Lucy Hawking, author and journalist, is visiting Australia to host an evening talk at the Opera House on April 26th where her father Stephen Hawking will appear live by video link from Cambridge University. However, on Thursday April 23rd, we will welcome Lucy Hawking to Wyvern! Lucy will speak to the boys in Years 4 to 6 about her George Greenby series of books which she co-wrote with her father. These adventure stories, featuring George Greenby, aim to explain complex science to readers through dramatic storytelling. If you wish to purchase these books, please complete this order form and return it to the Library by Monday April 20th.

Hello!
WoW! What a great night! Nearly two hundred mums attended our ‘Women of Wyvern’ dinner and by all accounts – and the energy in the room – we had a great time! Even my three-minute welcome speech seemed to take up too much time for mums wanting to get the evening started. It was indeed wonderful to see everyone having a lovely evening with friends and even making new friends.
I’d like to say a huge thank you to Sally Hassen (Year 4 and 6) who put such a great effort into organising the evening and making it as successful as it was. I also want to extend a special thank you to the Dedes family who took extra special care of our group at their wonderful venue, Dedes on the Wharf. We’ve already started planning for next year and I’m very excited about our plans!
The Mother’s Day gift catalogue is out and there is a great selection of gifts ranging from $15 to $65. Definitely something for everyone and I have got my eye on a few things so had better get those hints dropped soon. The items will be on display in the front office window, which is very handy for selecting colours and scents (and getting, or hinting about, the right gift!). Order forms are due at the front office by Monday, 27 April 2015 and, in the interest of placing orders in time for distribution, late orders can’t be accepted.
This year, our Mother’s Day breakfast will again take place on the Friday morning before Mother’s Day, which is 8 May. This year the breakfast ends with the beginning of The Literature Festival 2015 Book Character Parade – two birds one stone and all that. Every student who dresses up in a costume to support the ‘Room to Read’ organisation will receive a small prize provided by the P&F.
Finally, please note that the keynote presentation at our Term 2 P&F meeting is about Wyvern’s gifted and talented program, and will be presented by Mr Baker and Mr Brayley. Mr Holden will also give us an update about the new Wyvern Flexible Learning Space and other initiatives in the school.
Easter is my favourite time of year and I’m so looking forward to it. Enjoy the break and hopefully wonderful sunny and crisp autumn weather, which I expect to find down the coast.
Until next time, be well and happy

Each year much thought goes into term dates to ensure the most appropriate balance across the year with a focus on the boys’ learning from Kindergarten to Year 12. This process, conducted by the College’s Senior Executive, takes many hours to ensure all options are considered. By now, you have probably realised that next year we have only a 2 week break between Terms 2 and 3 and a 3 week break between Terms 3 and 4.
Every year the calendar gets challenged by a number of factors. They include when Australia Day lands, when Easter lands, not wanting to start too early when it is hot, not wanting to finish too early at the end of the year with working parents, ensuring state school holidays coincide with our holidays, getting a balance of days between each Semester right (the aim is for 92 in one and 93 in the other), and finally getting maximum time possible for Year 12 for Terms 1, 2 and 3.
This balance is illustrated in the following summary:
2014 – Semester 1: 92 and Semester 2: 93
2015 – Semester 1: 93 and Semester 2: 92 (based on 3 week break between Terms 3 and 4)
2016 – Semester 1: 92 and Semester 2: 93
2017 – Semester 1: 93 and Semester 2: 92
Given the unusual situation of 2015, if we had a 3 week break between Terms 2 and 3 it would have resulted in 88 days in Semester 1 and 97 days in Semester 2 and Year 12 would have effectively lost a week.
It is important to understand that each school has different organisational and learning structures and requirements, thus the difference between other independent schools next year.
Please note that the change in holidays is only for 2015. In 2016 we will return to a 3 week holiday break between Terms 2 and 3.

This week’s Artists of the Week are Edward Armstrong-Bailey (1W) and Charles Auld (1W). Edward cut, collaged and layered tracing paper and black and brown paper to give the idea of Mt Fuji on a foggy day. Charles experimented with the watercolour techniques of ‘painting over wet paper, dry brush and bleeding’ as well light and dark lines, to paint a scene with Mt Fuji. Fantastic effort from both Year 1 boys.

Year 3 were lucky enough to hold a showcase last week. Students had been looking at lines and shapes in John Olsen’s work. After observing a variety of his works based on frogs, students completed a brush and ink work that imitated the watery lines and exaggerated shapes of his frogs. Well done to all Year 3 for their hard work making this painting.
Callum Claringbold Brown 3G
Olivier Maraldo 3G
Year 4 completed their ‘Can Cars’ based around their study of installation artist, Simryn Gill. Students observed car logos, numbers, and designs to create interesting and unique machines.
James Gestakovski 4V
Year 5 completed their ‘Identity and Pop Art’ mashups last week. This was a long project with many small parts that made up the whole. Well done to the new boys who have been listening, observing and managing their way around the art classroom.

After an exceptionally busy 10 weeks, Term 1 will come to a close at the end of the school day today. In many ways the first term is the most important time of the school year. Expectations are set, routines established and relationships between teachers and students are formed. I have been very pleased to see these elements combine, which has meant that productive and enjoyable learning has been foremost in all we do at Wyvern.
I thank parents who have made time in your busy schedules to attend our Year Group Learning Showcases this term. We really enjoy showing your sons in action and in turn the boys benefit hugely from the interest you show in their learning.
I am delighted to mention some exceptional sporting achievements by some of our students in recent weeks. Gaelen Dorigo and Joe-Reilly Makovec have been selected to represent the Independent Primary School’s Association Football team. Joel Zipeure and Christopher Mina recently swam at the NSWPSSA Swimming Championships, a great achievement in its own right. Both boys performed admirably. Christopher excelled in his final of the butterfly narrowly missing out on the title to come a very close second place. He will now compete in the Primary National Championships in May. Bili Robertson topped a positive few weeks by winning the IPSHA Cross Country titles last weekend at The Kings School. He will now go on to compete at the CIS Championships in June, along with Henry Isherwood and Matthew Torrible who also ran exceptionally well at Kings.
At the end of this term Mrs Andrea Turner, who works as a teacher’s aide in our Learning Enhancement team, will leave Wyvern to pursue full time study. Andrea’s connections with Wyvern go back very many years, both as a staff member and parent and she has made a wonderful contribution in a number of different roles. We wish Andrea every success. I am pleased to announce that Mr Niall Martin, who recently completed a Masters in Primary Education, will join the Learning Enhancement team from the start of Term 2.
The Easter break is a wonderful opportunity for reflection, relaxation and preparation for another exciting term. I do hope you are all able to enjoy some quality family time. I look forward to seeing students return on Monday 20th April in their winter uniform.
Ian Holden
Head of Wyvern House
