Envoy – New Sign in System at Wyvern

Dear Parents,

As many of you are aware, we have a new sign-in system at Wyvern named Envoy. When visiting Wyvern you must now use the electronic sign-in system at the front office window before moving on to the designated area you wish to visit. The system will take your photograph and provide you with a label to wear whilst on the premises. When exiting the building you must sign out to ensure we have an accurate record of who is on the premises.

Envoy enables us to provide a much safer environment for staff, students and parents. In the event of a fire alarm or evacuation, it would provide a photograph of any visitors thought to be in the building. It also allows us to have a more secure facility ensuring that we are able to keep track of visitors.

Additionally it improves communication within the school as it makes the signing in process much more autonomous, sending notifications to staff members when their visitor has arrived.

Your patience and consideration in following this procedure ensures the safety of the students, staff and parents.

Kind regards

Year 4 Extension English Jewish Museum Trip

On the 7th April 2016 Mr Baker’s Year 4 English group went to visit the Jewish Museum which was a very special experience. We got to meet a Holocaust survivor called Olga Horak. We also met Jackie French and we did a question and answer session with her. After this we examined an Anne Frank timeline that showed us her life and changes that happened after World War 2 started.

The meeting with Olga was quite amazing. The experience of meeting someone who had survived such tragic and horrible years in a Concentration Camp made me think carefully about how fortunate I am. It was really sad to hear her talk about the cruel things that happened to her and her family. I also thought she was very brave to be able to speak to us about it without crying.

After we listened to Olga we met Jackie French. We listened to her talk about her book ‘Hitler’s Daughter’. She told us about the book’s character ‘Heidi’ and that she was not, in fact, Hitler’s real daughter, she was one of his orphan children that he looked after. Jackie also spoke to us about how many things in the book were events that happened in real life. For example, the bus driver, ‘Mrs Latter’ was based upon one of her good friends. They both had very strong opinions. When another character ‘Mark’ asked ‘Do Cows Sneeze?’ Jackie told us that her son had asked the same question.

After this we moved on to a life timeline of Anne Frank. It was really interesting to see a model of the house that Anne Frank hid in. I never knew that she and her family hid in a secret room behind a bookshelf. I also learnt that Anne had a sister. Her name was Margot. During the exhibition I had wondered why Anne Frank was so much more famous than all the other Jewish people during World War 2. I found out that this was because she wrote such a detailed diary – amazing for someone who was only 13 years old. I also thought it was a good contrast that the Anne Frank timeline also showed what was happening in the rest of the world during the days that Anne spent with her family hiding inside the house.

I learnt so much visiting the Jewish Museum. It was a wonderful experience and was a lot of information to listen to. I was very tired by the end of the day, exhausted from thinking and learning about so many things. I would recommend that it would be great if there could be more time to discuss everything we learned.

Year 6 Camp to Point Wolstoncroft

Dear Parents,

At the end of Term 1, Wyvern’s Year 6 boys and staff embarked on their annual Outdoor Education Camp travelling to Point Wolstoncroft which is situated at Gwandalan on the shore of Lake Macquarie. Below are photos taken of boys and staff enjoying their time there.

Theatresports

On Friday 1st April, 20 boys from Years 5 and 6 performed in the Term 1 Theatresports competition. Families came to support their son as they took to the stage to compete for the Championship title. The boys used their improvisation, storytelling, cooperation and teamwork skills to perform different games in their teams. At the end, the competition was very close with only 1 POINT separating first and second place. All boys played exceptionally well and should be very proud of their efforts. A big congratulations to Reuben Palmer, Ryan Palmer, Andre Gregory, and Kaiden Hassen who took out 1st place and are now the current Wyvern Theatresports Champions!

Faith Matters

Have you ever considered walking on water?

You are probably aware of the incident in the Bible where the disciples are in a storm and Jesus comes to them walking on the water. Peter gets out of the boat and starts to walk towards Jesus. However, it isn’t long before he starts to sink.

Peter discovered: just because you sink doesn’t mean you’re sunk. Here are two reasons why. First, failing doesn’t make you a failure, quitting does. Failure is just a part of learning. Sir Edmund Hillary made several attempts to scale Mount Everest before succeeding. After one such attempt he stood in front of a photograph of the mountain and shook his fist as he told his audience: ‘Mount Everest, you will not beat me again. You have grown all you are going to, but I’m still growing!’ He learned something from every unsuccessful attempt until one day he succeeded. Winston Churchill said, ‘I’ve never failed at anything in my life. I was simply given another opportunity to get it right.’ That’s the winning spirit!

Secondly, the real failures were the ones who stayed in the boat. They failed quietly and privately; their failure went unnoticed and uncriticised. Although Peter crashed and burned publicly, he experienced the euphoria of walking on the water. He alone knew how it felt to be empowered by God to do what he could never have done by himself. Once you’ve walked on water you are never the same. Peter would take this moment to his grave! Failure doesn’t come from sinking – it comes from letting your fears stop you.

Artists of the Week

K – 2 Artist of the Week

Term 1 Week 11 – Ryan Low KB

Ryan created a beautiful painting of Monet’s garden using his fingertips. He used the primary colours to mix the secondary colours and experimented with adding white as a tint which created some beautiful shades of colours in his work. A lovely mini masterpiece, Ryan.

Term 2 Week 2 – Nicholas Veloz 1P

Inspired by the work of Georgia O’Keeffe, Nicholas put his heart into creating a stunning painting of a flower for Mother’s Day. He creatively experimented with line, colour and brushstrokes in his work and added a magic sprinkling of salt to create a special effect. A vibrant and beautiful artwork, Nicholas.

K-2 Visual Arts Teacher

3 – 6 Artists of the Week

Year 5 completed ‘The 2 Newington Boys’ artworks last term. Congratulations to all boys, as it was such a big project with many facets. This work was based on Frida Khalo’s – ‘The 2 Fridas’, portraying different parts of her on her life’s journey. Both her hearts are connected by a vein, and makes reference to the bus crash and long convalescence.

Artist of the Week for Year 5 goes to:

  • Kaiden Hassen
  • Charlie Foster
  • George Houvardis

Also more frog pictures, inspired by John Olsen from Year 3.

  • Yanni Krallis
  • Benjamin Nichol

Well done .

A correction for the Art Cars from last term. This artwork was by Je Min McFadden. Congratulations to Je Min.

A Message from Mr Holden

Welcome back to Term 2. We have an exciting term of learning ahead of us with a number of major events for the boys to look forward to including ‘Book Week’ in Week 4 and our Shakespeare Festival in Week 9. Later in the term we will enjoy a music showcase that will involve every student in Years 3-6. The date for this is 2 June at 6.00pm.

Next week, students from Years 3 and 5 will participate in the National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). School attendance during this week is especially important. Our approach to NAPLAN is to ensure boys are calm, relaxed and stress free when they take these tests. We follow strict guidelines in our preparation and do not ‘teach to the tests’. Our past experience shows us that boys will do their very best in these conditions.

Finally, last week we held a special ANZAC chapel service in which our students demonstrated deep respect for the sacrifice made by our servicemen and servicewomen in WWI and other conflicts. The 6 cohort also participated in the ANZAC Day commemorations at the Senior Campus.
