SRC – Busking Festival

On the last day of Term 3 we witnessed the huge success of the Busking Festival. There were card tricks, singing, dancing, ensembles and many more. All of these amazing acts contributed to a great cause as we happened to raise $339 for The Cancer CounciI where the money will be put towards fighting cancer and making sure the less fortunate people get the proper cancer treatment. We would love to give a big thank you to all the boys who donated, to all the boys who busked and finally to Mrs Stewart for making all this happen.

Year 5 Build a Bridge Incursion

Year 5 started the term with an exciting incursion, competing the build a bridge challenge. Boys immersed themselves in the world of glue guns and paddle pop sticks and used their BLP imitation and imagining muscles to imitate and improve the warren and howe truss bridge designs. This fantastic immersion activity kicks off an exciting Science term where the boys study light, and consider the how design implications in our current urban environments assist those with eyesight difficulties.

Year 5 Learning Showcase – STEM and Museum of Change

On Thursday 15th September, Year 5 conducted their annual Term 3 Learning Showcase. This year, we focused on two aspects: STEM in Primary Schools and the Museum of Change. Boys and their parents were involved in 6 different STEM activities, including sherbet making, M&M and water observations, a build a bridge challenge, robotics, and a mathematics estimation and volume challenge. In addition, boys shared the culmination of their learning of Term 3, exhibited as the ‘Museum of Change’. Through History, Geography, Science and English, boys conducted learning activities and inquiry based research to answer the question: ‘How do catalytic events change our lives?’. Boys researched, investigated, analysed and presented their learning. Congratulations to all boys for their hard work and fantastic learning.

Year 5 House Debating

On the 22nd and 23rd of September, Year 5 faced off in a fierce round of house debating. In the best Year 5 debates in Wyvern history, the members of Coates, Williams, Lucas and Howe battled it out for the overall prize. Congratulations to all boys for their fantastic collaboration, rebuttals and arguments. We encourage you all to try out for the debating team in 2017.

Faith Matters

LEARNING TO BE CONTENT

Nearly half the world’s population live on $2.50 per day or less. The World Bank classifies them as living in poverty. At the same time some of these people live contented lives.  Our society is largely one of excess upon excess. In a magazine article Jane Hammerslough tells how her family moved into a sparsely furnished rental house while their home was being renovated. Instead of missing what they’d left behind, surprisingly, they were liberated! Upon returning home they were overwhelmed by the utter excess of stuff, and gave much of it away. She concludes ‘When enough’s always just a little more … you don’t have room for the truly great things in life’. The message isn’t new; Solomon said ‘The abundance of a rich man permits him no sleep’.

But freedom from anxiety is more than just uncluttered closets. It’s a firm conviction that what you do have is a gift from God, and that it’s meant to be shared with others. Contentment simply frees you to enjoy what He’s provided. So with that in mind keep the following principles before you: buy things for their usefulness, not their status. Beware of anything that produces an addiction in you. Make a habit of giving things away. Learn to enjoy things without having to own them, or be owned by them.

Artist of the Week

K – 2 Artists of the Week – Term 3 Week 10

Year 2 are working through a unit on Still Life and are exploring some basic printmaking techniques. The boys ‘sketch-etched’ their pineapple drawings into a scratch foam plate and then worked through the block printing process to create print. Stunning pineapples, boys!

Well done to Zachary Messis 2W and Jameson Kang 2W

A Message from Mr Holden

Welcome back to what promises to be a very full and active Term 4. Please refer to the latest Term 4 Parent Calendar (available via Wyvern Spaces) for all details.

2017 CLASS ALLOCATION
The process for allocating students to their 2017 classes is well underway. It is my intention to inform you of your son’s new 2017 class before the end of this term. Boys will have the opportunity to meet their new teacher on “One-Up Morning” on 1st December. Please note that the deadline for parent input into the process has now passed and unfortunately, as such, I cannot consider any further requests.

NO SPORT ON MONDAY
Due to the swimming program in Term 4 there will only be sports training for Year 3 –Year 6 on Wednesday afternoons.  Boys in Year 3-6 may wear their PE uniform to school on this day. Note, there is no Monday sports training this term.

END OF THE DAY
The end of the school day is a very busy time, and for safety and security reasons we do request for parents not to enter the school building (unless they have a specific appointment) but rather wait for their sons in the designated area (Playground A). Also, parents should not access the building via foot, through the car park entry. Thank you for your co-operation with this matter.

Ian Holden
Head of Wyvern House
