Art Car Incursion for Year 4

Year 4 were lucky to have some exciting cars visiting this term. The boys have been engaged in drawings for an ‘Art Car’, based on the BMW Art car series. Various renowned artists painted BMW cars in their own particular style.

The boys made observational drawings, so as to make an Art Car of their own. This topic links in nicely to their science topic of ‘Smooth Moves’. The boys also viewed a video on Ken Done and his approach to how he decorated his ‘Art Car’. He chose colours that were like parrots and parrot fish, bright ‘fast’ colours that would help the car ‘fly’.

Keep an eye out in the next couple of weeks for the boys’ work near the Year 4 classrooms.

Year 1 Fire Brigade Visit

To kick off our investigations into People Who Help us in the Community Year 1 had a visit from the Newtown Fire Brigade last week.  The boys got to use the fire hose and try on the heavy jacket the fire fighters wear  when attending a fire.  There were lots of opportunities to ask questions and we even learned how to Stop, Drop and Roll if our clothes were alight.  We saw some video of how smoke travels and we know why we need to Get Down Low and Go go go if we ever find ourselves in danger.

Artist of the Week

K – 2 Artist of the Week

Christian Knoph – 2W

Christian worked in charcoal to explore figurative drawing. He arranged a mannequin into different poses and used his noticing muscle to draw directly from observation. Christian demonstrated an excellent understanding of proportion and was able to show form by carefully smudging the charcoal lines with his finger. Fantastic work, Christian.

Faith Matters

Thanks for the fleas!

Corrie Ten Boom a Dutch woman, in The Hiding Place relates an incident that taught her always to be thankful. She and her sister Betsy, had been transferred to the worst German prison camp they seen yet, Ravensbruck. On entering the barracks, they found them extremely over-crowded and flea-infested. Fourteen hundred prisoners were crammed into a barracks designed to sleep four hundred people.

That morning they had read a section in the Bible from 1 Thessalonians that had reminded them to rejoice always, pray constantly and give thanks in ALL circumstances. Betsy told Corrie to stop and give thanks to God for every detail of their new living quarters. Corrie at first flatly refused to give thanks for the fleas! However, Betsy persisted, and Corrie finally succumbed to her pleadings. During the ensuing months that they spent in the torturous conditions in the camp, they were surprise to find how much freedom they had each evening in the barracks. They were able to study the Bible and conduct prayer meetings without any interference from the guards. It was not until several months later that they learned the reason the guards would not enter the barracks was because of the fleas!

A Message from Mr Holden

Swimming Carnival

It was terrific to see wonderful team spirit and camaraderie on display at the very successful Swimming Carnival last week. There were many impressive individual and team performances as well as great determination and effort shown by all boys. Congratulations to the winners of the House competition which this year was Williams. I also thank the many parents who attended for their wonderful support. The staff team, ably led by Mr Brunton, Mr Martin and  Mr Wilson, ensured the day ran smoothly; my thanks to them.

Camp Out

Last week boys from Year 5 had their ‘Camp-Out’ at the Senior School campus. We are particularly grateful to a number of Senior Students who assisted the Wyvern boys with team building activities and camp site set up. Year 3 will enjoy a sleepover at Wyvern next week. The intention of such activities is to build greater independence and to assist with the integration of our new intake of students with their cohort. I hope all gain much from the experience.

Parent Volunteers

I thank and acknowledge the tremendous work that parent volunteers are undertaking in the school. Whether in the Uniform Shop, Canteen, assisting with excursions or in classrooms, or by joining the P&F executive team, parents who give so generously of their time are adding much value to our school community. I remind all parents that our volunteers are combining busy agendas to help out; please bear this in mind in your interactions with them. As with all other members of the school community we do expect them to be afforded respect and consideration. Please also consider getting involved as a volunteer at the school, even if you can only commit on an adhoc basis. Parents who are volunteers feel a strong connection with the school and their sons. Please contact Natalie Mina, our P&F President at natalie.mina@accenture.com if you would like any further information about our volunteering opportunities.
