 and 4)

2016 – Semester 1: 92 and Semester 2: 93

2017 – Semester 1: 93 and Semester 2: 92

Given the unusual situation of 2015, if we had a 3 week break between Terms 2 and 3 it would have resulted in 88 days in Semester 1 and 97 days in Semester 2 and Year 12 would have effectively lost a week.

It is important to understand that each school has different organisational and learning structures and requirements, thus the difference between other independent schools next year.

Please note that the change in holidays is only for 2015.  In 2016 we will return to a 3 week holiday break between Terms 2 and 3.

Faith Matters

With yet another Greek financial crisis and recent tumbling markets in China in the news, some people are finding it difficult to discern in what to invest. But really it’s a no-brainer.

Think back to your best moments: your highest highs, your greatest victories, your most daunting obstacles overcome. How many happened to you alone? Very few, right? When you understand that being connected to others is one of life’s greatest joys, you realise that life’s best comes when we invest in solid relationships. Of the people you know, who seems to enjoy life more – the negative, suspicious and anti-social? Hardly! The Scrooges of life don’t enjoy much of anything.

Jesus summed life up like this: “Love the Lord…with all your heart…Love your neighbour as yourself.” People who love God and love people on the whole, tend to live joyfully as they experience love in return. If you love God and people you’ll find friends wherever you go. And you’ll get further in life too!

Natural talent, intelligence, a wonderful education – none of these guarantees success. Something else is needed: the sensitivity to understand that we all crave love because God made us in his image as relational beings. So, if you want more out of life, start investing in even more deep relationships!

A Message from Mr Holden

Welcome back to Term 3. I hope you were able to enjoy some ‘down time’ over this recent break. This term is again a very full one with many exciting learning activities and events to look forward to including our Biannual Art Exhibition, Book Week, an inaugural Wyvern Maths Week and the Stage 3 Musical which this year is ‘The Pirates of Penzance’. A detailed Term 3 calendar is included in this newsletter, plus we will provide regular updates about all events via Spaces.

Disruption to Parking in Surrounding Streets of Wyvern

Marrickville Council has advised they will commence constructing a replacement retaining wall in Montague Gardens commencing next week for approximately 4-5 weeks.  Parking on Merchant and Cambridge Street will be affected. Please be considerate of our neighbours during this time and ensure you leave adequate time to find alternative parking when delivering and picking up your son from school. Your consideration is greatly appreciated.

Finally, well done to a number of Wyvern boys who competed in the annual Sydney Inter-schools’ Snowsports Championships at Thredbo over the recent break. Special congratulations to Flynn Gannon who achieved gold medals for both of his snowboarding events, Will Rumi who finished 5th in the Snowboard Giant Slalom and also to Toby Phillips who along with these boys has qualified for the NSW State Championships to be held in August.
