Allison Tait – Author Talk at Wyvern for Year 5 Students

On Tuesday,17th November Allison Tait will be visiting Wyvern to speak to the Year 5 students. Allison Tait grew up dreaming of world domination. Unfortunately, at the time there were only two sisters and a long-suffering brother to practise on … and parents who didn’t look kindly upon sword fights, plank-walking or thumbscrews. But dreams don’t die and The Mapmaker Chronicles, the author’s first series of books for children, aged 10 and up is the result.

Allison lives in country New South Wales with a family, a garden and four goldfish. Alison writes fiction and non-fiction for adults under another name.

If you wish to purchase these books, please complete this order form and return it to the Library by Friday 13th November.

Please feel free to donate wrapping paper for our centre staff to wrap presents once allocated.

Artists of the Week

K – 2 Artists of the Week

This week’s Artists of the Week are Gus Klineberg (KB) and Nicholas Antipas (2H).

Gus used bark very carefully instead of paper to draw on, telling the Aboriginal story of the Milky Way.

Nicholas was able to experiment with filter paper, texta and water to create a beautiful Koi wind puppet.

Years 3 – 6 Artists of the Week

Year 4

Year 4 completed their beautiful butterfly/insect block prints, making 2 prints from the one ‘block’. You can see these exciting prints on level 1, near the Year 4 classrooms.

Well done to Zachary Nguyen for his amazing printing making skills.

Year 3

Year 3 have studied New Year’s Eve as part of their Celebration unit. Oscar McLeod’s New Year’s Eve ‘Fireworks’ over Sydney Harbour Bridge is an exceptional chalk pastel drawing.

Well Done Oscar.

Pyrmont Ultimo Landcare Project

The Kitchen Garden Club has been running at Wyvern for five years. During Friday lunchtimes, boys volunteer their time and effort to help grow a whole range of fruits, vegetables, spices and herbs.  It was members of this club that had the opportunity to share their green fingers with the Pyrmont Ultimo Landcare Project. This volunteer group is led by Mary Mortimer and work adjacent to the light rail line at the Wentworth Park Light Rail stop.

The site used to be rundown and covered in weeds and rubbish. Over the time that the landcare group have worked there, the space has been transformed into a pleasant green space within a densely populated urban area.

On a Wednesday morning late in October, ten Wyvern boys left their pencil cases behind to roll their sleeves up and offer their help. With trowels in hand, the boys took on the task of planting indigenous plants alongside the landcare volunteers. The Wyvern boys chatted happily with the volunteers as they dug holes, planted and watered the plants, enjoying the opportunity to be outside and get their hands dirty. This was a chance for the boys to be involved in service learning and look to help those in the community around us. We hope that this is the start of a relationship that can continue into the future.  Next time you are on the light rail and pass through Wentworth Park, we hope you too enjoy the view.

NSW Government Roll-out of School Opal Card

SCHOOL STUDENT TRANSPORT SCHEME (SSTS) APPLICATIONS GO ONLINE FROM 2 NOVEMBER

From 2 November 2015, a new online SSTS application process is being introduced for schools within the Opal network, coinciding with the introduction of the School Opal card.

Schools outside the Opal network should continue to process the existing blue SSTS application forms and send them to the appropriate transport operators.

BENEFITS FOR SCHOOLS

Automatic Renewal
Most parents, guardians and students won’t need to apply for a School Opal card if they have already been given a school student travel pass for the current year.

School Opal cards which are being automatically renewed will be sent to the student’s school at the beginning of the new school year in 2016.

School Opal cards applied for using the new online process will sent to the student’s nominated address ready for term one 2016.

Students should use the new form if they:

  • are just starting school and have not had a pass for travel before
  • are in moving from year 2 to 3 or Year 6 to 7
  • are changing schools or campus, including going between primary and secondary school
  • or, if their personal details have changed (e.g. address)

Online Application Form
Schools no longer need to stock the SSTS application form.

Online SSTS Eligibility Assessment
The new online application portal will automatically assess SSTS eligibility based on distance rules.

Less Paperwork
Schools only need to endorse a single application form for each student’s eligible home address (and one for each eligible address in shared custody arrangements) and send it to Transport for NSW

More Efficient Distribution
All new applications for 2016 travel will be sent directly to the student’s nominated address.

Simplified Replacement
To order a new School Opal card, students go direct to transportnsw.info/school-students or call 131 500.

Kind regards

Faith Matters

Al had a hard time in school. He never seemed to be able to keep up. When his teacher called him ‘Addled’ his mother immediately withdrew him from school to teach him at home. The teacher thought he couldn’t learn, but Al’s mother had a different opinion- she was a nurturer; she believed in him. She schooled him at home, and each time he failed she gave him hope and encouraged him to keep trying.

Whatever happened to Al? Well, eventually he grew up and became an inventor holding more than 1000 patents, including the phonograph and the first electric light bulb. You guessed it – his name was Thomas Alva Edison. Wow! When people have love and hope, there’s no telling how far they can go! Solomon writes: “Pleasant words are…healing.” So, how about your words? Do they build up or tear down? How do people feel when they’re around you? Do they feel small and insignificant, or do they leave you believing in themselves and realising what they can become?

With God every weed is a potential rose. His book, the Bible, is the ultimate book of hope. It tells us that Jonah got a second chance to go back to Nineveh and the whole city turned to God ( Jonah 3:1); that the Prodigal Son came back from a wasted life and was restored to his family ( Luke 15:11) and many other similar stories. Do you want to become great in God’s Kingdom? Become an encourager, a nurturer, and a restorer!

A Message from Mr Holden

Prize Giving

This year’s Annual Wyvern Prize Giving for students in Years 3 – 6 will take place in Centenary Hall on Tuesday 8 December at 9:00am. Students are asked to meet their class teachers at the Senior School outside the Music Centre (next to Centenary Hall) no later than 8:30am wearing their summer uniform minus black cap. Following Prize Giving we invite parents and students to join Wyvern staff for morning tea in the AJ courtyard area at the very end of the driveway.

Whilst we take the opportunity to award a number of prizes for outstanding achievement (categories listed below), Prize Giving is primarily an opportunity for the Wyvern community to mark and celebrate a most positive year. As such, this event is a compulsory activity for all students in Years 3-6. Although the final school day for students in K – 2 is Monday 7 December, K – 2 families are most welcome to attend Prize Giving. The end of the ceremony marks the official start of the summer break.

I thank the Wyvern P&F for organising the Great Garden Party last Friday. Thankfully the rain held off long enough for boys and parents to thoroughly enjoy the event.

On Wednesday we commemorated Remembrance Day in a special Chapel service. The concept of Remembrance Day can be a difficult one for the younger generation to grasp as inevitably, over time, our connection to these immensely significant events starts to fade. But this is precisely the reason why pausing to reflect on the vital roles our service men and women have played in past conflicts it is so important. I was extremely impressed with the respectful and dignified manner in which our boys’ honoured those who have sacrificed so much.
