Change to the Three-Digit Route Numbers of School Special Bus Services to Newington

Dear Parents,

From the start of Term 1 2016, most School Special bus services will be renumbered to eliminate any duplication of route numbers that may have caused confusion to students in the past.

Please note these changes do not impact the level of service provided to your school or the route taken by these services. The only change is to the three-digit route number of these services.

Detailed information regarding these changes is available on the Sydney Buses website via the following link:

Wyvern Christmas Tree – Barnardos Gifts for Kids

Every Child Deserves To Feel The Joy, Warmth And Happiness Of Christmas!

This year we are supporting Barnardos Australia Gifts for Kids to reach their goal of collecting a gift for every child in care this Christmas. Thousands of Australian children suffer from family violence and homelessness and Christmas can be a sad time for them. That’s why our school is helping Barnardos Australia and together we can make a big difference and bring smiles to children in need this Christmas.

If you would like to donate online please go to barnardos.org.au/giftsforkids

Each year Barnardos struggle to receive gifts for infants/toddlers aged between 0 – 2 years and teenagers aged between 13 – 18 years.

Some suggestions of infants/toddlers appropriate gifts for 0 – 2 years are:

  • Building blocks
  • Sensory toys
  • Push and pull toys
  • Baby clothes
  • Picture books
  • Toy instruments
  • Unbreakable mirrors
  • Puzzles and train sets
  • Bath toys – great also for playing with on the beach!

Some suggestions of teenage appropriate gifts for 13 – 18 years are:

  • sporting equipment (footballs, cricket set, soccer balls)
  • baseball caps
  • girls make-up
  • perfume
  • beach towels
  • jewellery
  • skin care products
  • books/novels
  • Gift vouchers are the easiest for this age group, examples of appropriate gift vouchers include vouchers from – Rebel Sport, itunes, JB-Hi Fi, Hoyts Cinemas and Sports Girl

By supporting Barnardos Gifts you are helping make a difference to these children at Christmas Time.

Why We Ask For Unwrapped Gifts

Please do NOT wrap gifts as we need to view the gifts to ensure their safety and to allocate gifts according to a child’s age, gender and individual circumstances.

Please feel free to donate wrapping paper for our centre staff to wrap presents once allocated.

NSW Government Roll-out of School Opal Card

SCHOOL STUDENT TRANSPORT SCHEME (SSTS) APPLICATIONS GO ONLINE FROM 2 NOVEMBER

From 2 November 2015, a new online SSTS application process is being introduced for schools within the Opal network, coinciding with the introduction of the School Opal card.

Schools outside the Opal network should continue to process the existing blue SSTS application forms and send them to the appropriate transport operators.

BENEFITS FOR SCHOOLS

Automatic Renewal
Most parents, guardians and students won’t need to apply for a School Opal card if they have already been given a school student travel pass for the current year.

School Opal cards which are being automatically renewed will be sent to the student’s school at the beginning of the new school year in 2016.

School Opal cards applied for using the new online process will sent to the student’s nominated address ready for term one 2016.

Students should use the new form if they:

  • are just starting school and have not had a pass for travel before
  • are in moving from year 2 to 3 or Year 6 to 7
  • are changing schools or campus, including going between primary and secondary school
  • or, if their personal details have changed (e.g. address)

Online Application Form
Schools no longer need to stock the SSTS application form.

Online SSTS Eligibility Assessment
The new online application portal will automatically assess SSTS eligibility based on distance rules.

Less Paperwork
Schools only need to endorse a single application form for each student’s eligible home address (and one for each eligible address in shared custody arrangements) and send it to Transport for NSW

More Efficient Distribution
All new applications for 2016 travel will be sent directly to the student’s nominated address.

Simplified Replacement
To order a new School Opal card, students go direct to transportnsw.info/school-students or call 131 500.

A Message from Mr Holden

As we near the end of the term, I reflect on a very busy few weeks that have seen Wyvern students involved in an array of exciting and challenging activities. No doubt, the boys are looking forward to their summer holiday break.

Before we get there we have some important events to enjoy including the Year 6 Evening of Eminence this afternoon, Year 6 Graduation on Monday evening, Kindy, Year 1 and Year 2 end of year presentations next week and finally our Annual Prize Giving Ceremony (Year 3-6) on Tuesday 8 December. Prize Giving is primarily an occasion to celebrate the very good contribution of all of our boys across the year. We also acknowledge a number of boys who have excelled in a range of pursuits. Decision making around award recipients can be excruciatingly difficult for staff, but we do seek to be fair, transparent and ultimately reward effort. Our key message to the boys at this time is that no one is entitled to receive an award. If they are lucky enough to do so, we expect them to be proud but humble. For those who are disappointed, we encourage them to be generous in acknowledging the achievements of their peers.

At this time of the term we often say good bye to staff who will be moving on to new opportunities. At the end of this year we farewell Mrs Cate Fryda, our BLP leader, who is moving to the UK to pursue school leadership opportunities. Mrs Joanna Ryan, Year 5 Class teacher is relocating to Perth to be closer to family, Mrs Debbie Bourke our K-2 Art teacher will be retiring after 6 years at Wyvern. Ms Kate Green who will be broadening her teaching experience with a move to Ascham School for girls. I acknowledge the wonderful contribution that Cate, Joanna, Debbie and Kate have made to Wyvern students and parents and wish them every success in their future pathways. Mrs Caoimhe McMillan (Music and K-2 French) will take a 12 month period of maternity leave in 2016; we wish her well as she prepares for her exiting new arrival. Mr David King (Year 6 Team Leader) will be temporarily moving to the Senior School in 2016 as Acting Head of Year 7, a well-deserved promotion.  We look forward to Mr King and Ms McMillan returning to Wyvern in 2017.

Students will have the chance to meet their 2016 class teachers next Thursday. Note, you will receive a letter informing you about your son’s class teacher early next week. The class allocation process at Wyvern is exceptionally detailed and thorough involving the teachers, the boys plus the opportunity for parental input. Nonetheless with all change comes challenge (a good thing) and there will be a mix of excitement and nervousness as we approach “One Up” morning. My advice and plea to parents is to communicate a positive message to your son about their 2016 teacher. We are very fortunate to have such high calibre staff who are excited about the prospect of teaching your sons next year.

Congratulations to Christopher Mina who recently represented NSW at the Pacific School Games in Adelaide. He performed superbly winning a silver medal in the 200m Medley Relay and then came 4th in the individual butterly attaining a PB. See the Sport Newsletter for further details.

Finally, as this will be the last newsletter of the year, I thank the parent community for such wonderful support expressed in so many different ways. I wish you all a wonderful summer break and a restful and family focussed festive season.

Ian Holden
Head of Wyvern House
