Year 3 Sleepover 2016
All of Year 3 enjoyed their annual Sleepover last week on Thursday and Friday, 25th and 26th February. Who wouldn’t enjoy it, with swimming, cricket, dancing, empty playgrounds, afternoon tea, morning tea, pizza, ice blocks and a movie on the agenda?
Although the day was set to be a scorcher with the mercury rising in the late 30’s, we found a way to endure it by hitting the pool at the Senior School and having a relaxing afternoon tea. Following this, many team building activities were arranged for the boys to rotate and work through – aimed at establishing and maintaining quality and lasting relationships.
With an appetite, the boys (and teachers) lined up to attempt to make a dent in the pizza stack. We are unsure whether it was the food coma brought on from the pizza, or the exhausting and tiring activities that was the catalyst, but it didn’t take long for the majority of the boys to fall asleep – some before the movie had even started.
After packing up their own beds and bags in the morning, the boys were treated to a healthy breakfast before school officially began for the day.
The boys and their parents should be very proud of the behaviour and manners of the boys as they supported each other and the staff during the event.
An enormous thank you to all the staff who volunteered over the 2 days to make the 2016 Year 3 Sleepover a huge success, providing us all with many memories! A special mention to Miss Brown, Mr MacRae, Mr Jensen and Mr Jesserun who stayed the night.

Artist of the Week
K – 2 Artist of the Week
Max Moore 1P
Max worked in oil pastel and watercolour to explore a creative representation of the sun. He made excellent use of a variety of lines to indicate the movement of light and heat. Max demonstrated pleasing craftsmanship and stretched his creativity to explore multiple ways of representing the sun. Fabulous work, Max.

Years 3-6 Artists of the Week
Artist of the week is brought to you by Year 6. The boys are ‘warming up’ to start their ‘Wyvernbald’ portraits. They made graffiti and cartoon book covers for their VAPDs. It was exciting to see their creativity within these pieces, and how far they have come over the past few years. I look forward to see what they achieve when painting their portraits.

Children on the Meaning of Love
A group of professional people posed this question to a group of 4 to 8 year-olds, “What does love mean?”
The answers they got were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined. See what you think:
“When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn’t bend over and paint her toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That’s love.” (Rebecca- age 8)
“When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You just know that your name is safe in their mouth.” (Billy – age 4)
“Love is what makes you smile when you’re tired.” (Terri – age 4)
“Love is what’s in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen.” (Bobby – age 7)
“If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate.” (Nikka – age 6)
“When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars come out of you.” (Karen – age 7)
And the final one — Author and lecturer Leo Buscaglia once talked about a contest he was asked to judge. The purpose of the contest was to find the most caring child. The winner was a four year old child whose next door neighbour was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife. Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman’s yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there.
When his Mother asked what he had said to the neighbour, the little boy said, “Nothing, I just helped him cry”.

A Message from Mr Holden
It seems hard to believe we are entering the second half of Term 1. It is good to report that the start of the 2016 academic year has been very positive with Wyvern students settling to their very full agendas with focus and determination. I am aware that this week has also been a very busy one for parents as well, with various learning showcases and parent teacher interviews. I thank you for your support and attendance at these events. A reminder that tomorrow at 8:30am, the Wyvern Deputies will be available to answer any questions parents may have about their areas of responsibility. Tomorrow, Ms Gray and Mr Baker will focus particularly on the transition boys have made into Year 3 and Year 5, although parents from all year groups are welcome to attend. Ms Gray will be in the library and Mr Baker will be in the flexible learning area on level 1.
CAR PARK
Thank you for observing our key safety rules when using the drive through facility which has led to improved efficiency in this area. I do remind parents that it is important not to arrive at the car park too early as this causes major congestion on Harrow Road. The earliest times you should arrive at the car park are:
- 3:05pm – K-2
- 3:20pm – Years 3-6
A further reminder that we are keen to maintain good relationships with our neighbours. As such I request that parents are mindful of the local residents of Stanmore especially those in the surrounding streets of Wyvern House. In particular please do not park across driveways. We have recently had a number of complaints from residents about this issue.
We continue to work closely with Marrickville Council on all traffic issues around the campus.
Ian Holden
Head of Wyvern House
