Kindergarten 2016
It was a heart-warming and emotional welcome for new Kindergarten boys and their families at Wyvern Preparatory on Friday 29th January. Many parents joined us for the morning to see their sons through their first hours at school.
We extend our welcome and best wishes to all Wyvern families for a happy and rewarding 2016!

Back to School Opal Card
From 27th January 2016, eligible school students can ‘tap’ into Opal with the School Opal card – the smarter way to travel to and from school.
Your consignment of School Opal cards for students who had a pass in 2015, and are eligible for travel in 2016 under the School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS), should arrive from 27 January 2016.
Other eligible students, including new applicants and students changing school or campuses, updating their personal details, or going from year 2 to 3 or year 6 to 7, who have already applied or who still need to apply, will have their School Opal cards posted to their home address in the first two weeks of term one 2016.
You can contact 131 500 or concessions@transport.nsw.gov.au for more information or if your cards don’t arrive within the first two weeks.
Parents or guardians, and students who are eligible for SSTS travel and have not already received a card, should be directed to apply online at transportnsw.info/school-students
Please endorse the application forms and return these to Transport for NSW within the first two weeks of term to ensure eligible students can get their School Opal cards as quickly as possible. Remember: you are only required to endorse the enrolment status, grade and home address of the student. You are not required to endorse the nominated transport mode and operator, as Transport for NSW is responsible for managing SSTS compliance.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT TRAVELLING WITH OPAL:
- The School Opal card is only for travel to and from school on approved modes of public transport.
- The School Opal card doesn’t cover travel to activities away from school, such as, after school care, sport and school excursions.
- Remember: A grace period applies at the start of each new school year, where school students who have been approved for SSTS travel can travel without a valid pass while new passes are being issued. Students must be in school uniform or be able to provide evidence (such as a school ID or school books) that they are travelling to or from school during this time.
- Students should use a Child/Youth Opal card for travel after hours, on weekends, during school holidays or activities away from school.
After two weeks of receiving your School Opal cards, please return any cards unable to be issued to students to:

BEHAVIOUR MATTERS Please remind students that free travel is a privilege that can be taken away if official Codes of Conduct aren’t followed. In summary, students should remember to:

Faith Matters
The College motto is IN FIDE SCIENTIUM which is Latin for “to faith add knowledge”. It is interested that the founders of our College opted for this as our motto. Shouldn’t it be … to knowledge add faith? And shouldn’t faith be optional?
Our founding father were indeed wise. Faith comes first, not only because faith matters. Faith comes first because it is acknowledged that we all have faith, we all express faith in various things and people each day. Faith of course, is more than just believing. Faith is our acted out beliefs. Similarly, knowledge is merely wisdom. The accumulation of information/knowledge can be useless. Knowledge misapplied helps no-one and is often unproductive. Wisdom on the other hand is applied knowledge in the face of the rigours of life. Wisdom is faith and knowledge put into the everyday practice of living.
Here at Newington we want to encourage and assist our boys to be more than knowledgeable. We want them to become wise men of substance. At the start of a new school year it is good to remind ourselves “to faith add knowledge”.
(Our motto is taken from the Bible. See 2Peter 1:5-8 for a fuller context.)

A Message from Mr Holden
Dear Parents,
I suspect memories of the relaxed summer break have now well and truly faded! The boys have certainly hit the ground running in their first few days of the school year and it has been very pleasing to feel a great buzz of excited learning in the Wyvern classrooms this week. Those boys new to Wyvern seem to have settled in extremely well and should be congratulated for their concerted efforts to make new friends and to form positive connections with their teachers.
I would like to inform you of a new initiative we are running this year for parents. Twice each term Ms Sandra Gray, Deputy (K-3) and Mr Richard Baker, Deputy (4-6) will host parent information sessions on a range of topics as well as answer any questions parents may have about issues that relate to their portfolios. The first of the information sessions will be on Friday 4th March from 8:45am to 9:45am to be held in the Wyvern Library, when Mr Baker and Ms Gray will talk about the role of the Deputy. I will also be available to answer any questions.
Parent Teacher Meetings in 2016
Mid-way through this term there will be an opportunity for you to book a meeting with your son’s teachers, primarily with the aim to discuss and set learning targets for the year. An email invitation will be sent out in Week 4 for you to book your first meeting time for either Tuesday 1 March, 3:30pm – 6:30pm or Thursday 3 March, 3:30pm – 6:30pm.
Before School Supervision
A reminder that supervision of students starts from 8:00am every day. I request for boys not to arrive at school before this time. The only exceptions to this are for those boys who attend a school run activity or whose school bus arrives earlier than 8:00am. For their safety, we must ensure all boys are supervised at all times, as such, any boys who do arrive before 8.00am will be required to attend OSH club’s before school care service. Please use the link for further details about OSH club hours and fees.
Finally, I look forward to seeing many of you at the P and F Welcome Cocktail Party tomorrow evening. I thank the P and F executive for their generosity in hosting this event.
Mr Ian Holden
